Sue delivers a short and slightly nervous pitch explaining how her unique photographs of lights can be displayed in a variety of ways. She hints at successful sales and says she's ready to build the business up.
Julie wants to know whether Sue is an artist first or a business-woman. Sue explains that her creative side is matched by her business drive and that she has successfully sold 11 pieces for up to £480.
The hefty price tags prompts Shaf to ask about the unit price for each print. He isn't attracted by the terrific mark-ups and is convinced that similar, cheaper pieces could be produced: "I could take a very, very similar picture if I had some lights and a camera."
Shaf is concerned that the artwork cannot be protected and that Sue is at risk of being undercut in the market. Sue argues that "You can't stop people copying but the original is always the best"
Julie digs deeper into the details of Sue's business and asks for her forecasts. Sue's explanation of how a turnover of £89,000 in the first year could be achieved is vague. Shaf is unimpressed and explains to Sue that she needs a solid grasp of her figures in order to attract an investment. He's dissatisfied by Sue's proposed return on investment of just 5% after the first three years and tells her she needs to view the business from an investor's perspective. Shaf declares himself out.
Julie likewise fails to see how she could make money from Sue's business: "I can't see this as an investment opportunity, I'm really sorry...". She too is out.
