A safer, more habitable planet

We contribute to a safer and more habitable planet by providing an information lifeline in humanitarian emergencies, by supporting information flows that help people adapt to climate change, live sustainable lifestyles and protect nature, and by peace-building and building tolerance during conflict and division.

We provide lifelines - with media content that is produced for, rather than about, people who are coping with crisis, including in adapting to climate change. Our work supports and amplifies efforts to adapt and cope, cost-effectively at speed and scale. In some contexts, we also support people's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and challenge unsustainable behaviours.

We help mitigate the risks that vulnerable people face from extreme weather and other natural hazards - including earthquakes, fires, floods and landslides. Through media, we support people to prepare ahead to manage risk, and to respond to shocks.

We help mitigate and prevent conflict, and build peace in fragile and conflict- affected settings. Our work supports people to appreciate different viewpoints, increases tolerance of difference, improves social cohesion, reduces the acceptance of violence and helps societies to negotiate inclusive political settlements. We use role modelling to encourage non-violent conflict resolution and tolerance. And we create storylines and characters that resonate with audiences’ own experiences, illustrating the role of men, women, young people, elders – and formal and informal institutions – in preventing, containing and resolving conflict.

  • Climate and resilience

Building resilience and tackling climate change requires action at all levels of society. Media has the power to explore effective ways to adapt, connect those affected with decision-makers and encourage more sustainable lifestyles. We support millions living in poverty and uncertainty to boost their resilience and economic security.
  • Humanitarian response

Information is critical in the aftermath of emergencies - it is as important as food, water and shelter. Through our projects and programmes, and our specialised humanitarian training courses, we support people to survive, cope and rebuild their lives after disasters strike.
  • Protecting lives and building peace

We work with media partners through conflict and crisis and beyond to support conflict prevention, mitigation and peacebuilding in conflict- affected settings. In Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Ukraine, where unexploded ordnance poses a deadly threat most frequently to children, we raise awareness of the dangers through media to save lives.

How we work

We are experts in providing life-saving information and emotional support in humanitarian emergencies. Our content amplifies the voices of crisis-affected people, enabling them to express their needs and preferences so that aid providers can better support them. We also strengthen aid efforts by enabling aid providers to reach people who cannot be accessed by traditional services, or when physical access is obstructed.

We work with media partners through conflict and crisis and beyond, ensuring they are meeting the needs of their audiences.
