Life at the Mill:
Owen quickly began to put his ideas into practice at New Lanark, and gradually they began to win over the workforce, especially when he continued to pay his workers for four months during an American cotton embargo. His reforms centred around four aspects of life in the village. The first of these was obviously in the workplace.
Mill
In the mill, Owen immediately stopped the employment of children under 10 - a large section of the workforce he had inherited - and reduced the working day of older children to ten hours. He also introduced benefits such as sick pay, which was unheard of at the time.
Also, as an incentive to his workers, Owen introduced a system of "silent monitors", which displayed a coloured marker beside a person's workstation, the colour varying depending on the worker's behaviour. This system can be viewed as a primitive form of the appraisal system now used in companies across the globe
Shop
All private shops were closed and the company store opened by David Dale was improved, with profits used to open a free village school. The sale of drink from the store was highly regulated, thereby vastly reducing the levels of drunkenness, and the shop only sold quality produce, at little more than cost price. This model of retailing formed the basis of the later Co-operative movement.
