King of the Beggars |

Bampfylde Moore Carew, better known as “King of the Beggars”, was a larger than life character, with a larger than life name. Born into a high-standing Devonian family in the late-17th Century, he ran away from school, renouncing his respectable origins to join a group of “gipsies”. His colourful exploits made fascinating reading, and the published accounts of his life ran into many editions.
Bampfylde's was a real-life story in the literary tradition of the loveable “rogue”. With ingenious disguises and confidence tricks, he turned the tables on the rich and powerful, and this, perhaps, explains his hold on the public’s imagination: Bampfylde provided an example of defiant independence and freedom in a time of increasing social conformity.
