Your Story: My Grandad's story |
|
When Ed was 21 years of age he had just finished a 5 year apprentiship in panel beating, with his friend Frank Dembry.
They opened a business which was called T&D Auto-Bodies which was in Sunderland. They often worked twelve to twenty hours a day in order to build up the business.
In 1966, the first year the business went very well. Ed & Frank each took £200 to £300 wages each per week. This was in addition to ploughing investment back into the business. They had to pay rent for the premises and buy equipment including paint. The normal average wage in thoses days was only about £3 for women and £6 for men.
Around about the same time Ed started learning to drive. But first he took swimming lessons. When he was a fully qualified driver he was one of the founders of the North East branch of the British sub-aqua club. Prince Charles is still the president of the club. He also bought the latest fashion. With his wage (that he worked very hard for) Ed took three holidays a year. He went to beautiful places.
Weekends were for diving, either St.Abbs or Beadwell sealhouse. He also went on long weekends to Cornwell. Ed also had a motor bike.
It sounds like my Grandad worked hard and had a good life.
