Why I want Germany to win the World Cup
- 3 Jul 06, 09:52 AM
MUNICH - Ok, I know it鈥檚 hard to drum up much enthusiasm for the rest of the World Cup now England have packed their bags and gone home.
But there鈥檚 still a week to go and four teams left in it. We鈥檝e got to wait four years until the next World Cup, so we may as well enjoy every minute while it lasts. So come on, who will you be cheering on in this week鈥檚 semi-finals?
For me, there鈥檚 only one choice.
Four weeks ago I could never have imagined cheering on England鈥檚 arch footballing rivals Germany.
But a month in Munich has completely changed my opinion of the people, the country and the team.
Jurgen Klinsmann has got his young side playing an attacking style of football you wouldn鈥檛 normally associate with the Germans and they鈥檝e been the most entertaining side in the tournament.
Germany鈥檚 fans have also been fantastic. Thousands of people have taken to the streets after every match, waving flags, honking horns and turning every city into a sea of black, red and gold.
Don't get me wrong, I鈥檝e got nothing against France, Italy or Portugal. Well, maybe Portugal. But at the same time there鈥檚 nothing about them that makes me want to root for them.
Right, I鈥檓 off now to buy wristbands, face paint and a comedy hat.
Auf gehts Deutschland schiesst ein Tor! (Come on Germany score a goal!)
PS. For all those who emailed or posted here asking for details of the song used at the end of the England Portugal game on Match of The Day... It was Numb from the .

I will be backing Germany to win the Cup. I was hoping for an England v Germany final but sadly that was not to be... I think the Germans have put on a fantastic tournament and are themselves playing the most exciting football. They deserve to win it this year. Good luck.
PS I hope France hammer Portugal & Ronaldo gets sent off, he does not deserve to play in any more games.

Stuart.
Be relaxed. C Ronaldo has been having thigh pains and will probably miss france game. Almos as he had missed England game. Thats right, the innocent dutch gave him a leg braker and he got what he deserved. It almost gave England a righteous god sent victory right?
Figo is also "Righteously" out of the game as he was kicked in the face in the Mexico game and elbowed in the face against the dutch. I guess you guys are so blind to complain about rooneys expulsion that you are far too blind to see if anyone has to complain about man hunting in the game is Portugal, but then as we dont have amateur press that is not given such extraordinary conspiracy theories as it is given arround here.

Germany should win and if not they still mastered a great world cup. They have won the Tournament already, whatever is ahead of them.
I am amazed about their football too, let alone the people and the way they welcomed the English. Thanks Germany, you couldn't have done more for us.
I had some great laughs with them and I felt ashamed for the preconceptions I had about the country that is culturally closest to us. Next time I see a red top newsreporter I will roll up the paper and smack it over his or her head.
And by the way, maybe it's about time to consign Jeremy Clarkson to the 成人快手 Chronicles, for all his xenophobic and German-bashing remarks. The Germans have done their bit, maybe the 成人快手 follows suit.

All I can say to EnglandFan is - get a life and enjoy it in Germany. I've lived here for over 30 years and OK there was a bit of banter this morning so what, England lost on penalties - Again. Go out and enjoy the German games, the fans are fantastic and the country is really showing flag. I think is it Wunderbar and I really do hope they win, they have deserved it. I'm going to the Frankfurt arena tomorrow night to watch the Germany vs. Italy game on the big screen with 30.000 others, should be good fun and if the German loose they will be happy that they got to the semis. Why do the Brits always have to wine.

I have backed Germany from day one and placed a bet on them a week before the world cup began at 8/1 which I thought was fantastic odds considering the history of German football and the fact they are playing at home. I was also impressed by Klinsmann鈥檚 dedication to playing attractive attacking football and not relying on the old guard to see then through come on Deutschland

Germany or France for me.
After the French performance against Brazil on Saturday I have to say they deserve to go through to the final. However I have a dreadful feeling that the Portuguese who let's face it cannot compete with a France team on this form, might sneak it again in a penalty shoot-out.
I would like the Germans to beat the Italians but again, with so much at stake I fear another 0-0 with the Italians going through on pens.
Fingers crossed for some early goals and outright victories in the semis and final. A world cup winner who had to rely on more than one penalty shoot-out isn't in my book a real winner.

I think the Germans have captured the hearts of many as the tournament has progressed, and surely the image of the world cup has to be that of Kahn and Lehmann putting all their previous acrimony (and there was a lot) behind them before that penalty shootout. That image was enough to make most fans hearts melt!
I don't know whether Germany are going to win it, but they deserve to for their refreshing approach. The French are the favourites for me at the moment, they have paced the tournament perfectly!

Good on you Mr Atherton, as an (English born) Anglo-Greek Uni student studyig German and Linguistics, I too am lending my supports to the host nation. I myself am very attached to the Germans and want them to win, that said I would not put them above the two nations whose blood is in my veins (England and Greece).
All I can say is "Auf gehts Deutschland schiesst ein Tor und winnen sie das Weltmeisterschaft aber n盲chste Mal, h眉ten sie sich vor die Engl盲nder."
(Come on Germany, score a goal and win the World Cup, but next time, beware of the English)

I fully agree. I saw PT vs Angola in Cologne and the Germans put on a great show. The weirdest bit was seeing a house in the old town with a German and English flag flying side-by-side; I couldn't have imagined that before the tournament.
Also, I remember my favourite chant from Euro 2004 was a bunch of Germans seeing a Liverpool flag and singing, in English, "we fu@k you England we do, ..." - I congratulated some Germans on their inventiveness and had a really good time with them.

re:pilotasso's query that there may be some prejudice aginst some cultures. Could it be that we naturally detest teams that simulate, dive and behave outrageously in order to get players carded, and I'm not only talking about Rooney here. Italy's and Portugal's games have been riddled with such incidents which is why nobody here is backing them. It's about fair play, heard of that?

Hello England!!!
I am German and during the WorldCup and I have seen the match England-Ecuador in the stadium and I was talking to a lot of guys from England and I have to say that I haven't realized any of the prejudices that Germans have about the English (drinking to much, being aggressive...). NO, you have been wonderful football supporters and friends and I hope this will continue for a long long time. I hope the ones who came over felt the same way about prejudices towards the Germans. At the end of the day we all meet nice people everywhere and stupid old stories actually don't matter anymore, innit.
I was wishing to meet England in the final but - ??? - what is going wrong with all those penalties you miss? It's not funny anymore.
So, I hope you keep this WorldCup and Germany in good memory and we will party together during vacation and in two years in Austria and Switzerland!!!
Go on England!!!

Who'd have thought a Germany side would have been the shining example of good attacking football and showing the world how to play the game? They have gone out with the atitiude of 'we want to win', rather than the 'we don't want to lose' mentality of so many teams, England included. It has been a delight.
I really hope they do win. The tournament has been a fantastic success, and the players and country fully deserve a big celebration 'Julyfest'!

It looks like it'll be a Germany France final, and although I think Germany will win it, I hope that France will.
Zidane is one of the best players the tournament has seen this year and as he's retiring at the end of this World Cup, it would be great if he could end on a high note.
A team is more than one player and France have shown that to be true. Who would have thought after their poor start, that they'd send Spain and Brasil home?

Pilotasso,
Rooney was right to be sent off, but I feel the ref was going for yellow until that whiny child with the leg spasms wheedled at the official.
the wink at the end from that boy, and alleged aggressive behaviour intended to snap the already wound up rooney was just outright dirty play.
dont take our attitudes in vain again. I wont tolerate cheating (brandishing imaginary cards and diving are the worst) from you, or especially us.
and the sending off would never have happened if Wayne was given the foul from a few seconds before, but he didnt dive, so didnt get it. but whats done is done.

Spookily I have these exact same feelings. The German team have played the best football of the tournament, played fair and surprisingly seem to have rid themselves of the uglier elements of the game.
As far as Portugal are concerned, good luck to them, if they want to win by all costs, fair play, but I have a sneaking suspicion karma will come and get them.
A Thierry Henry swallow dive in the penalty area in the 89th minute anyone?

To be honest, I still cannot believe what I'm reading here. Thanks to all those English people in here who are going to support the German team from now on. Personally, I felt really sorry for the English team on saturday, even more so after they clearly played their best match in the tournament.
After several decades of rampant German-bashing in parts of the British media, it's really a positive novelty to hear a couple of different comments now. So thank you michael for saying from an English point of view "Germany is "the country culturally closest to us". That's exactly what I always thought - from a German point of view.
Anyhow: Let Jeremy Clarkson stay. Top Gear is my favourite on 成人快手 World.

Another reason I like the Germans...
Watched an episode of the TV show "Grand Designs" a while back, and this lovely little old couple about to retire was getting a house built.
They had the plot of land, and they had this special pre-fab flat pack deal brought over from Germany by a German construction crew. All glass and wood, and customized just for them. A beaut, in theory! These German lads had the house, up, wired and ready to decorate in a week! It was unbelievable! German organization.. you have to love it!
Of course the one sole problem they had with the entire build was that a crane they needed to unpack their trucks didn't turn up on time... It was being driven by the one English fellah working on the build! typical.. Fortunatly the Germans had that eventaulity covered, and STILL got the build done with a day to spare. Germans. Genius!

The wink of C Ronaldo if proven to be a provocation torwards Rooney would have cost him his stay in the portugals team.
Are you surprised by this statement?
Bi phill has excluded excelent players out of the team for less. In the dutch game had not Portugal been dragged into a silly nerves war some of the players would have been sent home.
The wink has been stated in Portuguese press as taken seriously out of context on the part of the British press, wich by the way, missed the pats on the back on the dutch players after C Ronaldo was given a limp on the previous game.

I hate to point this out but Italy thrashed Germany 4-1 in a friendly not so long ago. This idea Germany are certain to beat Italy is ridiculous. The game will be extremely tight, as they always are when Italy and Germany play in the later stages of a major tournament. Germany will feel they have to attack Italy being the hosts and this will suit the Italians. Luca Toni has got the monkey of his back and there is no doubt that if Italy can supply him on the break he can win the game for the Azzurri. This game will be won or lost by the smallest of margins, and I remind everyone that Germany has never beaten Italy in the World Cup, Italy has beaten Germany twice, both times written off by many people.
France will win comfortably against Portugal, who looked very ordinary against England, though France are being overhyped because they beat Brazil (strange I say this as I put 拢10 on France at 11/1 at the start of the competition).
Winner of Italy - Germany will win the 2006 World Cup.

By the way, even from the point of view of fanatic German football fans (like me), there was only one archrival for Germany: Holland.

Enough of this pathetic comments about not wanting Italy or Purtugal to win it because they promote diving and cheating in the game!!! Fair play? Yes we have heard of it, but has Rooney? Should Alan Shearer really say that if he were Rooney he would punch Ronaldo when the two meet each other at United? Now let me ask a question to you, have you heard of "Sour Grapes"?
You English only have yourselves and the pressure you put on the poor players to blame for your exit, not the Italians or the Portuguese. Now go ahead and support Germany, after all it's the Argentinian's fault if they ended up punching and kicking each other after the game, isn't it?
As for the Australians, you have a long long way to go before you start understanding the rules of football, which is not a version of rugby played with the feet, by the way.

I just hope that their goalkeeper in this World Cup won't commit the same atrocity their goalkeeper did in the match between France and Germany in the 1982 World Cup. Although people don't talk about how Germans can be surgical in their approach even to sports, we must remind them to play fair because, clinical doesn't have to be "surgical".

How so? Because the ref gave a penalty that was a 50/50 ?
Let's remember that the Aussie's didn't have one shot on goal, were very boring, didn't take advantage when in mumerical superiority, and the italian defender was sent off very unfairly. (Fifa acknowledged this)
Italy are in the best shape physicaly out of the 4, have the best forwards and the best defenders.

But I respect the other 3 teams left: they all great competitors and produced great football at times.

As for the obviously short sighted ginko and pilotasso, you obviously dont understand football is a CONTACT sport. You are proud of your players representing the your nation, throwing themself on the ground at the nearest gust of wind? I ask you this, if anybody is genunily hurt when do you see them rolling over 3 times, amazingly the pop up to their feet as soon as they see a card? FIFA needs to cut this out before the next world cup. Yes Rooney deserved a straight red for what he did but, did you not see the 2 players getting a piggy back off him before hand. He did not cheat (unlike yourselfs) he played as a true footballer stayed on his feet, due to pure strength which is a skill no portugeese player has ever had!I belive this fustration for not getting the foul lead to his card. If the portugal players can write their own rules then why should he not?

While all the bile against Xtiano Ronaldo? Oh sorry, I almost forgot, wasn鈥檛 he the one who put a gun to Wayne Rooney's head forcing him to attempt the castration of a fellow professional on a football field
Is that the only reason behind the visceral dislike against Ronaldo or has it got something to do with the towering self belief and authority with which he took his penalty compared to the craven failure of nerve of "two of Europe鈥檚 best midfielders" Steven Gerard and his fellow bottler Frank Lampard. I'll never forget the look of pure terror on both of their faces (and also Carragher) when they shuffled up to take the biggest spot kick of their lives.

Want to get Ronaldo out of the premiership? Then who will teach English players how to play penalties?

I've read many of the posts and my jaw just dopped - for example:
"Portugal - too greasy and spend too much time rolling around. (Call me evil but I also want to see Ronaldo in tears)"
"I expect our neighbors France to send those slimy little Portugese back down to their little strip of the Atlantic coast where they came from..."
鈥 Italy or Portugal promote diving and cheating in the game.
And the British press talks about the Portuguese loss of temper!?
Boy, if these aren鈥檛 a bunch of soar looses I don鈥檛 know what is. Have you guys been watching the same games as the rest of the world? Check the statistics overall Portugal even has less fouls than the England!!!
Then I find it funny, that a number of posters have appealed to fair play. Give me a break!!! Most of these guys need a wake up call and a cup of stong coffee to open up their eyes! What part of Rooneys fair play have you been talking about - His crushing his opponents groin or was it his shoving of Ronaldo? 鈥 Ohh I鈥檓 sorry, he didn鈥檛 crush his opponent鈥檚 groin he was 鈥渇inding footing鈥 as someone said, and it wasn鈥檛 a shove it was a pat! Saturday was the first time I - being a German - was in favour of an English team. I found Ronaldo麓s play acting (diving) in that game and against the Dutch disgusting. And England just played better than the Portuguese.
The Italians will be a tough nut to crack for the German team. In fact I cannot remember that we麓ve beaten them in a major tournament at all in the last 40 years...
So I fear (but do not hope) that it will be Italy vs France in the finals.
But I am looking forward to seeing at least two more games with Zidane - he just plays so magically.

well seen as they couldn't muster a goal against a poor england (I'm english, but also a realist) I can't see portugal beating france... No sour grapes, but there's no smoke without fire.. rooney was wrong to kick out, but he had been fouled.. and whenever do you see english players asking for opponents to be carded.. what irritates me, as why outstanding players like ronaldo and deco resort to such tactics.. remember deco in the uefa cup final against celtic.??
germany italy could be a classic.. germany are scoring freely, and italy are coming together nicely.. I am looking forward to that game very much.. If germany win, I see them beating france in the final.. Italy..?? well, that would be a great final vs france but could go either way..
as for england - we deserved to go out because we didn't perform - forget the penalties..

Hi England,
I'm feeling very sorry you dropped out against Portugal on Saturday. I was sure you'd get your revenge against big Phil this time and kept my fingers crossed all the way long. When I met some English fans that morning in the tram, we agreed England would win 2-1, but, unfortunately, it was again not meant to be.
I don't know why England is so bad at taking penalties, it was really painful to watch. Hope you'll break this curse one day!
Best wishes from Cologne :)

Apart from ginko n pilotasso/anonymous, I am so very surprised to see unanimity breaking out on this blog and as far as i can see its because of the way germany and france have PLAYED. Yes, us england supporters are a bit bitter about our exit, but others have also seen what we saw and i think that the national reputations of portugal and italy have suffered as a result..win the battle to lose the war. IT's sickening to everybody except your own supporters to see those trapaceiros (cheaters) diving and rolling over and over (do they get dizzy doing that?). Thats why we want France to trash u all!

Germany deserve to win it. They have been the best team in the competition (note use of the word TEAM i.e. not a collection of over-rated selfish individuals) and have played the most positive football. And all this when nobody gave them a hope before the tournament started. The country has also laid on what is arguably the best World Cup for travelling fans that there has ever been. COME ON GERMANY! You deserve it.

re the idiots defending Cristiano Ronaldo
Wayne Rooney in that 30 seconds before he got sent off showed more sporting spirit and determination than any of your face clutching, imaginary card waving, fight the officials after losing, roll around on the floor feigning injury countrymen ever will.
The thing is, if Wayne Rooney stamped on your balls, you wouldnt get up again. ever.
So I hope some of this invective goes the way of Ricardo Carvalho, next season, when Chelsea roll into town, the injury feigning cheat.
speaking as a united fan, I offer to personally pack Cristiano Ronaldos bags for him.

