.Q.In which ways did you enjoy your job?
.A.I enjoyed turning a plain, open field into Newcastle Airport.
.Q.How much was your house, where was it and what were the living conditions like when you were 21? 3.A.Our house was and still is a bungalow in Hetton-Le-Hole, it cost £2,500 but wasn't everything we wanted so I built more rooms.
.Q.What was your working wage when you were 21 and what did you think of it? 4.A.I got paid £12 per week which was about 48-50 hours but because I thought the wage was so bad, I left that company and began to work for another building company called Wimpy.
.Q.What did you enjoy doing when you were 21 and how often did you do it? 5.A.I enjoyed playing football and cricket which I did 2-3 times a week. I also enjoyed joining the army after.
.Q.What was your favourite, film, movie-star, food, book or anything else when you were 21? 6.A.My favourite film was Three Coins in a Fountain. My favourite movie-stars were Bert Lancaster, Gregory Peck and Kirk Douglas. My favourite food was leek pudding. My favourite books were sports books and manuals and I also liked it when I was in the army.
.Q.What kind of public transport did you use when you were 21 and how fast was it? 7.A.Sometimes I used a train and it would take six hours to get from Durham to King's Cross. When I was in the army we went to Malaya and we used rickshaws where somebody pulled you along by hand and we used trishaws where somebody pedalled a bike and pulled you along. They were both very slow.
.Q.Can you tell me a story about when you were at work or any other time when you were 21? 8.A.We were at work at Whitburn Shooting Range where the army practiced shooting and we had to renovate the wood buildings into brick buildings and there was three feet of snow on the ground. The Shooting Ranges are still there now are still there now. We also built houses opposite Whitburn cricket field including those for the butcher, the baker and a news reporter.
.Q.Did you ever have to go to hospital when you were 21, if so, what was it like? 9.A.Between Christmas and New Year I fell forty feet from the scaffolding but I was alright. My cousin however didn't fall as far as me but hurt his back. The nurses in the hospital were very strict especially the Matron who looked after me.
.Q.What was your ambition when you were 21 and have you achieved it? 10.A.I always wanted to build my own house but I only half achieved it because I renovated our pre-war house but didn't actually build it. I built houses for other people but unfortunately not for myself.
