Two guinea pigs have been found dumped in a cage in a remote area without food or water.

The RSPCA said they were "lucky to survive their ordeal" after the animal charity rescued them when a runner spotted them in Hurcott Pool, off Hurcott Road in Bromsgrove.

One of the female guinea pigs had a burst abscess.

Both are now in the care of the RSPCA at Gonsal Farm Animal Centre in Shropshire and are recovering well.

The RSPCA is now investigating and want to find who is responsible for dumping the pets on 6 March.

She said: "These poor guinea pigs were lucky to be found - it was 20:30 and had they not been discovered I am not sure they would have survived the night in the cold."

"I am hoping someone may recognise the pets and know who had them or someone will have seen something suspicious in the area where they were found."