I quite like this and I hope even the most populist among the English tabloids will accept from now on that maybe WWII can be forgotten about when talking about Germany.
Now what has Italy done to get stick by some of the bloggers?
Italy deservedly came through the toughest group, had a tough game against Australia (decided by a controversial penalty, but also influenced by an absurd direct red card against Materazzi) and deservedly won against Ukraine.
Italy might not be flashy, inspiring or whatever, but it should anyway command respect (for the achievements in this and all the past WC) and I hope this will be your opinion on Tuesday evening may Italy win or lose.

Well, as a pure football fan, I'm glad we're out of the World Cup. We were mediocre at best and in no way would we have deserved to win the competition.
As a pure England fan, I'm gutted beyond words. Almost a full 48 hours since we made our usual exit, I still feel physically sick. This was supposed to be our year! Truly, truly gutted.
This is made all the worse by the fact that only last week, I got my hands on one of six semi-final tickets (all acquired through legal and official sources, I might add). Now I'm destined to watch Portugal and France. A spectacle, nonetheless, but not one I would've hoped to be watching. I had my heart set on a classic England vs. Brazil semi, but, alas, t'is not to be.
Now, who do I hope wins? Without any shadow of a doubt, GERMANY! They appear to have been excellent hosts for the competition, and I really like the country and the people, having visited a number of times in the past. So... and I never thought I'd hear myself say this... COME ON GERMANY!!

Of course Germany. Not because I live here and have been made very welcome. Not because my wife is German and my children half German. Certainly not because I work for a German company. But because Germany are an attacking team, that try to score goals first and worry about the defence afterwards. And because Juergen Klinsmann was courageous enough to change the system. Don't forget - football is fun and is about putting the ball in the back of the net. I'm as saddened as anyone that England weren't capable of this.

I want Germany to win, they have all the qualities to win the world cup, all the qualities England lack.
They play as a team. (How many shots did Lampard have, not one was converted)
They are well organised.(Rooney up front on his own was a disaster)
Evidence shows they have practiced penalties. (Carragher said after the match he wasn't aware he had to wait for the whistle, not organised at all)
They have bottle. (Englands player under most pressure who delivered was Owen Hargreaves who plays in the Bundesliga)
Come on Germany, take note England

Pilotasso,
i don't think its bad losers posting on this board, its just we don't like the way you play. Figo kicked in the face??????it was a tap and it was accidental, which as far i as could see was the same as wayne Rooneys challenge whilst trying to get to his feet and being fouled. OK he got a probably deserved red card as the poor defender will be talking like he's on helium for the next few weeks, but in reality, what we want is the game to be played in the right spirit. Its a game for highly paid athletes, who are supposed to be men!!!! Bear in mind our second sport in the UK is Rugby, where men don't moan about a small collision, or clutch their faces whenever a shoelace hits their shinpads. The game is supposed to be fast paced, and physical, the reason that england fans might start supporting the germans is because Portugal and especially Italy take the spirit out of the game. I thought there was a fifa directive to book players who run over brandishing invisible cards, why then do the likes of Portugal and Italy get away with it week in week out. They feign injury, until a card is produced under pressure and then jump up as if nothing had happenned. If the england/portugal game had been refereed by the man in the middle from the Argentina/Germany game, you probably would have had half a team left in the end.
OK you got some rough stuff from the Dutch but thats what frustration does to players who think you play like a bunch of pre-school girls. YOU BRING IT UPON YOURSELVES!!!.
Come on germany, and show these ponces how football is supposed to be played, England were rubbish, at least Germany play it in the spirit we expect it to played!!!

I have to agree, if you had of told me during the 1990 World Cup when I was squirming watching Klinsman diving about the place playing in possibly the most boring cup final ever, that he would become a Tottenham hero, then years later have me cheering on the most exciting German team ever, and the only semi-final team playing glorious football (Zidane excepted) in the 2006 World Cup I would have checked you into the nuthouse round the corner. Never would have believed it.

And please come off it, Anne of Paris! What is clinical about the way the Germans play? And thank you very much for reminding us of Toni Schumacher vs Battiston in 1982. Goodness, that was 24 years ago and besides, Schumacher apologized and Battiston accepted.
I'm somewhat relieved German-bashing did not vanish altogether... The beast is still alive. All it did was move to another place.

I have to say that I am amazed with the comments I have read so far ...
So Portugal is to be blamed for Rooney's violent agression ?? I can accept that England defended really well with 10 men, that they played well against Portugal and that Portugal was unable to take full benefit of numerical superiority ...
That Portugal reached the semi-finals with irregular exhibitions and that those players have potential for so much more ... But england played really bad througout the whole tournament, scored few goals ( I can remember Crouch scoring while pushing an opponent )and did nothing to deserve the positive reviews of any fan ...
At least Portugal has a great goalkeeper that decides games, and scored brilliant goals against Iran, Mexico and Holland ...
Much more than you can say about your squad.
If Cristiano Ronaldo is now someone to hate ... shouldn't you focus your anger and lack of sportsmanship on Rooney for being such a violent bully, and for Ericsson being such a conservative and defensive coach ... Learn to admire Ronaldo, Mourinho, Ricardo Carvalho, and other great Portuguese that brought some quality to your football.

it disgusts me to see a player down, supposedly hurt, who gets up when the opponent gets a card.. and any player mimicking the brandishing of a card should be given an instant yellow.. it would soon stop this unwelcome practice..

There coach has shown tactics you would expect from an army general of old. As for ronaldo yes he's a little toe-rag but let's not forget who the numty was who pushed him, two foot from the ref!!!!! We did excellently to hold an undefeated (in 16-19 matches) side, with 10 men for an hour, but the blame must rest squarely on our shoulders.....we weren't "robbed", we just fluffed it up as usual.

The one and only time Germany played a really good team, they were'nt impressive at all. In fact, Argentina easily deserved victory. I did'nt see a lot of the famous "free flowing football" the Germans were supposedly playing before that game, neither.
And then, I've had it with the home team winning the WC. The French squad of '98 might have won the tournament had it been played in another country - we'll never know, but they were very very strong. But this German team? Never ever.
I won't support them (they've got 70.000 supporters in the stadium already, not counting the stadium speaker who deemed it necessary to ask for support for the German team). So GO you Fran莽ais, Italiani & Portugueses!

Have to agree. After spending a week with German friends in both Dortmund and Saarland i have to say my perception of the German people has totally changed.
I was totally overwhelmed by the hospitality shown to me by the German people their openness, enthusiasm and willingness to make sure i was having a great time.
I watched the Poland vs Germany game in a Dortmund bar just half a mile from the stadium 40% Polish, 59% German and me. As the goal went in i jumped, cheered, hugged and danced in the shower of beer as if i was born again German.
Klinsman has a touchline enthusiasm that reminds me of that shown by Martin O'Neil when manager of Leicester (they were the days) he appears to kick every ball and experience every tackle.
A shame our celebrity footballers didn't have a similar type (12th man) on the bench instead of the withdrawn and clueless looking Sven.

I am staggered by the depth of bad feeling towards the portuguese in this blog ,the various comments about diving are just ridiculous have you forgotten that England only beat Argentina in the last world cup because Michael Owen dived to win a penalty?
In the Holland game the Portuguese were more sinned against than sinning Boulahrouz and Van Bommel both tried to put Ronaldo out of the match in the first 15 mins with outrageous tackles and Van Bommel, Van Persie, Kuyt and Robben were diving all over the place throughout the entire game but still you persist with this nonsense that northern europeans are somehow more honest than southern europeans.
I think your problem is that contrary to all the evidence you still persist in the misaprehention that England is a major force in world football and you can't accept that you were beaten by a nation you consider to be inferior.

So, tell me, have the Portguese football team, or any of their players, or any of the staff, ever done anything wrong ever in their entire lives? I heard Figo got a parking ticket when he was 17, but that's probably just evil propaganda from the British press as usual. Scholari is a paragon of virtue after all, isn't he?
Figo received an elbow in the face against the Netherlands. And this is something FIFA is cracking down on so, fair enough, the Dutchman was sent off. And what about Figo's headbutt a little earlier? Of course, I'm sure he was provoked and it was entirely the 成人快手 camerman's fault.
I'd like to quote you on this, from Post 6:
"'A week and a half ago there were English chants "there were 4 bombers in the air..." on german streets.
Now you support them? Just shows some people how they kid themselves."
That's interesting. Because one group of fans sang anti-German songs it means the whole English nation is not allowed to support Germany now? If you can make such sweeping generalisations, am I not entitled to think that all Portguese are whining, cheating, greasy, girly-looking, shirt-lifting divers whose greatest achievement in football was to lose to England in 1966?
Fair enough.
There's only one person kidding themself on this Blog, and that's you with your unswerving belief that the Portuguese team an innocent of all crimes. When you look at your team from a more neutral view - hey, try asking some Germans what they think of the Portuguese football team - you'll see that your players aren't angels, but they are a bunch of choir-boys.
P.S. Come on Germany!!

A tough one this:
Germany - Traditional mortal rivals, however, they play fair and well and have been model hosts
Italy - On the one hand a bunch of corrupt, psychotic cheats, on the other hand they could do with something to cheer about
France - Again traditional rivals, however, they are now playing a fine brand of flair football, shades of rather cynical acting on occasion
Portugal - Diving, cynical, violent cheats
Putting that altogether it's basically a choice of whether to cheer on Ruud Van Nistelrooy & Wayne Rooney going medieval on Cristian Ronaldo's ass to either a fine French red or German beer

I am a Scot and lived in Germany for three years. I have always raved about Germany as a great country with wonderful kind and colourful people but had the feeling that my ravings fell on deaf ears.
I have supported the German team from the start (along with England I must add) because of their spirit and their simple approach - they want to play football and they want to win for their fans. That's it. Klinsmann is fantastic and has given his team such an unfaltering self-belief (even in the face of much criticism) which I think will take them to the final.
That being said, what I find most heart warming about this World Cup is the reception the rest of the world has received in Germany and how the rest of the world has embraced it and partied with the Germans. Its great to see that their efforts in hosting this World Cup have paid off and that so many people now have such a positive view of Germany and its people - its about time. Being a Scot, I am of course fiercely patriotic and am delighted that the Germans are now once again daring to wave their flag and have those same feelings of pride and love for their country.
Somebody said above that if the German's were knocked out now they would still have won the tournament, I couldn't agree more - but I am pretty sure, that is never going to happen :o)

I am German and surprised too about the way the German team played so far and the German public celebrates this world cup.
First time in my life a kind of proudness rises up. It is very unusual to show national signs in Germany.
Above all I really dislike teams doing the diver in the crunch time to get a penalty. This is the reason why Italy doesn't deserve to win.
You will not see such behaviour with German players (except of some Ballack actions). Klose would rather try to make the goal than to rise up his hands and to scream like being shot in the penalty area.
The FIFA should give red cards to those actors after the game therefore this unfair stuff disappears from the football fields.
I would be very appreciated if the English support the German team in the next games.
Germany is not only culturally close to England but also in their style to play the game.
I still remember the '96 semi final as one of the greatest matches I ever saw.
And as a last note: In my home town LEIPZIG there are many people wearing the 3 lions shirt.

I'm going for Germany vs. France in the final too, for many of the reasons given above. Look, very few English fans are trying to suggest that Rooney didn't deserve to get sent off. Of course he did. But what annoys so many is that if he'd just dived when the first challenge came in, then he'd have won a free kick and the outcome MAY (possibly) have been different.
To be honest, neither Holland nor Portugal deserved to go through from that game, it was absolutely appalling. Blame the referee if you will, but he had to work with what he was given and the tackles (and the dives) from both sides brought the game into disrepute far more than the refereeing.
So, what do the England players do? Do they see that simulation and diving is the way to prosper, and so start doing it themselves? What is the alternative?
I have to say I hate it every bit as much on the odd occasion that I've Steven Gerrard or Michael Owen or whoever dive in an England shirt. It's not "who's the best football team", it's "who can con the referee the best", and as soon as that happens I'm afraid I lose interest in the game.

Before England can WIN it must first learn how to be good LOSERS!!!! Its as simple as that. Rooney is a highly talented / "potential" world class player, but his consistent lack of discpline reflects very poorly on the rest of the team. Its simply not credible that Ronaldo asked for a RED card!!! Plus a referee of Olizondo's experience is not easily influenced by the "heat of the moment" as a player would. England were NEVER NEVER tested throughout this tournament. They played valiantly w/ one man down but in the end they simply didn't live up to the HYPE, which the English media are very good at. GO the the www.guardian.co.uk and read the intelligent commentary from Bobby Robson and others.

For those that haven't seen it, watch the clip until the end. What exactly is Ronaldo up to before the game has even started? Will FIFA investigate this? Most likely not because Rooney is not prone to falling over and rolling around. Admittedly not really a headbutt, but certainly not in the spirit of the game. Poor old David Beckham if Ronaldo goes to Madrid.

OK.. so it seems Rooney deserved to get booked. Did her deserve to get a red card though, when compared to Figo's head-butt in the previous match? Ronaldo's head-butt in the England match?
The ref was a victim of the pressure I'm afraid... no 'one' person was to blame. Not even Christiano Ronaldo, though he clearly 'DID' try to get Wayne sent off. Only a blind man would say otherwise.
Portuguese players fell left right and centre, claiming free-kicks and then getting straight back on their feet and looking confused when the ref refused to buckle. The only reason why England, on paper, committed more fouls than Portugal was that out of every ten dives/collapses by a Portuguese player, maybe 2 succeeded in getting a free kick. As for the English, who stayed on their feet (which, incidentally Rooney was trying to do when the incident happened) the corresponding number of free kicks would logically not have materialised.
Germany France final? Can't decide who I'd like to win. Germany for consistant ability and strength. France for nostagic restoration of pride and a swansong for Zidane (and a great auto-biography!)

It seems to me that the English are bad losers - first most of them said "it's fine by me if England play boring football so long as they win" now they complain about the Portuguese (who played with a quarter of their team on the bench on Saturday, and it was their worst game so far) and support the Germans because they 'play attacking football' (we should probably be sad no South American teams are in the semis). Shouldn't the English want the Portuguese to win? So they can say they lost to the eventual winners? But I guess it goes back to age-old inter-European racism - with Der Spiegel publishing an article calling the Italians greasy and lazy, what can you expect. Can't imagine cheering Germans after that.

Well,
as usual stereotypes are hard to get rid of...
So Germany has apparently played some very exciting football by simply never looking like winning against Argentina, ending up with hardly 30% of ball possession and generally controlling the game. Had this been done by Italy, everybody would have just called it "catenaccio".
Italians don't generally brag about, we are quietly and humbly going forward and this is exactly our strength. We know we have had a couple of bad games but then again you have to remember that this is the last part of the tournament and we are coming from 2 outstanding years of good football.
Germany has never beaten Italy in an official game (last game in Florence 4-1 to Italy, not bad for an over defensive team...) and I believe in tradition.
So please keep up your stereotypes, we are just content to win...

Definitely supporting Good Old Germany now, although the French did impress. Just hope the Italians lose, otherwise we will never hear the end of their overexaggerated self-congratulation at being the "best team in the world", even though they failed to really impress and had a more-than-easy path the the semi-final. They were celebrating their quarter-final win as in the streets if they had just won their first World Cup ever..... Oh and Pilotasso, please don't make any more posts, the defence of your team is getting slightly tedious.

dipanna, your reference to the 4-1 defeat to germany in the friendly before the tournament holds no credence. before you were looking at a german team who had no self belief and no support, and who have now turned around and played the best football of the current tournament and rightly deserve thier place in the semi-finals.
having german roots im relishing the sight of italy going home, because they are overly arrogant (what were your papers saying about australia? and look how you struggled to win) and thier football has been a catalogue of diving and blatant fowling when the game is clearly not going thier way. italy do not deserve the win at all.

Germany has played the most terrifyingly boring football ever! I thought I was going to go in a coma during Germany-Poland, and also the game against Argentina was painful to watch.
Italy and France on the other hand are really starting to gel as a team, and both played exciting games, especially France-Brazil and France-Spain. I bet on an Italy-France final, with the Italians as favourites.

The problem about you, english men, is that you do not have anything between your legs!
Because if you did, you would definetely understand what happened in the game you were sent home and why Ronaldo did what he did.
You know, fair play is also about knowing how to loose!

Being German, first thanks for the warm comments here. I also would have wanted England to get to the next round, because I think the Portugal-Netherlands game was a disgrace to this sport by both teams. Well, now France has to do the job. I would love to see a final France-Germany, because I would love to see this young and energetic team play such an experienced and clever player as Zizou. And then it doesn't really matter who wins, as long as it's just a great game to watch. Italy? Well, in theory I have nothing against them winning either, but with the huge scandal going on in their league... Anyway, 4 more games, 4 times fun. I hope you'll all enjoy it!

