My grandfather's grave

Diane from Bromsgrove talks about the moving message on her grandfather's gravestone in France. She also recounts how the news that he'd been killed in World War One was broken to the family.

My grandfather, Arthur Lenthall, died in the military hospital at St Omer on May 19 1918.

My dad, then aged seven, remembered the telegram boy coming a month earlier to say Arthur was injured but in hospital.

The telegram boy returned one month later giving the telegram to my dad - he put this behind the clock for his mum.

It contained the terrible news that the hospital had been bombed.

I visited the grave for the first time ten years ago - a beautiful small cemetery, incredibly moving.

There I found my grandfather's grave, alongside many nurses and medical personnel, all killed on the same day.

Most moving of all however were the words on the gravestone, which read: "Your loving wife Edie and the children who will never forget you."

Although he was not forgotten, I was听the first family member to have ever visited his grave.

If you have an interesting story about World War 1, involving a member of your family, we'd love to hear it.
