As more men came to work in the textile mills of Bradford they would share cheap housing near their places of work. Cafes sprung up to provide them with food, such as the Sweet Centre on Lumb Lane. Although living conditions were crowded and sub-standard, the climate cold, and the work unpleasant with long hours, the process of chain migration developed a dynamic of its own throughout the 1950s.
