Leicester's modern city
Back in 1963 Leicester was a truly modern city. It boasted the first automatic multi-storey car park in Europe, the first Tesco supermarket outside London, a new-fangled drive-in post office and a drive-in bank. Ray Gosling compared the multi-storey car park to a "frontier post with no guards, all automatic", but now abhors its "horrible concrete", brutalistic architecture.
