Rudbeckias are at their best in autumn. Their large, daisy-like flowers reflect the tints of the changing trees with their rich shades of gold, orange and mahogany red. There are many different varieties, single and double, tall and dwarf. All possess a prominent cone-like centre to the flower, earning the alternative common name of Black-eyed Susan, shared with thunbergia. In many warm sheltered beds, varieties such as 'Marmalade' survive to become successful herbaceous perennials with some winter protection. They grow well in a sunny site with well-drained soil.
