When I was 21 in 1940 I worked for my father who owned his own shop and workroom above the store. I worked in the store which was a general dealers store and a ships chandler. The store was located in South Shields, Tyne & Wear. I worked from early in the morning till late at night, 7 days a week. I was paid 2 shillings per week until I was 21 and then a rise to 5 shillings on condition I bought my own clothes! We sold large quantities of food to be stored on ships for long voyages; we sold live animals, bedding and clothing which were used by the seaman. We attracted alot of foreign visitors to the store.