It's amazing what football makes people say and forget.
Nobody ever talked about Portugal but now they've sent England home they're the enemy. Please, give me a break! If you played that well, why the hell didn't you win the game?
Vacation in Portugal where everybody treats you well, it's ok. But loosing from Portugal is a problem... Germany is now great. Where have you been? Queen Victoria would die again if she was alive. Nice people, the germans? Of course, they don't speak a word od english and you don't speak a word of german...perfect combination! Everybody loves each other. Learn how to lose, live with it.

What nonsense! When I lived in Germany I found the Germans went out of their way to tell me what they liked about the UK. In fact, at times I felt obliged to put them right regarding a few things...
Germany deserves to win. From being totally overlooked at the outset, the team has shown what self-belief can do for a side - scoring a winner in the dying minutes of the match against Poland and fighting for the equaliser against Argentina. I just wish that sports journalists in the UK were as fair as the German press in their coverage of the Cup.

Well -- I for one am rooting for France. Why? Well, first, because of Zizou -- a complete artist of the game, who is of Algerian descent to boot (me being from there); second, because it is the oldest team in the cup, and I will always root for the underdog; and three, it may end up being the first African team to win the cup -- yes African! Except for Fabien the goalie and Frank, the rest of the starters are of African origin! See:
Go France!

We wanted to host the world cup as good as possible and I'm convinced we did.
I talked to some english fans at the fanfest in nurnberg, drank some beer etc and we had a good time. Thats what the WorldCup is all about. Meet fans from all over the world and have fun.
Let's keep a sporty rivalry between our countries but without hate, violence and things which happened more than 60 years ago.
Last but not least: the one and only english player who scored in the penalty shutout against Portugal plays in ........... Germany :-)

I'd like to say I'm up for Germany, because my wife's German, and they've played some exciting football. But despite having lived here for 10 years, my heart's not in it. Maybe it's just how we're brought up in England, maybe it's the constant snide comments on German TV throughout the whole tournament(exception: Otto Rehagel, who at least thought Rooney shouldn't have been sent off). I don't think I could bear it if they actually won and we had to put up with the smug grins for another four years (or more). Come on Italy! Oh, and since I'm here, I'm going to have to swallow a prejudice and wish France good luck against a certain nation of cheating somethingorothers.

Full doors down:
The 1966 game is long gone. Here in Portugal it is remenbered as Eusebio's historical game. We are all +ast that, the same we are past the elemination to france in 2000.
What I was trying to tell you and all of those who think we cheated past the english (and the dutch) is that, although regretable, falling and rolling on the floor after a contact to impress the referee was not invented by the portuguese. Portugal players did it, I reckon that but we are not the only ones doing it and this is being vastly blown out of proportions to the point people think it had any impact in the Englands game. With the rooneys incident none of the portuguese players throwed himself to the floor to try to get him out.
Even the british commentators found the Portugal-Mexico enjoyable, what has changed their opionions since then? the fact that we became their potential oponents?
And about the Figos headbutt. He lost his head true, but he also didnt made contact with the ducth player wich in turn was very skillfull in diving to the floor to pretend there was.
( didnt you see the background between their heads? No perspective views in england?)
He yelled, regretable, be he had at least the right to express his aprehension for being hunted down on the pitch (Kicked in the face against mexico and elbowed in the face Against the dutch)
For your information he had never seen a red card for 3 years, was he such a criminal?
It seems that in the commentators view Figos overrated headbut is less excusable than Rooneys Stamp.
Also, the difference in treatment of both teams in both of our countries is very different.
All english players are treated with respect, even Rooney. Portuguese are widely labeled as cheaters in england.
In a way we even didnt do so with the dutch and believe me we had reasons for complaints.
And whats this paranoia that Portugal deserved to loose if England didnt have a consistent perfomance in ALL games and failed to score the penalities?
Did we dive enough to justify englands failiure? I would like to see this relativistic theory to be explained to me.

A message from Paris.
Portugal try to win by ANY means possible by rolling around on the floor screaming like little babies having their toys taken away, pretending that they have been fouled to gain an advantage against their fellow professional when in reality there has been minimal contact.
Maniche, Carvalho et all will be remembered for being in a team full of cheats, and the lasting legacy of the Portugal team will not be of any form of success, skill or admiration.
I sincerely hope France give Portugal the hammering they deserve, not only on behalf of my country but also for the brave and honourable English team whom Portugal fail to score against in normal time despite having a player extra for almost 70 minutes.

Ronaldo should be shown the door by united. As you know I hate Utd, but to do that to a club team mate is a disgrace. Is football not a team game, you don't do that to a team mate. But do we expect any different from a Portuguese winger after there showing against Holland though?? Not really.
I must say though, it isn't that that lost England the game. What has cost us is an England manager with no passion or tactical astuteness(Will McClaren change this??)and an unwillingness to make tactical changes once the first whistle has gone, a 17 year old with less international experience than Micheal Ricketts (says it all!), Players who lack passion believing there reputations (in the English press) are enough to mean a win on the international stage.

I'm also an Englishman who'll be supporting Germany all the way. The French began with turgid football, even if they're now getting better. The Italians have cheated their way this far, and it would be hard to support Portugal in the wake of "that" match against the Dutch and now, of course, Ronaldogate. The Germans, by contrast, have played great, attacking football from the start. Even at 2-0 up against Sweden Klinsmann was shouting at his team to keep pushing forward! What's more the Germans have been wonderful World Cup hosts. The warmth and affection they've shown not just for their own team but also for those of others (I was at the Ivory Coast v Serbia game in Munich and the Germans around me were wearing IC shirts and screaming them along!) and indeed for the whole tournament itself has just been fantastic. Great country, great atmosphere, great people, and more like us English than we'd probably admit. The Germans know how to drink, they love their football, and they've shown nothing but respect not just for the English but also for the many thousands of fans who've visited Germany in the past few weeks. So thanks for the hospitality, good luck against Italy, and I'm all for a German as World Champions!

Tim, people keep saying that Germany only had easy opponents and has yet to show against better teams. Same can be said about Argentina. The 6:0 vs Serbia is totally worthless. Against the Netherlands or Germany they failed to deliver. Argentina of all teams doesn't deserve more credit. After a lucky goal from a cornerball they went into total defense despite probably having better players. It's good to see them gone.

just a quick reply to bobbylebonfire...
you see, what happens bobby, is that results aren't made by reputation. teams prove their value in the field.
and how can england supporters can call portugal cheaters after that english player (lennon i think) made a dive, after a clean tackle from nuno valente, just trying to full the ref into calling a penalty?
and what about portugal playing with 1 more player during great part of the game and didn't score? we were almost playing with our 2nd team and we were the only ones who were actually trying to score, not just pulling the team back and hold the draw hoping to decide in the penalty shootout
now in the semis, we'll be able to play with the main players, and if france continues to play the way they did last two games, we'll be finally able to show our true qualities and it'll be, no doubt, an amazing game :)

If you're only looking at history and the "facts", Italy should win against Germany, most likely.
But the beauty of football lies in the unpredictability. Even though Italian players are more skilled, better-looking and possibly more fun to watch, the Germans might get their act together and beat them. They would need an impressive performance, from all their players.
If they fail, they've still managed an impressive world cup campaign. So have Italy. The match has all the ingredients for a classic, exciting encounter, the tension couldn't be much higher. Let's just hope for a fair and exciting match (not ruined by fouls, cards or penalties).

I've been living in Munich for a few months now and the atmosphere during the World Cup has been beyond all my expectations. Of course there was massive disappointment to lose on penalties again but with Owen, Beckham and Rooney all missing for the semis (plus an unlucky Lampard misfiring) could we have got any further? A point I wanted to make was that I was expecting a lot of playacting by the Portugese players but in reality apart from a bit of gamesmanship from Ronaldo (fake headbutt, cheeky wink to the bench after Rooney's red, stopping during his penalty runup to check which way Robinson was moving) there was little to complain about.
After watching the game in the fan fest area on of the Portugese fans wanted to swap shirts but I couldn't really let mine go (23 Walcott).
I have been very surprised by how well the Germans have been playing particularly how they were embarrassed in the pre-tournament friendlies against Italy and Japan (albeight a decent recovery from 2-0 down). When it really mattered they've been superb and I wouldn't begrudge them winning it. And the Khan loving bavarians are finally appreciating my Mad Jens t-shirt. However, I think the form is with France right now, Zizou looks superb and Ribery and Henry are finally starting to fulfill their promise.

Dont get me wrong I love England but I seem to find that england and the UK isolates its culture on its own, hay maybe being on an island has something to do with it haha.
The Germans actually dont even have a negative view of the England or the UK, holding the strange little island in high regard and infact many have a love that even i find baffaling :).
One thing I always found funny was that the Germans Main football rival always seemed to be the Dutch and never really England.
Ahh well none of it ever really matters. what truely matters is that we begin to understand that stereotypes shouldn't be taken so seriously and rather left in its commical context.

I think you should get a big wooden spoon for christmas, you should not stir up such a senstive issue with nothing to base it on, the world cup has been 100% success with no racist problems maybe your spainsh counterparts should take a leaf from this book. As for being a 1/4 of your team on the pitch well thats what you get for hacking chunks out of people and not playing a MANS game. E.g deco hacking down a player then throwing the ball away, coz he spat his dummy out for not winning the origional foul. As for the south american teams being there, why should they??? do they have a god given right to be in the finals that i am not aware of?? I say good riddens to them im sick of all the rolling and play acting, they should take a lesson of the european teams eg. germany, england, sweeden, etc.

yes rooney deserved a red but if the ref had contol of the game it would have been avoided did you not see the 2 players getting a piggy back of rooney? as for card begging ronaldo ran about 50 yards about the fastest all game, then winked at the bench, you cant tell me that it did not influance the ref? then winking just rubs salt in the wound, we think we are stupid or nieve? you cant tell me
he didn't want him off. What was ronaldo up to in the tunnel before tthe game? where is the sportsmanship iin that? Yes we are bitter, of course we are, anyone would be if you are cheated. Its ironic to see so many brits backing Germany to win the World Cup. What happened to the "RAF Bombers in the sky"?. I understand the agony against the portuguese, since we've kicked out England from the last two major competitions and our clubs Sporting and Benfica showed the door to Newcastle, Boro, Man Utd and Liverpool in the last two seasons. And guess what? Just by diving and argueing at the refs. Its amazing! And all this fuss about Cristiano's behaviour only demonstrates how ridiculous some press gets. Its not our fault that England doesnt have a player with the skill of Figo, Cristiano or Deco. You have a determined team with some very good players and a few of those good players, like Joe Cole, who are at their prime because they are coched by Mourinho who, by the way, is portuguese as well...
Complain about this post
Thanks for taking the time to respond, Pilo, but you've made the points you want to make without answering any of mine. Nevermind: you've still written enough bias to argue against.
"although regretable, falling and rolling on the floor after a contact to impress the referee was not invented by the portuguese. Portugal players did it, I reckon that but we are not the only ones doing it"
I'm glad you can admit Portuguese players did it. That's the first time you've admitted to any fault on the part of the Portuguese. But none of the posts I have read on this blog claim that the Portuguese invented diving and cheating.
What a lot of the posters are saying - including Germans and other nationalities - is that the Portuguese are one of the nations who are particularly good at diving. England invented football, but we're not the best at it. Portugal didn't invent cheating, but this World Cup has shown them to be pretty good at it.
"With the rooneys incident none of the portuguese players throwed himself to the floor to try to get him out."
True. The injured player was already on the floor, and I won't argue with that. But it doesn't excuse Ronaldo's behaviour if he did try to get Rooney sent off; and it doesn't excuse the behaviour of the Portuguese team during that match and during their game against the Netherlands.
"Even the british commentators found the Portugal-Mexico enjoyable, what has changed their opionions since then? the fact that we became their potential oponents?"
I enjoyed the Portugal-Mexico match, it was certainly better than the Portugal-Angola match. What changed my opinion of the Portuguese team was the PT-NL match. I'm not saying the Dutch were innocent - those studs in Ronaldo's thigh made me wince - but the behaviour of the Portuguese was embarrassing.
"And about the Figos headbutt. He lost his head true, but he also didnt made contact with the ducth player wich in turn was very skillfull in diving to the floor to pretend there was."
Are you seriously telling me that Figo - in his prime one of the greatest footballers in the world - failed to make contact with a stationary object? I know he's old and past his best, but I'm sure Figo wouldn't miss if he aimed a header at a stationary target.
"( didnt you see the background between their heads? No perspective views in england?)"
Don't know about England, I live in Germany. German TV footage clearly shows contact. It shows the Dutch player taking a long time to fall over (which I do not condone) but it certainly shows Figo headbutting an opponent. How's the sense of perspective in Portugal these days?
"He yelled, regretable, be he had at least the right to express his aprehension for being hunted down on the pitch (Kicked in the face against mexico and elbowed in the face Against the dutch)"
I think that shows the difference between us. You think Figo's actions are excusable. I say headbutting an opponent can never be excused. Being kicked in a different match against different opposition is no excuse, and being elbowed - AFTER the headbutt - is also no excuse.
Figo is a cheat, and a dirty cheat at that. It's a shame you try to defend the indefensible.
"For your information he had never seen a red card for 3 years, was he such a criminal?"
I've not watched him in every game for 3 years so I don't know if diving and cheating is normal in his game. Maybe he's just very good at not getting caught? He headbutted his opponent exactly when the referee had his back to him. And even if he's not normally a cheat, it still does not excuse a headbutt.
"It seems that in the commentators view Figos overrated headbut is less excusable than Rooneys Stamp."
It seems that in your view Figo's headbutt was acceptable but Rooney's stamp wasn't.
In my view Rooney deserved a red card for that stamp. In my view, Figo deserved a red card for that headbutt. Don't lecture other people on being fair when you're not being fair yourself.
"All english players are treated with respect, even Rooney. Portuguese are widely labeled as cheaters in england."
There is a reason the Portuguese are labelled as cheats in England. It's probably for the same reason English fans have been labelled as hooligans for so long. We deserved that tag, we recognised we had a problem, and we took steps to deal with it. After a lot of hard work are we now beginning to lose that tag: there has been very little trouble from English fans this year.
Portugal don't even accept that they have a problem with cheating and diving, so how are you every going to lose the tag of being a team of cheats?
You've got a long way to go before you gain respect in the footballing world: the English don't respect you, the Dutch certainly don't, and every German I speak to here despises Portugal for cheating.
"And whats this paranoia that Portugal deserved to loose if England didnt have a consistent perfomance in ALL games and failed to score the penalities?"
Sometimes a team deserves to win, sometimes a team doesn't. Sometimes both teams deserve to win, and only penalties can determine the winner.
After Saturday's game, I don't believe either team deserved to win. As an American fan said during Extra Time "Can't we kick out both these teams and bring back a good team like Ghana?" :-)
"Did we dive enough to justify englands failiure? I would like to see this relativistic theory to be explained to me."
Did I say that? Did I say England would have won if Portugal hadn't cheated? Maybe we would have, maybe we wouldn't. Other posters can debate that. I'm not going to explain any theory to you except this one:
In two games in succession Portuguese players have dived and cheated. As a football fan, this disgusts me. My theory is that any team which cheats does not deserve to win the World Cup. Sadly my theory may be wrong, and we may see Portugal lift the trophy. But I will cheer any country which plays against Portugal in the hope that a team of cheats, supported by fans which condone cheating and diving, will be sent back to whichever hole they crawled out of.

I can see and I accept that the vast majority here would like Germany to win. Fair enough, that may well happen as they have 2 out of 3 results (a draw means sure win through the penalty shoot-out).
Just don't write off the Italians too soon : in spite of what they would have you believe Germany has so far NEVER beaten Italy in an official tournament and the last friendly finished 4-1 to Italy.

RE:145
what you actually mean to say is i like watching people with no balance and no undderstanding of sportsmanship. You like watching all the bad aspects of football, diving, stimulation, cheating, acting, people who play this type of sport should be ashamed of themselves. It is a game not meant to be a con. the only suitable solution i can see to this issue is to use technology with a 3rd referee, unfortunatly this will bring a stop to free flowing football, but with narrow minded people such as yourself this is the answer possible to ensure the "best team" wins on the day. As for being hooligans that is a very big generalisation, I saw no trouble out there except from a mexican, and some argentinians. Ask any german their impression of the english over there and it will be very positive.

In the end, I believe, four good teams that played positive football most of the times have made it to the semis. But the way Germany played for the 70 minutes against Argentina was neither poisitive nor exiciting. So their attack minded carefree attitude that everyone is talking about is a complete myth. A facade for show against weak teams. Now that Germany is the weakest team left, I think we will see the same kind of boring football that it played for the first 70 minutes against Argentina. I think now the French will beat the Italians in the final to win the cup.

