After a brisk, yet solid pitch, Julie Meyer asks about sales. Giles reports that he has sold 250 in the first three months, at a retail price double that of his manufacturing cost.
Shaf Rasul asks how much advertising he spent to achieve these sales and Giles admits he spent £10,000. Giles also admits that the business has been running for over 2 and a half years and with 2,000 in his warehouse still unsold, an unforgiving Shaf points out that Giles has eight years of stock still to shift.
Giles is pressed on the current state of his balance sheet he admits it is negative and Shaf concludes that he is being invited to invest in an insolvent business. Giles grudgingly agrees.
Shaf points out that the goalposts are overpriced and need to sell at ££9.99 or £12.99 to be competitive. Giles admits he has made mistakes but Shaf concedes Qwikgoal is a good product. Despite savaging the business model, he then invites Giles to offer a higher equity stake.
Within minutes Giles offers Shaf 90% of his business, reasoning that 10% of worldwide sales would still leave him with a lucrative deal.
While Shaf considers his options, Julie questions Giles's particular skills. He suggests his passion for football would make him an evangelist for the product and while Julie commends his enthusiasm and commitment, she doesn't sense he has a viable business strategy and so declares herself out.
This leaves the ball back in Shaf's court but he is now reluctant to press forward with a deal - with an equity stake of 90% he feels he would be acting as an administrator or receiver for the business and is not prepared to do so . He declares himself out.
