    Dozens of historic venues across Shropshire are throwing open their doors to the public this weekend as they take part in the annual Heritage Open Days.

    We thought we'd pick out five of the more unusual sites taking part:

    • - a 47.5m (156ft) high column and statue with spiral stairs leading up to a platform with views over the county
    • - a collection of monorail and other unique railway vehicles in Oswestry
    • - which is offering bell ringing demonstrations and a tour of its belfry and roof

    • - a chance to go up the tower which is normally shut to the public

    RAF Shawbury is celebrating its 100th anniversary on the site.

    It has grown to become the home of the defence helicopter flying school and also train air traffic controllers.

    Last night, more than 70 guests turned out for a reception at the base and were treated to a parachute display, helicopter fly-pasts and a performance by the Military Wives Choir.

    Telford Tigers have a cup match against an old foe this weekend - the Basingstoke Bison.

    The two sides have clashed a number of times in recent seasons, while both were playing in the English Premier League.

    Telford came out on top in their last encounter - the play-off semi final at Coventry.

    Face off is at 18:00 on Sunday at the Telford Ice Rink.

    AFC Telford United have signed former Stourbridge, Kidderminster and Worcester City striker Jordan Murphy.

    He's been without a club since leaving Stourbridge earlier this season.

    The club says he trained with them today, ahead of their fixture against Harrogate Town tomorrow.

    A charity that had its donation of £2,500 for Ludlow hospital refused by the NHS has found another good cause for the money.

    The Ludlow Hospital League of Friends hasn't yet announced what the good cause is, but said it is local, "exceptionally worthwhile" and "health-related".

    The Shropshire Community Health Trust said it turned down the donation because it was raised by men dressed as female nurses - and it felt that was "demeaning" and "insulting to the profession".

  14. Could rehabilitation stop reoffending?published at 16:57 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    "Deferred prosecution" is being called for by an MP who has led a review into the prison service in England and Wales.

    MP David Lammy's finds the system is biased and discriminates in treatment of people from ethnic minority backgrounds.

    The Labour MP has made 35 recommendations, following a trial in the West Midlands where low-level offenders were allowed to "defer" prosecution and opt for a rehabilitation programme before entering a plea.

    Mr Lammy says the trial "produced impressive results and should be rolled out across the country".

    Operation Turning Point, was trialled from 2011 for four years, to those facing prosecution who had no more than one conviction.

    The government says it will "look carefully" at the recommendations.

    Resurfacing work on Castlefields Way in Telford is complete and the road has reopened.

    It was closed on 14 August and this was part of a wider road-repair programme, which has been taking place across the borough over the summer.

  16. Goodall suffered previous blackoutspublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    Wolverhampton Crown Court heard Goodall had previously been told by GPs not to drive because of blackouts. As a result, the prosecution said he should never have been behind the wheel on 15 June.

    The judge said it was likely the 77-year-old suffered another blackout due to abuse of alcohol.

  17. Fatal crash driver 'drank wine in lay-by' before schoolgirl deathpublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    The prosecution told Wolverhampton Crown Court that five bottles of wine were retrieved from Goodall's car, but a sixth (all bought at a supermarket soon before the crash) was never found.

    The defendant drank a quantity of wine in a lay-by on the A5, the court was told, and he was later found to be one and a half times over the drink drive limit.

  18. Driver who caused death of schoolgirl was over drink-drive limitpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    The driver who knocked down and killed 11-year-old Olivia Reeves in Shrewsbury earlier this year was over the legal drink-drive limit, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard earlier.

    Roger Goodall had previously pleaded guilty to a charge of drink driving in connection with the incident and today pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

    Another charge, of failing to notify DVLA of a medical condition had been withdrawn.

  19. Dog walker robbed by man with knifepublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    A woman in her 50s has been robbed by a man with a knife, while she was out walking her dog in Oswestry.

    Police say it happened at 14:00 yesterday between Ardmillan Lane and Shelf Bank.

    The woman was unhurt, but had her mobile phone stolen.

    A Shrewsbury pensioner who knocked down an 11-year-old school girl in June has been jailed for four-and-a-half-years after he admitted causing her death by dangerous driving.

    Roger Goodall from The Mount has also been banned from driving for five years.
