Opium, Soap and Big Plans for Lewis. |
|
As you approach the harbour of Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, you cannot help but notice how the skyline of the town is dominated by the magnificent brick towers of Lews Castle. This great edifice, easily the most impressive on the island raises many questions however. Obviously of 19th Century design, how did such a grandiose building come to sit here? And, perhaps more bizarrely, why, today, does it lie empty and abandoned?
Lews Castle provides the link between two of the most controversial owners of the island, James Matheson and Lord Leverhulme. Both men felt that through their philanthropy they could transform the islanders into perfect modern citizens. But both men failed to realise that land was the main concern of the inhabitants, and as a result they never realised the full potential of the islands.
