Lime Street - The Scala

Scala
The drawing is from the programme of The Scala, showing the original frontage.
The Scala was situated next door to the Picture House on Lime Street.

This has the distinction of being the first in Liverpool to be advertised as a super cinema, because of the artistic design and luxurious interior.

The first licensee and general manager of the then named Lime Street Picture House was Vivian van Damm, a name later associated with the famous Windmill Theatre in London ("we never close").
He introduced the "tub" seat to Liverpudlians, at 2/-, unheard of in l916!

In the 20s, it boasted Jules Gaillard, violin virtuoso and his orchestra. After many years of good attendance, the Scala became Merseyside鈥檚 Continental Cinema in l960, showing foreign "X" certificate films until l962, when it continued as an adult entertainment venue.

The Scala closed in August l982.
