A buzzard which was found dead on moorland in North Yorkshire earlier this year may have been deliberately poisoned, police say.

The bird, a protected species, was found by a member of the public on 20 March and reported to the RSPB before being removed.

The buzzard (similar to the one pictured above) later underwent a post-mortem examination which revealed the presence of Chloralose, a highly toxic chemical, in the bird's body.

Given the buzzard was in good bodily condition and had no injuries, this chemical is now believed to be the cause of death, according to North Yorkshire Police.

Insp Matt Hagen said: "Chloralose was commonly used as a rodenticide to kill mice but is only currently permitted for use indoors at a low dose.

"As such, it is highly unlikely this buzzard could have come into contact with the poison accidentally and suggests it may have been deliberately poisoned.

“Unfortunately, this is the latest in a number of similar cases where birds of prey have been subjected to cruel and illegal persecution here in North Yorkshire," he added.

Anyone with information about the death of the bird is being asked to contact North Yorkshire Police.

A district of Sheffield still has the highest number of deaths in England involving coronavirus, figures show.

Crabtree and Fir Vale has seen a total of 67 deaths in the four months from March to June.

Last month, the suburb had the highest number of deaths with 66, meaning one person died with the virus in June, .

We reported in June that the area has a number of care homes in it, including a group which is currently being investigated by the health and safety executive after whistle-blowers claimed they were told not to wear face masks.

Bishop Auckland Central and West in County Durham had the next highest amount of deaths with 38, according to the figures.

The figures from the Office for National Statistics are based on all deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate and which had been registered by 11 July.

A falcon was pictured with a disposable mask in its talons, prompting a call for people to get rid of their masks responsibly.

Steve Shipley, from Driffield, took the photos of the falcon on the coast in Yorkshire.

The juvenile bird was spotted picking at mask, which it was holding in its talons.

Steve said: "It's quite a sad sight really, to see the falcon with the mask. They're there to protect us and it's not protecting the bird. It can cause a lot of damage to them.

"It's a matter of people being a bit more responsible and disposing of the masks properly. The masks are there to protect us, and the least we can do is not put anything else in danger."
