Men mourning their fallen comrade from Langemarck German Cemetery.

Langemarck German Cemetery.

The scale of the sacrifice

Emma, from the Chase High School in Malvern, reflects on the scale of the losses in WW1, after a visit to a German cemetery, containing more than 44,000 graves.

Throughout our week in Belgium we visited many cemeteries and memorials - it was scary seeing all of the names and graves, knowing that every one was someone's son, brother, Dad, husband or friend.

On the last day we went to Langemarck German Cemetery - this was the only Germany cemetery in Ypres, and 44,292 people were buried or cremated here.

We had already been to lots of cemeteries, and the amount of people that died was really shocking.

During the week we visited lots of British and French cemeteries - it was horrifying realising the amount of British men who had lost their lives.

Then visiting Langemarck I realised that the Germans also lost men thousands of men.

The men had all once lived, and each one of them had a story - they weren't the enemy, they were men fighting for their country.

There was not anyone who wasn't affected by the war - so many countries lost a generation of men.

This cemetery was very different to the other cemeteries, we had visited - it was a very peaceful and quiet cemetery and also looked different.

The stones were black, and lay flat on the ground, and eight soldiers were buried on each plot, due to the limit of space.

At the back of the cemetery was a sculpture of four figures with their helmets off, looking over their fallen comrades.

A lot of the men buried here died in the first battle of Ypres in 1914 - a lot of the men were students, only a few years older than myself.

Their lives were cut so short, and all of them left a loved one behind.

If you have an interesting story about World War 1, involving a member of your family, we'd love to hear it.
