The business of fun

“Our business is fun” is a claim made by the several hundred families who travel to attend the numerous fairs held across the width and breadth of Great Britain. But what is involved in the so-called business of fun and why have some families felt it their calling to provide it for over 150 years? Devon’s famous Anderton and Rowland firm of travelling showmen, provides a fascinating insight into the work of travelling fairs. As their story demonstrates, the exotic livestock, the flamboyant showmen and impressive machinery is in danger of overshadowing the real-life difficulties faced by those living a nomadic life.