Lots of greetings, and remember: there will always be nice people here to welcome other nice people from all over the world...And show me a country where there are no idiots at all...just chose the right hosts ! Truth is that we are in an English blog, wich have are naturaly visited primarily By english fans. You expect this to be Impartial and statisticaly representative? dont make me laugh.
As for complex of inferiority, It has shown who had the most nerves in the game...realy
And yeah, now that someone mentioned it (wich I dont give as importance asn most people here) that the English tried to rip a penalty at the cost of a perfect interception (player dived after the ball had been taken off his feet).
Anti-spectacle? If the game was boring I would have to atribute that fault to england as they stuck all players to defense during the whole game as Portugal attacked. Was that important anyway? No, but then wrong people is being accused to be cumprits of a poor spectacle.
Again Portugal has shown no lack of respect torwards ANY team, why the same cant be donne on your side?
Look at the press, its a disgrace, and the only real disgrace on this chanpionship.

I wish the "Portugal cheated" brigade would be a bit more realistic. NEITHER England NOR Portugal deserved to be in the last four on evidence of football played.
That's why I am backing France and hoping for a Germany v France final in which Zidane will prove UBERMEISTER. Justice beckons and that 1982 Schumacher foul on Battiston will finally be avenged: come on the Frogs.

Paul,
I agree with you that I'd like to go ahead and see Germany progress to the final and win the cup.
Out of all of the teams left in the tournament, they've been the most attacking-minded side.
However, I really feel that Italy has their number and will pull off a remarkable performance against the host country.
For me, it'll be a France against Italy final with the Italians lifting the cup.
Cheers,

yes it is just football thats why it hurts so much, we are possibly the most passionate fans in the world, due to the fact if you look at our team, ability wise they have arguably one off the best teams in the world, team wise we look like a sunday leauge team. English football should take a lesson off the german team, learn how to play with as a team, to work for each other, to communicate, to organise, to get the winning mentality......to take penalties!!! fundementally i put it down to the premiership, too many of the english team are more concerned about their egos, looks and money, rather than performance.

I have found the Germans to be very dedicated footballers ever since I first watched them in 1966 and that is why at the start of the present World Cup I put out a small bet on them to win it and got odds of 8 - 1. I wish now that I had bet more as I am sure they are going to win.
It is also so nice to see how warmly the Germans are welcoming other supporters to their country. Come on Germany!

I think Germany doesnt deserve to win the Cup. I will give my reasons, before you start throwing flames.
a)The only reason they have come this far, is because they didnt have strong opponents in their group. The fact that they huffed and puffed and struggled with Argentina proves the fact.
b)They lack footballing skills. Tell me one german player thats a delight to watch. None. Period.
c) Inspite of telling the press that they will not "man mark" anybody, it was a pity to see THREE people surround Carlos Tevez, everytime he had the ball and still he managed to outwit them at times. Ballack was always running around the Master Riquelme.
d) For almost 75 minutes, they were getting desperate, no intelligent passes, no great play. A great team doesnt chase the ball for 75 minutes.
e) Their gameplan was intimidation, long shots, man marking and advantage of the home crowd. Klose taking out the Goalkeeper is also suspect now, Since they must have known if it came to penalty shootdown they need to take him down.
f)Their subsitute threatened Tevez once with his hands on his chest. What a shame !. If i was Tevez, i would have thrown a fit to the referee and made a drama out of it, before the crowd, to let everyone know what they are doing.
g)Last but not the least, Argentina coach screwed things up by making bad substitutions, taking the best argentina players out of the ground and not bringing in Messi.
h) So it was a cakewalk for the germans in the last 20 minutes. It see
ms that the germans employed every tactic there is, except play great football. Unfortunately that works sometimes.
That being said, i would rather want France to win the world cup, because the last game with Brazil had some great game play, subtle passes and great control of the ball. Not a single incident of "wrestling".
Klinsmann and Co, might be on Cloud Nine, but they know they cant stay up there for a long time, for sooner or later the other team can use the same tactics and also play some great football.
I dont care for the CUP, for me great play matters the most and thats why i watch it. The best game and the best goal so far came from Argentina vs Mexico. And that for me is the World Cup.

I see lots of intolerance and prejudice English supporters against Portugal and Italy. The same attitude is evident in the Germa press (Der Spiegel racist article)
First, England really deserved to go out from the world cup having maybe the best team in the world (this year you had really the best squad of the world cup: best defense and best midfield without doubts) and being forced to penalty shoot-out by portougal without its two best players Deco and Costinha.
Second, Rooney's behaviour was very violent and aggressive and he just deserved the red card. Why did the BBc commentors told that De Rossi's foul was "horrendous" and intentional against the US and didn't say a single negative word against Rooney? Why are they so biased and partial? ).
Third, Itlay did not cheat..the penalty against Australia was dubius but the Aussie's defender was stupid to tackle that way at the end of injury time. This is the basic difference between football teams with internbational experience and football temas without it. An english, italian or french defender would not have tackled that way knowing that the referee would have given the penalty to restore the equilibrium the he broke with the absurd and invented red card to Materazzi (again not a word of negative comment on this episode by the biased and partial 成人快手). commentors). The same attitude of the British supporters (at least in this forum and by the BBc commentors the) is taken by the german press that is insulting Italian people everyday. Maybe this is the reason why British are now so symphatetic with Germany( very strange..remember "there were 4 bombers in the air")
If this is what they call "fair play".... I am glad we do not have it as british and germans say
Enjoy the rest of the world cup.

I'm afraid I disagree with EnglandFan. I too am an Englishman living abroad and before moving to Munich almost 4 years ago lived in Lyon, France for a good couple of years. I have had the pleasure therefore of witnessing a European and a World Cup campaign surrounded by fans of either country and have to say that the Germans this year have been brilliant. Much as I loved my time in France and the French, my ex-colleagues and friends were absolutely hell to put up with during the tournaments (when the French won Euro 2000 and when the fates conspired against them in the last WC). They were almost as gleeful when England exited to Brazil in 2002 as they were when France won in 1998 and 2000. This morning, I felt the all too familiar dread of the first day back at work following a sporting downfall but was amazed to find colleague after colleague come and visit me to commiserate about Rooney being sent off (they felt it was a trailing leg not a stamp) and how marvellously we played with just 10 men and how an England-Germany final would have been a fitting end to the tournament. Having a common disregard for the Argentinian lack of sportsmanship also helped ;-). I shall be supporting the Germans from here on in but also hoping that we get to see Ronaldo bawling on Wednesday as the French knock Portugal out on penalties. Come on Deutschland!

The Italians beat the Germans 4 to 1 in Italia. Germany can only win if they shoot the penalties properly against the world best keeper Gianluigi Buffon. Without Frings the midfield depends on Ballack Borowski and Kehl. The Italian can put del Piero into the match because he scored a goal and assisted two goals in the friendly match.
The French can reach the final in Berlin because of 2000. They defeated the Potugese by a golden Goal of Zidane. Their defense is world class. french champion Abidal german champion Sagnol english champion Gallas Italian champion Thuram
The Portugese need Deco and Costinha. The forwards of France are the best. Henry and Treyeugeut can score against every defence.

I too have been to Germnany, and spent a wonderful 2 and a half weeks travelling around supporting England. Although i had no tickets i went for a world cup carnival, a big party, and 'a time to meet friends' as the organisers put it.
I can honestly say i was not dissappointed. the fan fests, although such a simplistic idea were amazing and generated a special atmosphere, especially the ones where all the English fans flocked to see their team. The Germans were truely fantastic hosts, and were only ever nice. They all wished myself and England goodluck and were desperate to see us in the final with them. Unfortunately for us, we have a team that unlike the world cup winning rugby team, does not know how to win, to seize the moment when they are indeed superiro to the opposition. There are many reasons for this, starting with Sven, but that is another story.
For now i would just like to congratulate the German people and wish them all the best for the World Cup. The World Cup has brought new vigour and life to a country in economic trouble with high unemployment and low morale. Again we have seen how the wonders of Football can make a truel amazing impact, reinvesting a sense of pride among Germans, with their team and their country and i would like to wish them goodluck.
That was not easy to say as an Englishman, but considering the other teams that are there, i think Germany deserves it for being fantastic hosts.

Personally, I am hoping Germany win on Tuesday and France win on Wednesday to set up a France vs Germany final, which will be very spicy after 1984. But on balance, I would like Germany to win because, they have played positive football, they haven't won anything for a while, and have been great hosts. Germany, and not because England are out. It was ever Germany, Brazil or Argentina with Italy a good bet.Brazil and Argentina have gone. Why one of these four? Because they are the countries that know best how to prepare for this tournament. How do I know? I've studied the statistics from 1930 to the present day.Germany because of one reason above all others. Their temperament. Germany because they do not cheat, they're not thugs, they do not let down their teammates and their fans with petulant and thuggish behaviour. Their players have far too much class for that. Nor do German players or their wives or their girlfriends constantly court celebrity. They are truly professional and care only about the standard of their soccer, not how much the next girly or lad mag is going to pay them for a picture or story. Germany because they believe in their own. They do not go looking for useless foreign coaches. Germany because its FA is not afraid to embrace managers who challenge complacency and poor establishment procedures. Germany because it does not allow interference from the celebrity factor, especially but not exclusively the negative influences on the game of those silly wives and girlfriends trying to outdo each other in the sex and binge drinking stakes. Germany because the soul of soccer has not yet been prised from either the domestic or the national game by dubious agents, corporate business, TV stations, the media. Germany because the country is more balanced, measured, mature and sensible with a manager who leads by example in all these aspects. Germany because it does not rely upon sex drugs and rock and roll to sell its natioanal game, it lets the soccer do the talking.

We're an English/Swiss/Dutch family and have been enjoying this tournament in all its facets. From the beginning, we decided to cast aside each and every inclination towards nationalism and just enjoy the football. We found our sympathies leant towards the African teams, who showed great credit in the playoffs. We were chuffed that Switzerland got this far, but experience will out...
That the Swiss, Dutch and English nations are not particularly enamoured of the German nation goes (almost) without saying, but the German team are playing their best football for maybe 15years.
It was also fantastic to experience brief "flashes" of Zizou, who belongs in the annals of football together with Bobby Charlton and Pele. All in all, we'd like a Germany/France final, despite the protests of close Italian friends AND notwithstanding the latest scandals in Italian football circles(you can't be too careful in Switzerland!) It's about time the rivalry with Germany became only a football rivalry. I find it disgusting we still feel it is neccessary as a nation to rub it in about the two world wars - many Germans feel embarrassed about what transpired in their nation in the past and I feel it is wrong it should still be being brought up.
I consider myself a patriotic Brit - I like my country, not a nationalist like those who sing "there were 5 German bombers in the sky" and "two world wars and one world cup chants" who feel Britian is better than every other country in the world. These chants to me are disgusting and highly offensive and very nationalistic.
I dislike celebrating a war in which millions of Britains were killed and in which it was partially Britain's fault that there was a war - we are as much to blame as the Germans for it in my opinion and most Brits overlook that.
We Brits are still living in the past and are a stagnant nation compared to other nations - we aren't moving forward, we aren't moving back.
I have no problems with German people whatsoever and it is about time others did too.

However, we put an England T-Shirt on my son on Saturday, which we have been doing for weeks, and suddenly it was as though we were the enemies. I have never felt so unsafe and unwelcomed. People made really nasty comments and were so rapped up in their new found German pride, that they had lost that friendly feeling and are now adopting a new found arrogance.
Unfortunately, for those living and working here, there is a darker side to all of this excitement. There are those Germans, who are taking on a new found attitude of supremacy.
So, when the fun is all over at the end of the week, for the remaining Brits, there will be a residual discomfort. Lets hope that someone knocks them out!

While most of the 'north-europeans' apreciate Germany's team-performance, the 'south-europeans' rather ignore the fact and say Germany doesn't deserve the title because of the lack of high skilled individuals.
On the other hand: Isn't that the thrill of an tournament like this: Different systems and approaches competing with each other.

England vs Portugal.
The english were a mediocre team, lets face it. Their only plus point so far is that they managed to hold the reigns with only 10 men on the ground and actually they came close to scoring some goals too. Rooney, Lampard and the others just didnt give that 100%, when it was needed most.
Rooney. The british press made a big deal about Rooney. After watching him, i find it amusing. First of all he is fat, lacks flexibility and then his play is more like "Come near me and i will kill you" attitude, rather than really playing some ball. All that fuss about Ronaldo and such. What Rooney did was wrong. You dont stomp on a players groin. He was sent out and rightly so. Makes me think Rooney is playing the wrong sport on the wrong continent. He might as well cross the pond and play some American Football. Where his antics might sadly go unnoticed. Oh btw, if it came to that, he might not have any balls left when he is stomped on by 330 pound steely muscled American Footballers. No pun intended.
Beckham has proved that he is good for some benders on free kicks. Other than that, he is better off with his pony tail and Big Sunglass wearing wife being mobbed by photographers.
The sad thing about this whole game in germany is, in germany its not about football. Its more about finding their way to express their patriotism, which had been subdued all these years with the baggage of WWII. But, let them not get carried away, else it might end up like the 1936 Olympics in Berlin when Jesse Owens shattered it all.
Go France !!! Zidane you the man !

Germany...why not? But all teams in contest deserve england's respect.
After all, what did your team prove instead? You beat no great team, your play was boring and ugly, and you reach no semi final since...well... 16 years ago...cheating against Camerun.
What about humility? Even english champions league's resultats are mainly due to foreigners...

I agree with most others on this site and would like to see Germany win. As an Englishman living in Holland I have been surprised at how the Dutch and English Ex Pats here have taken Germany as their 2nd team since we were eliminated. A lot of the guys from work, both Dutch and English, went to see some of the games and everybody has said how warm and open the Germans have been to all supporters from all nations.
I would also like to think we could be a bit more honest in defeat and admit that we are no more than a quarter final team. Portugal, or Ronaldo for that matter were not the ones at fault for Rooneys moment of madness. He is a great player who will learn from this experience as did Beckham after '98.
Lets look to the future and hope we move on like other countries - i.e our conquerers from the last 2 tournaments - PORTUGAL !!!!

I still show how proud i am of my country by having portuguese flag on my car, and sad english cant take it, they have to go and ruin people sthings just because they are proud of there culture and where they were born.

Ive never met a friendlier set of supporters, their enthusiasm for the English game, our monarchy and national anthem was suprising to say the least. I couldnt get out of one pub at closing time until i joined the locals in another chorus of Rule Brittania!
I can only hope that when the world cup comes to England we can afford them the same hospitality.

Special Bonding Between Germans and English.
Its funny to see threads proclaiming how germans and english are the same, or how so and so living in germany supported the germans and how a so and so german living in england supported england. Okay great.
Now, i think this is pure BULL. Germans are supporting england, because they know England is out of the tournament. English are supporting the Germans, because they want germany to kick out Portugal. Talk about a convenient arrangment.
Now assume that it came down to Germany and England, i am sure this thread will be filled with heaps of abuses for each other. Who are you guys kidding ?
Someone wrote in the previous thread that just cracked me up..
"Want to get Ronaldo out of the premiership? Then who will teach English players how to play penalties? "
ROTFL !!!

I was glad to see England struggle right through the tournament.
Not once did they look like a winning side, yet qualified from the group stages somehow, probably with a huge matter of luck.
I wish they...and most of the country would stop putting loads of pressure on the players! They have some of the best individual players in the world, and because their country EXPECTS them to win, their bottle crashes and they end up looking like donkeys...again!
The engish need to stop living in the shadows of their '66 counterparts success and focus on playing as a top flight team.
Sure, you won the cup in '66, but other teams have won the cup before and dont go on about it like English commentators, press and most fans.
Just let them play as they are paid to do.
As for the troublesome fans..... Dont get me started on them!!!
They are a joke and a disgrace to the sport they supposedly love, their country, their fellow countrypersons and an embarrasment to the team itself. I'm surprised that they never got kicked out the cup before the end of the group stages.
Hopefully this will be a law that comes into affect for the next World Cup.
Whats England going to do then??

Maybe english enthusiasm for Germany has something to do with them being underdogs; Juergen Klinsmann was trashed as an amateur, Germany has no stars (well, at a pinch Ballack and Lehman) etc. England and Brazil, packed to the gunn'ls with 'world class talent' are gone and Germany's 'journeymen' have a fighting chance to take the trophy.
Reminds me of something Kevin Keegan said many years ago after his move from Liverpool to HSV. Commenting on the relative merits of the two sides he said:
"Hamburg have excellent players and are a good side. Liverpool have good players and are an excellent side."

The Portuguese are strong but the yellow cards they received in the match against the Netherland are too many. Figo and other important players are needed. Their bench is not world class. The Italians have the best substitutes and they want to show football not the scandal. The Germans are united and the keeper question Lehmann Kahn is solved well. Coupet does not want to sit on the bench. Barthez did not make any big mistakes. The keeper conflict can be decisive in the semifinal and final. Buffon is the best keeper left. Luis Felipe Scolari has a lot of expeince on the Portugal side. The Portuguese can reach the final but the final is in Berlin and Germany. Germany can win the final at home. The French or the Portuguese can only win against Italy. Italy can beat Germany 4 to 1. France can repeat the victory like 2000 or the Portuguese will make their 2nd fianl after the defeat against Greece.

