For more than 120 years artists from many parts of the world have been drawn to the small seaside town of St Ives, at the far west of Cornwall, on account of its extraordinary light. A significant number of whom have chosen to make it their home. The origins of this migration, which first occurred in the latter part of the 19th Century, throughout Europe and the United States, was in response to changes in the way artists were beginning to work: painting and drawing out of doors (‘plein-air’) rather than in their studio, and the desire to form artists’ colonies.
