Myths and Legends
Your Story: The Arms of Dunstable and The Legend of Dunne The Robber

The ring eventually found its way to Wilfred and he and Alicia prepared for their wedding. At this late stage in the story we learn about the founding of Dunstable. To prevent any further attacks on travellers Henry I had ordered the building of a ‘Traders’ Mart’… ‘a place for mercers and buyers of wool … a mart [market] where country folk shall bring their produce and barter if for money’.

This last version of the legend, written by the editor of the Dunstable Borough Gazette, was published in full in 1899. Then in 1906, another Dunstable historian, Worthington Smith, produced a detailed ‘portrait’ and labelled it – ‘DUNA the Anglo Saxon owner of the present Site of DUNSTABLE, with the Pillar or STAPOL, erected as a mark of ownership’.

This also was printed in the Borough Gazette and now, in the 21st century, John Buckledee, the present editor, has researched the background to all three books, written prefaces, and prepared them for publication by local publisher/bookshop owner Paul Bowes of the Book Castle in Dunstable.