I agree with your journalist - I have been to Germany many times on business and have always found them a most hospitable race. They are VERY similar in their traits to us English and I beleive that's where a lot of the 'anti German' feeling stems from. We don't like to admit it, but we too are an arrogant race and there's nothing fundamentally wrong with that - just a shame our arrogance doesn't transpose itself onto the world's playing fileds, because if it did we might win sporting contests! I also believe that there is some kind of conspiracy by FIFA and UEFA, to stop England doing well in major football tournaments; I mean who in their right minds would have given us an Argentinian referee for a QF of the World Cup? We always seem to go out to 'odd' refefreeing decisions - strange that. I bet they were beside themselves when Liverpool won the Euro Champions League title last season!
Sorry, but I have become a tad cynical in my old age!

As a German with a British mother, I'm happy about attitudes towards Germany finally beginning to change over in England.
Perhaps the English media will finally drop those tiresome WWII metaphors and old stereotypes. Good many English have had the opportunity to gain first hand experience of Germany through the world cup and see for themselves that our two nations have quite a bit in common and life isn't too bad over here.
Lets hope England does better in Austria/Switzerland and finally learns to shoot penalties. I thought the English were the more convincing side and were improving on their earlier WC performances. Too bad it was not to be.
I myself am rooting for Germany (obviously) and France. I'd say these are the teams who deserve win the cup (too bad the Spanish and Ivorians had to go home prematurely).

I, too, want to see Germany going all the way. They have outperformed nearly everyone's expectations, and have played a very entertaining style. A Germany-France final would be great!
On the other hand, we could have a Azzuri defensive-minded game, with a bunch of Portugese rolling around on the pitch...wow, now that would be alot of fun to watch...

Aaaah, it is so funny to hear you bigoted, self-righteous comments about how good your teams are and how 'evil' and 'dirty' the Portuguese (yes, Andreas, that is how you spell it) are. Let me remind you that no team has any right to take the high ground on diving. Everybody does it. England has done it, Germany has done it, and Holland gave a masterclass in diving against Portugal. Do I like it? No. I think it is pathetic. But lining up Portugal for such abuse while forgetting your own flaws is even more pathetic.
If you include the qualifying stage, Portugal has scored the most goals out of any European side, (and we didn't play N. Ireland) including a historic win over Russia. We usually play exciting attacking football (remember those games against England and Germany in Euro 2000?) I will admit that we have been very cynical and not very exciting to watch in this World Cup, but that can also be said of England and France, (if you exclude the quarter final game.) This is the WC. It's about winning the bloody thing, not showing off for a couple of games and then going home (e.g. Czech Rep., Argentina, Spain, Ivory Coast)
Now that Deco is back, at least I can hope for some brilliant midfield play and hopefully an entertaining match. Maybe Ronaldo will cry at the end, maybe he won't. Maybe the Portuguese team will lift their game and go all the way much to your disappointment, maybe they'll be knocked out. But hey, at least we are not whining about being 'world-class' and 'deserving' to be in the semis. We work hard, whether the referee calls go our way (Rooney's red card was harsh, yellow at best) or not (Deco was the first guy to get sent off for being on the receiving end of a rugby tackle).
As for my prediction for the winner of the whole thing: Italy. The most complete team, if you consider defensive steel, and attacking talent.

Hi all
I am a German living in Amsterdam, and wanted to add some thoughts: first of all: if you like the atmosphere ate the world cup games, you should visit Germany again in one a Bundesliga game. The atmosphere is in most matsches even better, with stands still being there and the fans being as passionate (I'd recommend derbies: Hanover vs Hamburg, Hanover vs Bremen, Bremen vs Hamburg, Nuremburg vs Bayern, Schalke vs Dortmund or so).
2nd @ 251: That's not true. Many Germans did like the Brits and English and their football mentality before and Liverpool is the 2nd beloved club for many Germans. Ever been to a Die Toten Hosen concert and heard them playing 'you'll never walk alone'?
3rd: I am actually hoping for a Germany vs France final, and wouldn't care whether Germany wins it or not, it would be a great Francogerman party (with a lot of English stuck in as well). Nothing against Italy as a country, but some of you seem to be a bit arrogant plus with that frings incident Italy winning would ruin the whole atmosphere.
I have nothing against Portugal or their people neither, but I have to say that their team isn't build on choir-boys neither. I like the passion the portugese fans have, but them winning would spoil the party, too, in my honest opinion.
That's it so far, cheers, and have fun.

I spent many happy weeks working and travelling in Germany during the 70鈥檚 and 80鈥檚. Since then I have carried out a one-man campaign trying to convince the British what a great people the Germans are and what a wonderful country Germany is.
This was a hard task with the SUN(day Times) owner Rupert Murdoch and his side-kick Jeremy Clarkson continually misleading the British people - slating the Germans because they think this sells more newspapers and books.
We Brits are culturally very similar to the Germans 鈥 possibly closer than to the French and the Italians. As Europeans we鈥檙e culturally a million miles away from the Unelected Eurosceptic Australian Mr. Murdoch鈥檚 adopted USA. I am delighted to hear that an overwhelming majority of our fans had a great time in Germany 鈥 and learned the truth about the Germans.
I think Owen Hargreaves was our best player (FIFA Man of the Match against Portugal) and deserves special praise for his guts and determination. Once again the Media were totally wrong with their opinions on Hargreaves perhaps because he plays in Germany. He proved he has the bottle not only to tame Figo and Ronaldo, to show ability to play any position on the pitch except keeper - and to prove to the Media just how wrong they were.
Although I learned to speak German fairly fluently I am amazed by the number of young Germans who can speak much more fluent English. Even allowing for the fact that English is effectively the international language I know how much hard work is involved in achieving this level of proficiency.
So Good Luck Germany in the World Cup - and before you stop reading the Sun, Mirror or Times why not let them know how wrong they were!

The Germans have put on a fantastic world cup and I'm pleased for the German friends I've got..but I have to take issue with the idea that the Germans have been playing free-flowing football..everybody forgotten the Argentina game? they played with 10 behind the ball and had one chance and scored..fair play to them but it was the Argentinians who were better on the day..but what this world cup has shown is that home advantage and home fans seriously can't be underestimated..yes Germany have played well but i would have been surprised if they hadn't given the fact they were at home and the opposition they've faced has been poor apart from Argentina..i mean this is a Germany side that has failed to beat one of the 'biggies' for 6 years!!?? (excluding the victory over Argentina on penalties) but that's the beauty of the world cup..fans and a few victories can build momentum..if Germany were to play England or Brazil over a series of 10 games i'd be surprised if they won more than 2 or 3..but Germany are still in the World Cup and the latter two aren't

No way, not Germany. I've already gone through much indecision when they played Argentina to pick which country I hated the less, in the end I thought football wise Argentina are more despising than the Germans...But surely I will support anyone but Germany now... Call me crazy but I'll be cheering for a Portugal vs Italy final

I think German people is excellent. They have prepared a wonderfull cup. Good and excellent hosts.
However the playing of German team has not been the best. The way they played argentina is not a good football game. They were desperate, chasing the ball, no good passes, etc. And Klose should have been expelled for taking out argentina Goalkeeper.
I think either Italy or France play better football
After all soccer is an exciting and beautiful game

i will root for a portugal/france finals but france to win.i begin to admire portugal the day they sent england home.England made a mistake from day one when they decide to bring a totally unfit Owen, untested teenage walcot to the world cup to the detriment of Defoe and shaun whrite philip. As if that was not enough they followed the footstep of mourinho by making an overrated lampard an unbenchable player even when he was not doing the job assigned to him.England should learn from thier mistake.

For me as a German, the greatest thing about this brilliant WorldCup is not how well the German team is doing, it's actually the positiv reactions on Germany and the Germans we get from all over the world.
I used to live in England and have travelled to a lot of different countries and very often got confronted with a negative attitude towards us. Its so great to see that the people who came to Germany have changed their mind and actually like it here :)
Winning the final would be fantastic. But knowing that this event has helped to improve the world outlook on Germany is at least as good!

I dunno what it is about England: the players over rate themselves, and the fans hold such hatred for other teams.
For us expats (I live in France) we see the other side. I got some mild ribbing for a few minutes, but as everyone pointed out (not that they needed to) England were crap. They had probably the easiest group and 2nd round, and fell to the first half decent opposition they met.
Portugal didn't even play that well after Rooney, and England should still have beaten them, but it's a bit difficult without strikers who can score.
The knackered old gits of France have done what England should have: picked up their game against Togo and Spain, and beat Brazil for the 3rd time out of four (England have managed one draw out of 4 against Brazil). On that form, provided they don't lose players like Zidane to cards caused by the Portuguese antics, they have to be favourites for the Cup.
Both France and Germany have shown what football is about: work rate, use of space, and fast attacking football using forwards, not midfielders.
Final: France v Germany, France to win. Oh and in 2002 when France went out, the French all got behind England.
Considering Zidane, Gallas and Thuram came out of retirement just to qualify France after some dismal results, it'll also be a fairytale ending if they win. They are now the most fired up team.
Have to agree about the dodgy tactics of Italy and Portugal though, and if there are bad decisions in their favour, we'd have to ask whether the refs are taking backhanders...

to all the people that think argentina was the better team and played the better football. how did argentina score? after a corner kick!! How did germany score??????????????? i think if one team has the better players the other team has to play more clever. also in terms of fair play the german team deserves the win. the whole match the gauchos produce more fouls plus at the end they were bad losers. riquelme might be a superb player but ballack was more passioned and did more for his side.

It was very nice to have you here. Well, Germans are neither angels nor munsters - I guess a few people realized that this summer.
And England will win the next penalty shootout...exepting against Germany ;-).
BTW: So many Germans like you, like England, English films, English music, English football and so on... and we like our little rivalry.
So it's a pity, we didn't meet at the final - it's more boring without the crosses of St. George...See you 2010 in South Africa, when we have to defend our title ;-)

On our balcony hangs the Red Cross on a white background and the German Flag. The missus is German and I am still English (after 25 years living here in the Bavarian Forest) with a Brit passport.
The problems with the Germans in the past were they were to serious, if they didn't win then all was lost. Not one word to say they were runners-up in 2002. God England are still living on the glories from '66.
With the demise of England my heart and support are now fully behind Germany. Not only for their refreshingly open style of football but also how the young have embraced the fan spirit and are not afraid to show their support and pride for Germany. Deservedly in my eyes.

I find your comments regarding the Germans' friendliness and hospitality more than rude and ignorant. How much time have you spent in Germany to come up with such a statement?
The Germans may not be the warmest people initially and won't invite every random stranger round for tea straight away, but once you get to know the individual Germans better, they'll always be there for their mates regardless of their nationality. You should start trying to be a bit more open-minded.

Unfortunately i still see england or at least the majority of people still living in the UK to be behind the rest of europe in their views, tis time to catch up...

I will be cheering on Germany in the final once they beat the ever boring Italy who do not even deserve to be where they are now. France are also playing well and deserve a place against germany in the final. Anyone who says portugal did not cheat against england should be truly ashamed of themselves. Unfortunately this current trend of "diving" and running to the referee to encourage carding is spoiling a truly fantastic world cup. I can only congratulate the Germans on the World Cup so far and hope the referees in the final stages take a dimmer view on the cheating that has gone as yet unpunished.

Clearly the Dutch are our arch rivals, although England cheated on us in 66 (This goal never should have counted). Tomorrow we'll see a 3:1 win for Germany, as we have never lost in Dortmund, although we also nerver won against Italy in a WC, but well. By the way the suspension of Frings is absolutely wrong, considering that the player from Argentina said he wasn't been hit at all.

Two episodes here motivated me to post a comment which is in fact a bit sad:
everyone麓s talking about germany, although this is in fact a west german world cup. Except for leipzig, all the stadiums are/were located in former west germany (counting the Olympia stadium to west Berlin). Also, all the teams except one who chose to reside in Potsdam (very, very close to Berlin) put up their camps in western germany. And now there were two comments in this blog about people experiencing not quite the hospitality as before after putting england shirts on their kids while on fan parties somewhere in eastern germany.
As much as I dislike to say that, but I indeed fear that the hospitality and openmindedness experienced by many might turn into unjustified, seemingly typical german arrogance whereever people feel they have to hold on for something else than their own miserable life. And I am sad to say this will most possibly happen in parts of eastern germany, where there is not much experience with a balanced national pride, combined with economic problems and a noticeable brain drain (due too missing jobs, not because they are dumb by default).
I麓d immediately run around with a foreign nation麓s flag or shirt in Cologne, Hamburg , Berlin or Munich. And I definitely wouldn麓t do this in Rostock, Jena or Chemnitz.
Lets hope I麓m wrong!

Hi all,
I am a German living currently in Frankfurt. It has been amazing to experience this worldcup with so many people from all over the world (I have to say that especially the English have been fantastic supporters - I was with about 50.000 in the Main Arena watching England vs. Paraguay and celebrated with them afterwards).
I am very happy to hear that most of those who came here were so positively surprised by our country and people. In turn, many Germans have had the opportunity to reconsider and get rid of stupid prejudices about some of our guests. It is encouraging that such an event brings us all closer together despite the backward and xenophobic headlines you read in many tabloids (Currently German and Italian "press" is trying to create a lot of unnecessary negative tension before tomorrows game).
Let's hope that we see a fantastic match tomorrow and that we all can celebrate afterwards, no matter who wins (My crystal ball is telling me that it is going to be an easy 2-0 win for Germany...;)).

Hi Mitch,
Unfortunately one has to admit that the openness of the people in the former GDR is in most parts still not comparable to the former West Germany. Of course it depends where you go. I believe this will still take some time to develop and is also linked to the economic situation of the people in the east. The incident you wrote about would not happen in places like Hamburg, Munich or Gelsencroyden (as it was recently renamed). As to a "supreme attitude" - you will always have a couple of idiots left anywhere. But there are many others who make up for it.

Hi there alltogether,
well first thing: seems nice that some prejudices are breakin down now when one really meets some of the "arch-enemies"... but on the other hand: "everything is relative" (as some well-known German once said (that way or in different words)).
about the general "Germans are so nice" thing:
As a lot of guys seem to break down their prejudices about Germany and perhaps also the other way round, there are still a lot prejudices (and some seem to even be strengthened now) about other Europeans. Portugal, Spain, France,... are Europe too. And my personal opinion: Many guys from there are nice ones too.
Of course most germans you might meet at the fan fests are happy and going there to have a big party, so they are friendly, in general (except those small percentage who likes to go to public parties to provoke a fight, which at the world cup fanfests probably get sorted out by the local police). Naturally there might be others that sit at home or in the local pub feeding and breeding their conservative view about the rest of the world. Well in daily life you might meet the friendly guys here or some of the introverted guys... or if you are unlucky even some of the bad guys. I'd say in general the ones that at least have respect to others and are helpfull if help is needed are the average case. Some are delightful friendly, some are a bit nasty. And sometimes you just get one that is by heart a lovely guy, but well on that day he just got fired or ate some old stinkin fish... got no bottle of rum... savvy?!
It's the same as in the UK, nice and less nice people there, too. However in general you can see if someone wants not to conversate or give you a friendly hug and so on, so with some feeling for characters you can make good friendships in Germany as well as in the UK or France...
Don't get me wrong, I am happy that some prejudices about Germans are falling down and the world gets the feeling Germans are friendly people, which in general surely is the case (with some relativity *g*).
About the racism: Yeah there is some racism in Germany, sadly. However there is racism in France and the UK too. It's a worldwide problem, with different ...well...symptoms. In Germany it seems to be specially in the east (the DDR-part) a problem to be concerned about. However I think the average German is quite openminded about foreign nations and in general against every kind of racism due to the things Germans "learned" by WWII (and i mean not the fact that Germany lost a war, but how racism mixed with nationalism can produce the evilest things). Therefore in general the government and the judicial system is quite strict with anything involving racism. And by the way, that's why Nazi-symbols are banned, and not because Germans fear jokes about the lost war.
Back to the sport:
Some mentioned Germany has no good single players. Well, one might mention Ballack or Lahm or Klose, which is the TopScorer right now in this worldcup. Not the glamourous Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Henry, Tevez or Crespo,... but Klose. And he also was competing with Ronaldo last worldcup.
And even if you insist that Germany had no good single players: As some already said the teamplay counts to win a game. So, if Germany has no overwhelming single players, well that means their teamplay made the quarter-final possible. Even better then! ;)
So by the way, you may have already guessed, I am German, I regularly don't care much for football and although I would appreciate if Germany wins, I also respect the other teams (all of them). Some TEAMS (not countries or people) are more sympathic, some less. Some play more delightful football, some less, but all of them have managed to get through the qualifying and the remaining 4 managed to come to the quarter-finals. That's something my local football club would never be able to achieve (even if Germany would allow its town to seperate itself... ;) ).
About the countries/people I partially don't have any particular opinion (as i don't have enough data to build an opinion on), but a lot of the fans one can meet here in Germany are just here to enjoy the show and so most of them are quite friendly :-) ... and perhaps that way I might get at least some opinion of their country/people. ;)
Enough brabbeled, let'ss hav sum rum, an' especially lot'a fun an makin frendly frendss, savvy?!
Ahoi and greetings from my little independent isle surrounded by german ground.

