Bestival 2008Indy Almroth-Wright & Stephen Stafford The crazy world of Bestival brought some of the best acts and DJs on the planet plus local bands together in the gloriously muddy, leafy surroundings of the Island's Robin Hill Country Park. Help playing audio/video Bestival 2008 was literally a filthy weekend - and will be remembered for its mud madness, mermaids and meteoric bill of top music. A spot of mud wrestling A stellar line up brought together legends including Gary Numan and the Human League, with top acts Pendulum, show-closers Underworld and surprise guests Grace Jones and The Specials. By all accounts much talked about Saturday night headliner Amy Winehouse put in a weak performance, arriving on stage almost an hour late and playing a short set. The 24 hour mud field AquaticsDespite the absence of a blazing Indian summer, and the arrival of thousands of gallons of flowing brown goo, around 30,000 Bestival-goers descended on the Isle of Wight for another rip-roaring three days at the fifth Bestival. The underwater fancy dress theme fitted perfectly with the essential wellies and waterproofs; with thousands of lobsters, prawns, jellyfish, Neptune's, mermaids (and 'mermen' for that matter!) all squelching along in the annual parade.ÌýÌý In the party spirit It was the first year of rain at Bestival and organiser Rob da Bank remained philosophical: "Everyone's in good spirits and got their wellies - we'll get through it." A 'mop up' of the site was quickly put in place - with workers laying down a plastic 'carpet' in front of the main stage and a path of bark chippings through the site. Unsigned bandsOnce again, a selection of unsigned/local bands and artists also got the chance to air their music at the three day festival. ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Introducing's special guest, Pirate Will Young The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Introducing… stage was back to showcase a variety of up-and-coming bands in the 24-hour field. The venue played host to an awe-inspiring selection of artists including Kissy Sell Out, local lads Six Nation State, Thomas Tantrum and special guest Will Young. Bestival was not just about the music, there was also a magical wonderland of weird and wonderful places to visit and things to see and do; from ballroom dancing to the inevitable mud-wrestling, moustache competitions and homemade tea and cakes. last updated: 11/09/2008 at 14:58 Have Your SayShare your Bestival mud memories....
