In 1800, Bradford was a small rural town of 16,000 people with a solitary steam powered mill. Wool was mostly spun in local cottages and farms. However, during the days of the Industrial Revolution, it became the fastest growing city in Britain. Although most people came from the surrounding countryside others were from further afield. The first large group to arrive from overseas were the Irish, seeking work in the textile mills and associated factories. Ever since then Bradford, textiles and immigration have been closely linked.