speaking as a united fan, i will be very sad to see ronaldo go, if he does...
i think england played pathetically in the first half until they realised that they were actually playing to win, however it was too late as the portugese had a strong foothold in the game, even if they didn't get a goal, they certainly had a lot more possesion at the end of the game.
i think rooney's challenge was provoked, but unnecessary. Yes, he was fouled before he himself fouled, but that is no excuse to attack someone's groin. i agree with a statement made before that stated that ronaldo was being immature and a bit pathetic to get rooney sent off, however, when it came to taking a penalty - there is a reason we lose to portugal when it comes to penalties as ronaldo is a stunning penalty taker. he plays the game with class and flaunts his amazing skills with his stepovers and dummies, but makes stupid mistakes such as trying to get players sent off. i believe this will go with time, as i think he's still quite immature and is playing schoolboy football where it is acceptable to protest against referees descisions. he must understand how to play football with more grace and then i believe, he will be a truly amazing player. and i think that fellow england fans should stop blaming the oppostion for our constant poor performances, our lack of determination and our obvious potential that is ignored by the players themselves.
do not put christiano ronaldo to blame, blame our so-called amazing 'worlds best' Lampard who played soo poorly I questioned his postition in the squad at all
gerrard was unlucky and i know he can do better, i hope to see him in 2 years making a real difference for the english game abroad when we play for the european cup
also, i think joe cole is utterly fantastic - him being the english christiano ronaldo really if you think of it...what with the skill, speed, passion and of course...diving

Being german and studying in Cologne first of all I want to express my joy that so many of you guys had a good time here in Germany.
I have read a couple of the blogs here and the comments, and when I read your stories I got some tears in my eyes and yes, I will vote for UK in ESC next year :P Small joke...
I really loved the atmosphere here in town, at the parties, everywhere, and I have to say that I already get sad about when the WM is over and everyone leaves again. :(
And about us being friendly or not:
I can't talk about "the" Germans, just my friends, and we (me and my family and friends) have always been happy to talk to people from abroad!
I think many of the people here are welcoming in general, and the spirit has even grown during the WM I suppose, also among germans... suddenly the friendly ones are even more friendly, I think cos we are very happy, not because of the team in first place, but about the people from all over the world being here and having fun and so on...
and this continues in smiles everywhere. WM is a bit different to normally, but even in a normal situation in Germany your prejudices would have gone.
I think I am not the only one who thinks like that.
Ravi and some of the others....
of course there are some rude people around. Most of them are rude to anyone.
I had people being very rude to me as well, that's an experience we all get, no matter if we are germans or not. It can happen in the Supermarket, at the post office, whatever... this is not Disneyland after all. People here are honest with their feelings. If they are rude, they mean it, and that's better than fake friendliness I'd say.
But those people are not the standard!
And some people might be more or less open minded, yeah.
But I think I can say that the majority would not agree on such behaviour.
And for everyone searching for a reason to come to Germany again:
Come to Oktoberfest (beginning in september)! You will get some of the funny and nice stereotypes there and many people from all over the world as well, it's great. Last year I have been there for my first time, and we sat at one table with americans and russians.. great experiences :)
And for football:
I really would like France to win.
Why? Because Germany has already won. We have won our pride and happiness back. Like some people put it: Don't forget things, but let's move on. It's a new country, now after the WM even more I think. We have won the support of the many foreigners and immigrants living here, showing the german colours for the first time.
To me the german colours got a new meaning, as being a symbol for having things in common instead of excluding people. I never experienced people from my country to stand together like this in these weeks.
We have won to give fun and good memories to many people from all the world.
So, a final Germany - France would be my wish.
France has won in 98, but still... I think it's the best and nicest team there! Allez les bleus! And okay.... Schlaaaaaand is okay for me as well :)
See you at Oktoberfest ;)

Germany has been great for a good few years. It is a lesson in how to build a great nation the right way. In Berlin there is a massive sign above the reichstag that says Government is the servant of the people not the people as servants of the government. That lesson is as true today as many years ago when a passive country allowed a bunch of evil people to ruin their reputation Thankfully for mankind their reputation is being rapidly restored. I know my humble grandparents had to get out in a bit of a hurry in early 1939 but it hasnt stopped me enjoying germany several times in the last decade.

Thanks for the mostly positive comments about my home country Germany. I think it is time to realize that people all over Europe, no all over the World, are MOSTLY nice and often quite similar. People want to enjoy themselves and have a good life. Anywhere. You will find some exceptions in every country and you will find a lot of cultural differences. That's it.
Still, it's just nice to see that England see us as arch rivals (we do the same with the Dutch team) and that people support their team and strongly dislike some others. This is all part of "the beautiful game". So, realizing that French, Italian and Portuguese people are just as passionate about their team as we are about ours, I still hope that we will beat the Italians big time and show them that you don't beat a German team twice within 12 months. Btw: I can already smell that Gattuso will be sent off. He always deserves that anyway.
@Ravi R: I have read all the posts. Of course, you have the freedom to criticise whatever you want. But it is absolutely clear that you have a problem with Germany in general (criticising 8 different things in 8 different posts). So, just be honest and say what you mean instead of creating new things all the time.

as a german who's been around the world, i'd like to say that i have been delighted but also felt digusted in almost every part of this planet. i have experienced racism in germany, in the US, in britain, australia, africa and asia. fear of the unknown, or better: fear of all things different is a common trait amongst humans, wherever they live.
i reckon one's chances of a good time as much as having your teeth kicked in are the same in berlin or stuttgart as they are in manchester, london, cape town, sydney or buenos aires.
i agree with most british football fans: diving and "cheap play" seem to be a non-british phenomenon. rooney with all his short fuses has, in my memory, never tried to cheat for a penalty or getting an opponent booked. so i can understand the frustration by the english fans. had rooney simply gone down prior to his attack on ricardo carvalho's crown jewels, england would have had a free kick, situation cleared. does that rid roonaldo's deed? no, but it goes to prove that FIFA or UEFA or whatever the backoffice pencil-pushers call themselves are doing nothing to support fair play, despite all their fancy image campaigns.
this sets the tone for my final comment, on the scenes after germany's win over argentina. the question about wether the better team has won is irrelevant - the better team is the one with more goals than the other. that's it. "we didn't get this penalty, the ref did this and that" - christ, you have 90 or maybe 120 minutes to score a goal. you don't win or lose a game in a few seconds, it's decided over the entire time.
argentina: if you can't lose, you shouldn't be allowed to win either.

Jogo bonito is great to watch, but doesn't win trophies. Scolari knows all about that. So do the Greeks.
Portugal can play beautiful football, and now they can play to win. Let them win. I'm sure there'll be another time in the future, when another coach will restore the beautiful game (and lack of results that goes with it) and everyone will love them again.

Some fans are like bad animals and doing the things on floors. Other fans do the clearing. You can not stamp on every animal because one is bad. A bad man doesn't mean all men are bad.
Wayne Rodney did the kickings and stampings like a sick goat with ill udder, but will be back. England had nobodies to score. Crotch would break leg like dry sticky if he kicked the ball. Hopings that the Jermans win , good to see home nation do well.

COME ON GERMANY!!!
Will reserve comment on France and Italy till I have seen the semis but I was screaming for portugal and disgusted at the way they were treated in the Holland game - I expected so much more in skill and behavour from both teams, don't even mention that ref - I think he should have gone to specsavers. I doubt I will shout for Portugal again unless they start playing real football again.
England were not good at all during this world cup (save a couple of players - Owen Hargreaves take a bow)and I still can't decide if Rooney meant to tread on that guy but I don't think 2 man tackles have a place in the game, there's no skill in it.
Sven should have at least given Theo the boy wonder a run out (he's the boy wonder cos were all still wondering if he's any good)and as for this lone striker malarkey, what the ...
I want to watch football and see the best team win the World Cup,and whoever it is, winning the world cup by diving, play acting or any other form of cheating just makes a hollow and worthless victory no matter if no one remembers it in 50 years time!
Great to see pictures of German fans waving their national flag, too many times I've heard that national pride is a bad thing (apparently the St George flag is racist to some people) it's time we reclaimed our symbols from the racists so that they lose the power they hold.
So come on France, stuff Portugal so we can see Zidane in the final but I want Germany to Win (again it feels so strange).

Jeezz, what an amazing blog to read. Because...in fact it's actually not that much about football itself but the bridges we slowly but consistently start to build in Europe. Sounds pathetic? Fair enough.
I am German living abroad for 10 years. I left disliking Germany (very typical for Germans), thinking everywhere else it only can be better (our thorough education at work). Lesson learnt: I started to appreciate my home country; not more, not less. No idealism, just realism. Got confronted with loads of prejudices, particularly by the English and the Dutch. Learnt to defend myself - as a person, not a passport holder. I should add that most of them never had set foot into Germany...although I must admit, having done so in the 80ies probably would not have changed their mind ;-)
Always was a fanatic football fan - and I mean: good football. Therefore I didn't exactly get the chance to support the German team for the last 10-15 years. Until now. Technically brilliant? Nope. But something new: joyful! That's why I was glad England or Brazil went out. Because of the English? No way, I used to love watching them (and supporting them!). But they simply weren't a team, only excellent individual players...in their clubs. Brazil - phew, seems they were bored of being the champion forever. My big thanks goes to France. Zidane forever!
I have been reading the dreadful threats on 成人快手606 about Germany and therefore even less can believe what I see here. Again, the way Germany plays is not perfect football but it's fun to look at as it's humble yet confident and dedicated team players performing "decent" football. The four teams being left all deserved being there due to different qualities, no matter how much I wished Argentine still would be in (ehh, together with Germany ;-)
Who should win? Hmm, don't have an arch rival myself. Certainly would love to see Germany make it to keep up the enthusiasm. I loved the French team and adore superb Zizou. Germany/France would be a great final, no matter the result. I agree with some of the posts here: seeing Zidane lifting the Cup would be more than deserved. Don't get me wrong though..I'd be at least as happy seeing it being lifted by Ballack :-))
And to all those English out there: glad some of you changed your mind about "the Germans". We're not all as bad as the media tells you. Would love to see you in post-Eriksson times in a final with Germany...good chances for you in case you avoid penalties. See ya in Austria/Switzerland!
No matter who wins, we can celebrate some prejudices having vanished. Sounds like a truly fantastic World Cup to me.
Oh, and all those people who get upset about cheating or bad ref's: DAMN, get over it! We'll never find out whether Rooney "consciously stumbled" or simply has some balancing problems (impossible with the help of funny gymnastics Klinsmann lets the Germans perform ;-)))

This is all very well - the Germans are very likeable, brilliant organisation and hospitality, country really getting behind the team etc, etc - but aren't you forgetting that Italy is actually a much better footballing side, more tactically astute, and at least as persistent and resilient?
Just for these reasons, I hope and expect that the Italians will actually win and I find it more than a little disturbing that many contributors here seem to have made up their minds already that if Italy win it will be the result of cheating and all-round deviousness.
Why is that? Italians too dark and swarthy for some folks' liking?

Culture reigns around here ! How could it, if the first ignorants are the journalists? PORTUGUESE ( NOT PORTUGESE) are not Iberians, are Lusitanians; Portugal is not Spain and it is not in Africa or Central America; Portugal is one of the oldest nations in the world, in fact we have the oldest frontier line in the world; in the 15 th century when you lot were still living in the dark ages, our country went everywhere around the world; in the 16 th century our language was spoken everywhere in Asia, SO:
- who do you think you are?
- do you think we fear anyone?
- do you think that you have the right to insult us in every possible way?
NO, no, no,no!
We will never surrender. We are in the 4 best teams because we deserve it, no one helped us. If you are so good, go ahead and score. The Dutch didn't do it, not even by paying a visit before the game to the referree's cabin; the English didn't do it, not even when they crucified us in the press, neither will the French who don't even know who Scolari is;
We know what is your problem: you had everything worked out, the final four previous champions only, the final between Germany and Brazil. Well, we are so unworthy, such rotten slaves, such sardine eaters from the lost corner of Europe that you will have no problem in getting France to score at least 10 goals and send us packing. Pressure is on their side. We are just here by mistake, so why are you so nervous, especially the English? Is it because you cannot win a title for 40 years? Yes, you should be because then in 66 you robbed us and you have a curse over you, a Lusitanian curse that never fails: just look what is happening to Greece because of the Euro 2004. So who is next? Yes, here is something to remember us by: we are the land of Our Lady of Fatima and she performs miracles . You can't beat that !

Have to agree and say that i hope that Germany win the world cup due to the attacking nature of their play and the fact that they have put on a fantastic tournament. They have welcommed England especially well and it would be a disaster for football if Portugal won - they are simply a poor team. This does of course say little about England but i do believe that if Rooney had not been sent off we would have won. As a Man Utd fan, i cannot be as forgiving to Ronaldo as Rooney can and we should offload him as soon as possible ( not to Real Madrid as he wants though ). If Germany do not win though, it would also be great to see Zidane succeed with France as he is truly a legend. Anyone but Portugal in the end.

Hi! Thank you very much for your support, but I'd rather not like to have it, because I think it brings the german team bad luck ;-) (no, just kidding!)
Don't expect to much from the German team, because we never defeated Italy in WC games...but who knows what is possible here and now with that absolutly fantastic atmosphere in Dortmund...gosh I wished I had a ticket for the match against Poland...I wish I'd have a ticket for the next match.
I hope the spirit of this WC will last very long!
Because as a famous cabret artist said at the beginning of the WC "I feel like I am not in my country anymore, all the people are nice and are celebrating...that means the government can do all the changes they want, raise the taxes, etc without being noticed...when the WC is over and when all the fans left we wake up with an hangover...then the weather will become bad again. So at the latest in November we should feel at home again" ;-)
Of course it is meant to be a joke...And I hope it will turn out to be one!
I hope in 2008/2010 we will have FanFests as well with the same atmosphere. Well maybe not that big as they are now. I am sure the English will be welcome...if you anounce your coming (when arriving in 10000+)...because, you know, being typical german stereotype we then want to make sure there is enough space and big screens for all. But I am sure, if the English fans gather enough support and organize themselves they will be able put some pressure on their authorities or the government or on whoever has the TV rights (don't know the situation in England) to set up their own "FanFests". Would love to attend to an English FanFest!

Post 198:
"the penalty against Australia was dubious but the Aussie defender was stupid to tackle that way at the end of injury time. This is the basic difference between football teams with international experience and teams without it..."
Well it's not just Aussies who think it was a joke of a penalty. Everyone from Argentina to Alaska (pretty much the whole world except Italy) thinks the decision was apalling. I agree the red card was harsh too, but that doesn't excuse the penalty. And it certainly doesn't excuse diving and cheating.
As for the defender having no experience, well the guy you are refering to is Lucas Neill, who has played for Blackburn Rovers in the English Premier league since 2001. They finished 6th in the Premier league just 4 points behind Arsenal. So he's no bunny, he's been around the big boys for a long time. But Italy take diving to a whole new level.
If you watch the replay, he made no physical contact. The Italian had changed direction and could have easily gone inside and over Neill, but he chose to dive. No hang on, let's stop hiding it for what it is - he chose to cheat. Unfortunately the ref bought it and a great world cup game was ruined. I was watching in a bar, and everyone - even non-Aussies - were shaking their heads in disbelief and embarassment for the game.
But I actually blame FIFA more than Italy, because all teams do it. All teams dive. It's up to FIFA to start reviewing video and suspending the divers. Until then the game will remain a disgrace, with grown men rolling around in agony like little schoolgirls, and teams cheating their way to the final. Wow what a great image it's sending to our kids!
Yes you're right to a degree though - Australia is very naive in terms of international football. But if that means they haven't learned that you have to cheat and dive to win games, then good for them! They leave the world cup early, but can hold their head high.
I would be completely embarrassed and ashamed to win from such a blatent dive. Shame FIFA shame....

At this time there's 25% chances for each team to be WC winner. All the games start 0-0 , and past victories or defeats don't count. At this stage it's not important how you got here, but that you are 90 minutes away from a WC final. If Zidane has a bad day , if Klose doesn't scores , if Ronaldo is sent off, if Buffon doesn't stops a easy shot, their opponents will certainly take advantage off that . Believe me there are 4 favourites, France ,Germany, Italy and Portugal. None of this teams will be easily defeated. If someone expects an easy way to the title , better be ready for a big disappointment. Because in football what seems to be an absolute truth today, can turn out to be a lie tomorrow. Next Wednesday night we鈥檒l all have a better idea of who can be the next World Champions. I bet on a surprise鈥.
I wish 3 teams good luck...

