The Birth of Barry – When Coal was King |

© Park IT Consultancy |
The Barry Railway lasted less than 40 years but was second only to Taff Vale, established fifty years earlier, in size and importance. The total cost of the original project was £2 million, but the investment paid off. It was competitive, successful and prosperous, paying annual dividends of 9.5 and 10 per cent.
The enterprise was a vindication of the resolve of the Rhondda coal owners and demonstrated their independence from the dock and railway companies that had, until then, exerted a monopolistic influence on the Cardiff coal trade. Their contribution to the history of South Wales was not limited to a successful railway and docks.
They created the town of Barry and the resort of Barry Island, the latter providing seaside holidays for generations of families from South Wales and beyond.