Who do I want to win the final? The best footballing team that's who, and on the form so far that's between Germany and France. As long as it's a good, clean, attacking football match, I'll be happy and football will win.

Welsh Cox,
it is very politically correct to say what you said, we know, we are used to it. Go ahead and get the Nobel Prize. BUT as for those people in Asia, America and Africa ( don't forget poor Africa it will hurt your politically correct posture) they seem to think otherwise about us and that is why we are so pride of our so-called colonial history: they support us, the large majority support us in Portuguese speaking countries ( like Brazil) and in many other countries that speak other languages. Look what happened in East Timor: everybody was puzzled why they liked the Portuguese so much. Oh yes, we are used to be misunderstood by the so called first world ( and the World Cup campaign against us is a proof of that) but we are loved by the so called third world. The New york Tiomes said we are the Patron of the little people and those are the majority all around the world. Well, you can't beat that !
As for Our Lady or the Witches and Wizards, curses and blessings, if you don't believe it cannot hurt you, or can it?
Instead of slendering the Portuguese you should take a long look at yourselves first. Shame on you !

The same goes for the Portuguese and I'm sure many other nationalities residing in the UK and rightfully participating in the exchange of thoughts, ideas, opinions etc. on english-speaking sites. Nobody stops you from visiting other foreign sites voicing your opinion, provided you know to speak the language. You don't? Awww, shame. See, there's the difference.

Which reminds me of another bit of injustice dating back to 1982 that awaits righting: the Germany-Austria conspiracy match in round 1 -- the last game for both for the round -- in which the two teams agreed to have Germany win by 1:0 and play the rest of the match without a single attack on the other, the exact and only score that would guarantee that both teams qualify at the expense of.... ALGERIA. (Algeria had shocked Germany by defeating them 2-1 in their opening game....)
And what is Zidane's ancestral homeland? Algeria!

In reply to Ravi R:
Hi, I have read your reasons on why Germany does not deserve to win the cup and I would like to react on that.
First off all, the team who wins a cup or a champaioship deserves it. At least that is common sense here in Germany. E.G. I thaught Greece deserved to win the last EC, because they made the best out of their possibilities and they played as a team, although their style was destructive, but they just did what they could and were succesful. If other teams were unable (to stupid to be honest and to tell the truth) to score against Greece, the Greek team is not to blame for that. Hence they diserved winning with all the effort they put into it.
Second, the fact that Germany had always three man against Tevez has nothing to do with man marking. Sorry, I just started laughing while I read this. That alone tells me you have no real idea of football (or tactics), and I think all who played for a team on a higher level would agree on that. In case you played I would love to hear where and have a word with the man who introduced you to football. Man marking a player is something the Greeks had done in 2004! Man Marking means you have a player that follows a special player everywhere! I never saw Friedrich (right wing back) in central or even left defense when Tevez was there once in a while. Tevez always had 2 or 3 players around him, because we knew he can outwit one for sure. And Ballack and Frings were at Riquelme because Riquelme played in central midfield and Ballack and Frings do. So it is quite natural they meet. I remember very well the 1994 WC Brazil-Italy. You know the Italians are famous for their defense, but for sure not for man marking. Each time Romario got the ball he found himself surrounded by 4(!) Italian players if it was possible. It was a natural thing for them to do, because they had so much respect for Romario.
So this argument of yours is quite silly in my opionion. To me it is like blaming a cloud for blocking the sun. I don't like it but it is a necessary thing sometimes.
Third, I like to watch Podolski, O.K. he has not performed that well so far, but even Ronalinho says he is a player which he likes to watch. And he said this when Podolski was in the second division with Cologne 2 years ago! Then I like to see Lahm (left wing back) tell me a better player on that positin in this tournament. I like his tempo dibblings. I agree there players who can do it better, but still he is nice to watch. Schweinsteiger and Schneider are also nice to watch from time to times. Not to mention Ballack or Klose.
Fourth, I agree that Pekerman made 2 wrong decisions in taking Riquelme off the pitch and not bringing Messi, which would have turned out to be very messy for Germany (sorry for the pun....just had to take that opportunity). But is Germany to blame for that and is that an argument against them??? It was Argentinas fault. Point. And saying that Klose did hurt the Argentinian goalie on purpuse is absolutly redicules. Klose knew he made a mistake and he wanted to score. BTW no Argentinian player complained about Klose and Klose hurt himself too, that is why he was taken off the pitch. And Klose is one of the most fair players. Once in a league match the refere thought Klose was fouled in the box when his team was 0:1 behind in an away match. The ref already pointed to the spot, but Klose said it wasn't a foul, so no penalty was awarded for his team (btw dear english fans, do you have an example in the premier league like that?). So saying that Germany wanted to go for Penalty shoot out and Klose was injuring the goalie on purpose is ridiculess! And let me tell you: GERMANS NEVER GO FOR PENALTIES ON PURPOSE! Because we know it is a lottery in some way and we'd rather like to take the chances during 90 or 120 mins! (Maybe that is one reason why we have so many)
Fifth, the fact the German team looked desperates is that Atgentina did not give them too many chances. As Germany did to Argentina because both sides had a lot of respect for the other sides offensice qualities! I agree in the first 30 mines of the match Argentina had 63% possesion, but I havn't seen a chance for Argentina in that phase! As you can see in the statistics the ball possesion over th 90 or 120, respectivly, were balanced (according to eurosport.com - sorry bbc :-) the possesion after 120 was 51:49 in favour of Germany! See for yourself please
Sixth, man marking was not on the game plan (and they have not done it). Man marking means that people follow other people everywhere! Nowadys the teams cover the areas. That means dear Mr. Expert, that you mark the man that comes in your area! So if Tevez was always on the left wing it was Friedrichs duty to mark him there. That has nothing to do with classical man marking! When coaches speak about man marking they mean classical man marking. In football you cannot compete without man marking, even the south americans! (Brazil had experienced that againt France!) If the they played long balls the was that they had no choice. They tried to do it the nice way, but even Argentina played long balls. So this point of you is rather silly. See the link to the statisitc: long balls: Germany 49, Argentins 53. Any words??
Seventh, The offensive part and the defensive part off the statistic shows to me that Germany obviously did more for the game to win, that is why I would say they had deserved it a little more to advance. When Pekerman put in Cambiasso he went to the destructive style you seem to dislike my good sir! I agree the fact the Argentina had slightly more useful balls and one more shot on the target than Germany indicates that they may have been the more skilled (not the better) team, but the other facts speak against Argentina in my opinion.
Eigth, as someone else said. football ain't ballet like you'd like to have it! That is football we are talking about.
If you don't like it, don't watch it. So I was trying to argue against your points, backing with some facts.
So if Argentina would have won the penalty shoot out they would have deserved it as well in my opinion. This time our team has done it. And not using the home advantage would be rather stupid. Look at South Korea in 2002. Even England used it in Euro 96 (unsucessful, in 1966 succesful. Then Argentina in 1978, Italy in 1934, they bought the title ther, just read reports of old games then. You be surprised what had happend there!!!!!
So next time buy a good book about football, start reading and most important try to understand the game!

Aussies,
defending 101 :
Lesson 1
if a player from the opposing team is attacking, and has made his way into your penalty box, do not fall over in his path to goal, as this will look like you are trying to impeed him.....
if said player should fall over you, expect a penalty....
next time, just hand opposing team written invitation for a free penalty, in the last minute of the game just to spice it up & add controversy!
boo hoo, they cheated!
maybe if Lucas Niell stayed on his two feet and not hit the deck "before" Grosso did, it would of not been a penalty. Aussieroos had their chance to beat the Italians, but they couldn't do it, Italy had a man unfairly sent off, Aussies still couldn't penetrate defenses!, what were the man down italians doing all the way down in australias goalmouth! they should off been in their own goalmouth defending like stirred up meat ants! Aussieroos, you lost that game!
Germany will show you skippies how to smash the italian defenses, even though they beat us 4 - 1 a few weeks ago, we will rise from the ashes and throw them back in their eyes! thus blinding them, and then we will dominate france and choke the french cock!, providing we beat the italians, and all the dodgy 50 - 50 decisions go our way, and maybe if we have some decent oranges at half time, the last lot we got were sour, i suspect the french tampered with them....

It was a shame that the English team didn't get through the next round as they were playing with passion and showed the will to win.
Like the majority of the English fans I could never have imagined I would be cheering for the Germans as well. Credits were credits due, the German squad improved and showed they manage the attacking game. Hope they will send the portugese 'National Theatre Company' back home. That team knows nothing about sportivity and if the competitor is clearly better they chicken out and have to resort to sly tricks and game delaying. (against the Dutch; have anyone actually noticed the Dutch were very calm in the first half even after the portugese goal? With 65% ball posession they were controlling the match, things only changed in the 2nd half when the portugese went delaying the game and provoked the Dutch to use the same tricks as they. This also happened against the English, although in a lesser extent 'coz the ref had control over the match)
So, go Germany, winnen sollen sie!

Italy's only fair chance at beating Australia, without their consistent cheating, would have been in the inevitable penalty shoot-out that was *just* saved by a fortuitous combination of over-acting and poor reffing. As most Aussie sporting talent is locked up in cricket, rugby, local football and field athletics, our country could only garner a mixed bag consisting of the best available local bits and some imported parts - a bit like an English sports car. But what a good job they did all the same.
As for the French Foreign Legion masquerading as a football team, let's face it.. they're not the most beautiful-looking men in the world, are they? Where's a hungry Labrador when you need it? To be fair tho', none of those boys will be sleeping alone after kicking the jewels out of the pants of some wannabe Amazonian demigods. Coming to Marius,
I guess my posting came out very negative. I am not going to argue with you here. Probably i need to post video's from the match to justify my views, but then i dont want to go that far. Let me make it clear, Germany is a good team, hard working, focussed and very positive. But i saw some great gameplay from the argentinian team. And thats what draws me and not the victory. I will not accept the fact that football players have to become modern day "Gladiators" to appease the crowd. The person who can control the ball and make split second passes, wins praises in my book. Someone who is intent on bull heading their way to the CUP. Kudos !! Congratulations in Winning the CUP. But guess what ? I will always look forward to the team that has talented players than the ones that have the Damn CUP !
Talking about talented players, Brazil was such a letdown. I think the players had absolutely no motivation to win. Their mentality was more like " Lets get this thing over with and get home" The press has it that, the players had personal problems among themselves and Perierra(??) wasnt good at solving problems like that.
Btw Marius, thanks for your over righteous advice on football.

I commented before but it didn't get printed for some reason!! I am a Candian watching the world cup from Western Canada. I say that the Portugese are babies, they whined, dived and play acted the whole way through the England v Portugal game last Saturday, Ronaldos peformance agains Rooney was disgusting, he should have been the one red-carded for interfering with the Ref. The Portugese are poor sports and don't deserve to win the cup. The Italians are no better!! I am neutral, I am Canadian who loves Ice Hockey where men are men not wimps and whiners!!

Come on Italy. After years of hurt through penalty shoot-outs and shocking refereeing decisions, we needed a bit of luck.
We've played well throughout the tournament and don't deserve to be labelled as 'cheats', 'boring' or 'we've bought the ref' as we have been in some parts of the British media.
The scandal in Italy is working in our favour taking the spotlight and pressure off the team. I hope the lads can lift the trophy in Berlin on Sunday!

Watched the Germany v Argentina QF in the Olympiastadion and Argentina blew it big time. Their passing and skill was superb but they wasted time and defended their lead rather than go on the attack and score more goals. Germany have little skill and invention. Their fans had their heads in their hands for most of that match, because they were so bad. They have Ballack and a bunch of very average players and shouldn't be good enough to beat Italy but then they made the final in 2002 and were a poor team then. Question is, how do they maximise what they've got every time a tournament comes around, when England fail miserably with far better players?

being a pom living in oz its hard to explain to the locals why the poofball players dive and roll around like wimps at the slightest touch. I have played the game for many years and yet to see it happen at a local game. It is an art in itself so credit must be due to the players that do it, the people to blame are FIFA they need to hammer the players based on video evidence after the game. They have managed to stem the shirt pulling to an extent so they could nail this one if they wanted to. Obviously they cant change the result but atleast ban the buggers. Hope Germany win against France as Henry has hit the deck twice now holding his face with the only contact being to his chest area. Glad to see the back of Sven "grey"svorenson

It is amazing how the quality of the comments deteriorates from post 1 to post 383...
In post 379. one can read "As for the French Foreign Legion masquerading as a football team, let's face it.. they're not the most beautiful-looking men in the world, are they? Where's a hungry Labrador when you need it?"
Why is such a blatant discriminatory statement doing in this blog? What does the looks of the french team have to do with football?
As for post 381. - can't the 成人快手 spare us the self-destructive gambler, and the obvious threat posted in post nr. 383.?

The country and its people are brill and I will come back, no doubt.

England falling in love with Germany and vice versa????... As a Belgian I don't know if I have to be happy or start feeling uneasy about getting squeezed between two giant lovers.
Concerning football... Germany did a great job so far and hopefully continues to do so tonight and in the final. It's a pity that England is out but the same can be said about Argentina and Brazil. That's football...

As a foreigner living in Germany its great to see the rest of Europe finally being less narrowminded and prejudiced against the Germans. I sooooo want the France - Germany final but I think Italy will beat Germany - just as they did in February.
:(
Come to think of it, Portugal might beat France too if France has a bad day.

Just got back from Germany and have totally changed my opinion of the nation completely.
I went there under the impression that most English have (that you hate Germans) but it couldn't have been more different. The people are so friendly and helpful and it has a much better general atmosphere than England.
It is also a beautiful country and I really do hope they win the cup now (just to see Klinsmanns reaction if anything else). If only England would have had a manager with half as much passion??????

You guys have got to be kidding! I cannot believe the Germans are blaming the Italians for Frings being suspended from today's game! Whoever spotted Frings' actions, only spotted what actually happened, Frings hit another player and should be punished for it. It amazes me that people are having a go at the Italians for spotting it and how they would be more than happy for him to get away with it. If it was an Italian or anyone else for that matter, I'm sure the Germans along with everyone else would want to see that player punished. Frings and the German team need to face the consequences of their actions rather than pushing the blame onto somebody else. I think the Germans have played really well this tournament and after the friendly against Italy, have really surprised everyone. I really hope tonight's match will be a good and entertaining one, I am however supporting Italy and feel they have been treated harshly by the press etc. throughout the tournament. We haven't cheated our way to the semi final, we had ONE dubious penalty given to us, and althoguh it was a decisive decision, Australia never looked that dangerous and should have capitalised on the very harsh red card we were given at the beginning of the 2nd half. That's football, bad decision's are made all the time,(we should know, WC 2002), we got over it and moved on. I think Italy have shown another side to their game, we generally haven't settled for a 1-0 result, we have gone out and scored goals (9 goals + 1 OG) from all over the pitch and in theory, not conceded a goal to our opponents. I don't think we have been playing defensively at all, especially in comparison to the past anyway. Give us a break!

I could easily see germany win it, but I honestly think portugal has played equally well throughout the competition. England has been terrible boring to watch right from the start. England midfield and strikerforce never showed the quality to be a contender. Lampard, beckham, gerrard was rubbish. but look at their names and compare them with germays and italy? Thats right, england is based on "names", created by the english media. England havent got a team. No need for english arrogance, or to themselves as anywhere near the top. Forget your "names" and start over.

Now I have been living in a very nice part of the UK (sort of) for the last 6 years. I have to admit after the Munich 5:1, the booing of English fans at our national anthem, the very bad press about the German team in 2002 I hated the english team with a vengeance.
When they dropped out on penalties last week, for the first time ever I felt bad for them and felt they have not deserved that. Don't get wrong I believe Rooney deserved to be sent off.
I also been home in the last couple of weeks and the athmosphere is absolutely electric and in a brillant sort of way.
I obviously want Germany to win its fourth star but moreso I AM DAMN PROUD HOW MY COUNTRY HAS PRESENTED ITSELF TO THE WORLD.The biggest achievement in my books are the comments from english fans as above, saying we are not that bad. Thank you for that.

It is really heartwarming to read this blog entry and especially the comments.
There has always be a healthy competition between Germany and England which turned too bitter because of the tabloids in both countries. It is great to see that they are not the ones leading the opinions this time around.
Having grown up in a very anglophile area I always felt close to England and i always enjoyed the fighting spirit of the English team. It is a real shame that you lost your best game of this World Cup.
I had tickets to England - Sweden and would have loved to see the game but when I went to the stadium in Cologne I decided to sell my two tickets to a couple from Manchester. I felt they would just enjoy the game even more and it was great to see how excited they were once I gave them the tickets. I think they were not expecting to be able to afford tickets and actualy see the game.
Shame that the only other game I had tickets to was Ukraine - Switzerland though. ;)
Anyway, I hope for a Germany vs. France final and cannot wait to see England again in two years. I hope you will have a coach again that reinvigorates the English fighting spirit!

Dear Keith,
So sorry to read that some german idiots are still living in our wonderful country. I want to say sorry in the name of all the real football-supporters in Germany who wants to celebrate the WC in a peaceful way with friends from the whole world. And i guess that the most of us do it - i hope (and think) that it is not typical for this WC and for the german to act in this way you was treated...
I - what a surprise - want Germany to win the world-Cup - but most of all i wanted Germany presented as a place where foreign supporters may have a lot of fun and are able to celebrate a big party with each other. And i think - all in all - it was (and still is) an enourmous success.
So maybe you (and some other) will visit Germany again - but then don't forget to visit hamburg - the most beautiful city in germany - and the most english-coined city in Germany...
Greetings from the "Waterkant", Frank

Deutschland 眉ber alles is NO nazi lyrics. It was written by Hoffmann von Fallersleben in 1841 at a time there was no unified Germany but just all those different Germann pricipalities and kingdoms. Deutschland 眉ber alles means the idea of a unified Germany should get priority over everything else at that time (including war with other countries, predominantly France).
Nonetheless, I have to agree that quoting it on a football related blog doesn't really make sense.
And to the Italian and Portuguese fans on this blog: I'm really looking forward to listening to your national anthems on Saturday in Stuttgart!

Isn't it amazing what a little travelling and experiencing of a country can do to peoples mentality. It is so good to see see so many England supporters changing their opinion of the German nation, their great people and their beautiful country. For too long people have been believing the absolute nonsense that is written in our gutter press.
For too long we have been obsessed with World War Two and stuck in a time warp. Perhaps the experiences of this World Cup will change peoples opinions of our natural cultural and social European ally for good, and at last destroy the 'little Englander' mantality.
My only regret from this is that when visiting Germany in the future it is going to be full of British people since many will opt to go there rather than the Med! The peaceful, cultural holiday may be shattered. But, that can only be a good thing.

As a German living in Berlin having studied in England the year after Germany won the European Championship in 1996, I'm really happy to see a growing understanding and respect between our two nations and that we hopefully get rid of each others stereotypes.
I always loved British football, especially the support. (I proudly support Celtic as my No. 1 club, don't worry I'm aware of the difference between English, Scots, Welsh and Irish too but it's fair to say that the passion about football is pretty much the same in all parts of the UK). Thanks for contributing to the great party over here! On the other hand it makes me sick that some foreign supporters were given a hard time in some places during the WC here in Germany for wearing the "wrong" shirt. All I can say is that the vast mayority of Germans are happy to welcome and party with all foreign visitors. Unfortunately there are a few jerks who are trying to spoil the party. The same happened to me while I was wearing a Germany away shirt on campus just to play football ten years ago in England, but again there are always the few, I still remember my year in England as one of my greatest.
I also have a deep respect for both Southern European and South American football. They've got probably the most skillfull players, if they just stopped acting on the pitch...
Obviously I'm glad how Germany performed so far and I really hope we can lift the cup.

Felix,
The Italian media (I think it was SKY in Italy) were only doing an after match analysis of the Germany v Argentina game as they do all games. They did NOT ask/make or contact FIFA asking them to take action on Frings. It was merely an observation. I also don't think it matters whether the Argentinian felt Fring's punch, but I saw it with my own eyes, and the intent was there, therefore he should be punished. Being spat at doesn't hurt, but its still wrong, so players need to be punished, just like Totti was in Euro 2004.
I would also like to say that I did not say the penalty given to Italy was a penalty, I said it was dubious, but was given owing to bad defending. You may wish to know, that most Italians did not agree with the referees decision. I would also like to point out that Bresciano rolled around big time after Materazzi's so called foul which hardly touched him, so you see they are all as bad as each other, don't pick on a select few nations.
I'm looking forward to hearing the l'inno di Mameli on Sunday 9th. Forza Azzurri!

The fact is that the Socceroos think that they deserved to win that game..How so? You played boring mechanical football and had no idea of how to break down probaly the best defence in the world.
Italy didn't play particulary well either but had least tried to get forward and actually try to score.
(you can thank your keeper for keeping you in the game)
I am no fan of the italians way of playing but they have played liked that for years and make the best of what they are good at. They sre tactically the best at defending and counter-attacking..

We did not cheat our way through. We have been lucky, that's it. Italy are not a greatest team this WC but the same can be said about the rest of the teams and we still have a slight chance to make it to Berlin. The rest, the bad press, the mafia-spaghetti-cheater stereotype is nonsense. Football is not fair, a few episodes decide most of the matches and if you're good enough or lucky enough to exploit them you win. What if Germany didn't win at the penalties? It was a 50/50 chance and they won, but they did not overpower argentina. Somehow that is due also to luck.....

according to the rules of football the intention of punching somebody is a reason good enough for a violent conduct sanction (red card in case the game is on).
About the Spiegel article: if I had found such rubbish on papers like "bild" i wouldn't have raised an eyebrow. When I read all this rubbish on Spiegel I wonder. Besides that, you can't call it a "misunderstood article", it was straight away offensive, also because it had nothing to do with football. We can have a banter on penalties, diving and acting on the football pitch, but don't imply that it means we can offend each other freely.
How happy would you be to read on a Italian newspaper (not a goosip tabloid)an article on German stereotypes? don't think that being called parasite is better and more funny than being called nazi!

Spiegel is well known to be a paper that's rather left wing, so it's even more a surprise...
as I read somewhere else, now I think the article had the intention to be a parody on people thinking in stereotypes, but didn't come over as such a parody.
Instead it came over as a nazi thing, and the reader is not to be blamed.
So... apparently misunderstood, but main thing is: badly written. An intended parody gone completely wrong.
And about football:

Hello All,
I actually find a lot of this blog ( I skimmed through it) is hilarious.
The England fans going on about cheating- If the English think that they have been cheated, don't we hear all about it- non-stop, but if the opposite happens-it is NEVER mentioned. (PS I blame the media-not the fans, for selective and censored information.)
Against Trinidad & Tobago, Peter Crouch cheated to score the first goal- does anyone know that? What would he have done if the defender had short hair? The answer: NOT score a goal.
The 成人快手 made a slight mention of it but stuck it in the very back pages of their website:
And exactly as Brent Sancho said- Frustratingly, the referee would not disallow an England goal against a small insignificant debut side like T&T.
However the German press covered it-
Please go to the link:
So, poor Ronaldo is being blamed for Rooney's red card, although Rooney is the one who stamped on the player. If an England player saw a Portugese player stamp on one of the English players, wouldn't the England player protest?
It is not the first and will not be the last. I am sorry for England that they are out of the Cup- although I knew that they would not get much further. What did the English people expect when their manager already had his P45 in his back pocket? 拢20m wasted- I say!
McLaren will do a better job than Sven. And to the English people- so that you don't get another big disappointment- see it all in perspective. Don't carry on the blame game- if it was not Portugal and Ronaldo, it would be someone else. England is out of the World Cup but at least they got to the quarter finals. From 196 teams vying to get into the World Cup finals, they got to the last 8-not bad. Imagine what they can do with a decent manager. At the end of the day only one team can win- so accept that you are out and enjoy the rest of the football. Your day will come although I hope it's not in 2066.
Did you know: When England did win the World Cup in 66: an excerpt from Wikipedia:
"England's decisive third goal has remained controversial ever since the match. According to the Laws of the Game the definition of a goal is when the whole of the ball passes over the goal line.
In England, it is commonly believed that the decision was correct and England supporters cite the good position of the linesman and the statement of Roger Hunt, the nearest England player to the ball, who claimed it was a goal and that was why he wheeled away in celebration rather than tapping the rebounding ball in.
However, in Germany it is commonly believed that the goal was given incorrectly and German supporters cite the possible bias of the Soviet linesman (Bakhramov was from Azerbaijan), especially as the USSR had just been defeated in the semi-finals by West Germany, and researchers from Oxford University who in 1995 announced the results of computer video analysis of the television footage, which gave new angles of view: they concluded that the shot had not crossed the line, so should have been disallowed.
Allowing the fourth goal to stand, although it was scored as a pitch invasion was in progress, was, like the award of the third goal, an example of home advantage. The laws of the game clearly state that in such circumstances, the game has to be stopped because of outside interference of any kind."
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose!
LONG LIVE FOOTBALL!

I think about english fans in a different way, than i thought before the worldcup!
Thanks to all people from England who visited Germany, I hope there will be a worldcup in England in some years, and we`ll make the same party in England again!
(I hope my english was not so bad)
See you, Kalki!

But all is not lost; at least if Peter Crouch gets injured and can't play football, he can always open up a hairstyling salon specialising in dreadlocks!

I am Italian living in London. I should support Italy but well I actually support England for their commitment, bravery and honesty both for players and supporters! but now that England is out I will support Italy and I will surely not support Germany. Firstly because, even if I like German people, I think as far as the game is concerned they have not proved to be good enough to win the cup! Secondly because they have been writing so much s##t about Italy and Italians that in this occasion they look like a nation of big headed, winging grumpy gits!

I have taken Germany to my heart. Being here for 4 weeks now I can only say positive things about the Germans. They are a bunch of very friendly people. I never expected such a positive attitude of the Germans. Now I realize how stupid all those things were that we were brought up with. Today's Germany is a new Germany, a modern germany with modern people living in a stabile democracy.
I can only hope that our right wing press (Daily Mail, Daily Express, Sun..) have learned their lessons. We were brought up with an anti-german attitude. While our press loves to have a go at the Germans, they welcome us with open arms. I have made lots of german friends already.
I will stay here till July 9th, and hopefully we will see a France - Germany final.
Come on you Krauts!

I still find it wonderful to read this considerable amount of mutual Anglo-German admiration. Unlike a couple of posts in this blog suggest, I don't think this odd and unexpected love-affair is a new "axis" against southern europeans. And, by the way, I don't really expect it to last for much longer than the remaining days of the world cup.
As far as German-bashing in British media is concerned, maybe the 成人快手 or another neutral institution should award a prize "German-basher of the year". This year's front runner is clearly Jeremy Clarkson. He was already mentioned several times in this blog alone.

Can't believe this blog discussion is still going...! a bit like Portugal's participation in the tournament.
It's very rare that England get knocked out of the World Cup with a straight forward win/victory.
Since 1986 we've been knocked out by 'the hand of God', penalties, penalties, and more penalties. We scored a legit goal (off Sol Campbell's cheek) in '98 against Argy, but it was disallowed by the same ref who sent off Beckham for his tap on Simione after he'd rubbed his face in the ground. 2002 was teh first time in a while that the trend was broken... hope for a new dawn in straight forward victories in England games (either way) beckoned... and then this. The Portugal game.
If Portugal had beaten us with imaginitive play and goals during the match, I may have backed them to win the whole thing. They didn't and they can't.
The 2 players who can make the world cup for them are Manishe (however it's spelt...) and Deco. Ronaldo is king only of step-overs and cockiness I'm afraid, nothing more.
So, after that long-winded diatribe, for me it's Germany to win if Zidane gets a touch of atheritis in the final.
By the way... I love the Portuguese and their country (in case anyone thinks I'm anti-Portugal).

From a statistical point of view Germany will win tonite:
The Date: On July 4t, 1954 Germany won her first World Cup final against Hungary in Bern. On July 4th, 1990 Germany sent home England in that spectacular semi final...
The Location: Germany hasn't been defeated in Dortmund yet. The only team that managed to draw against Germany in Dortmund was Wales in 1977. Germany's overall score in Dortmund: 59:7
The Coach: This is Klinsmann's 33rd match as head of the German squad. 20 of the previous 32 matches Germany won, 7 ended in a draw and only 5 were lost.
The Jerseys: Germany will play in their traditional black and white shirts and shorts.
The Momentum: Inlcuding that match against Argentinia Germany is now in a run of 9 consecutive wins. The 5 wins of this WC alone are a new German record!
The Semi-Final Factor: Of their nine WC semi finals so far Germany won six. The last time we were defeated was in 1970 - against Italy I have to admit.
The Penality Score: Germany's WC penality shootout socre is world record. Italy has lost three shootouts during tournaments.
The Brazil-Factor: Out of all the finals without Brasil taking place in them Germany played six, Italy only 4.
Plus: We'll take revenge for Italy's slimy and unfair anti-Frings campagne! Somebody needs to teach them great sportsmanship at last.

Hi,
As a half-German who grew up in GB I find it delightful to read these messages. I was really glad that the English football fans had fun here and there was no violence.
It's a bit sad that the Italian press had to bring up this stuff with Frings, especially since Cruz said he didn't hit him (although the Brit. media don't mention it ;) ). What's the point in banning someone from a game if the injured party says they weren't hit? I've seen so many Italians here waving German and Italian flags after the games and it's a pity the media have to go stirring when the fans of all teams have been so good throughout this World Cup. Are they upset that they haven't had anything to moan about?
I've seen lots of kids at the playground wearing England shirts btw, and found it rather delightful. Here on the French border the French come to watch the games in Germany and celebrate here.
So far this WC has really been a lot of fun with no bad feelings and I hope it stays that way.

I must agree with all the coments regrding the germans. Their attitude, morals, values and beliefs are spot on. I cant belive how brain washed we have been in the past. Going to to germany for the world cup has been one of the mosst educational holidays ever.
I am ashamed of our press and their stupid right wing comments. I think a lot of nations can learn a lot off this country. Even if they dont win the world cup they sure do deserve the "best hosts of a world cup EVER"
I remember euro 96 and people congratulating us, but we dont even come close to this excellent event. The main reason being the minority of thugs who were not allowed in germany, could not be kicked out of their own country, hence our name is tarnished. I hope that the english have done some educating at this world cup, hopefully now to global supporters of football understand that the sterotype of the english hooligan is first of all in the past, eg. 80's and secondly press related. from the feedback on this site (bar most of the people form Portugal), most people understand our passion, commitment, and deadication for this great sport. We can only hope that the next world cup in europe (2024)will come to the nation that invented the sport, then maybe we can have educated the small minded people in our country.
once again thanks to all the great people out there who have made this the best holiday in history for me!!
wishing you all the best in the last 2 stages

Nick,
what I felt after the England-Portugal match was anything else but Schadenfreude. I was shocked to see Portugal win as they simply didn't deserve it. It actually even made me very aggressive and the only thing that could help me get over it with was to see France send home those arrogant Brazilians.
Like many other Germans I would have loved to see England proceed in this tournament. Actually, being the host nation, I think if anybody had the right to send home our English guests it would have been us in the final ;-)
But what's the use of all of us wanting England to proceed if SGE didn't agree with that...

"...at least I can hope for some brilliant midfield play..."
HA! HA! HA! HA! DECO PLAYED IN THE EURO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL AND WAS USELESS. HE'S AN OVERRATED BRAZILIAN.
"...and a brilliantly entertaining match..."
PORTUGAL ARE RUBBISH, THEY ARE DEFINITELY NOT ENTERTAINING YOU DRIP!
"...Maybe Ronaldo will cry at the end..."
WHAT DO YOU MEAN MAYBE? HE'S A SOFT LAD, OF COURSE HE'LL CRY.
"Maybe the Portuguese team will lift their game and go all the way much to your disappointment..."
THE ONLY WAY PORTUGAL WILL EVER WIN ANYTHING IS BY CHEATING! FACT! YES, WE WILL BE DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE WE DONT TOLERATE CHEATING, DIVING, MELLOW-DRAMATIC IDIOTS ON THE SPORTING FIELD. WE DONT LIKE PEOPLE WHO RUN TO THE REF LIKE SOME SCHOOLBOY SAYING 'SEND HIM OFF, SEND HIM OFF'
"...maybe they'll be knocked out"
MAYBE? HA! HA! I CANT SEE FRANCE DOING ANYTHING BUT HAMMERING USELESS PORTUGAL. THE ONLY WAY PORTUGAL CAN WIN IS BY CHEATING.
"...at least we are not whining about being 'world-class' and 'deserving' to be in the semis"
NO,PORTUGAL ARE TRYING TO BACKTRACK AND MAKE OUT THEY DESERVE TO BE IN THE SEMI-FINAL. EVERYONE ELSE KNOWS THIS IS A LIE. EVERYONE! ITALY DONT DESERVE TO BE IN THE SEMI-FINAL EITHER. THEY CHEATED AGAINST AUSTRALIA. EVERYONE KNOWS IT. BUT I SUPPOSE YOU PORTUGAL PEOPLE DONT MIND CHEATING TO GAIN GLORY. THAT'S WHERE WE'RE DIFFERENT. WE DO. WE ONLY WANT TO GAIN IT THROUGH EFFORT, HARD WORK AND FAIRNESS. YOU DON'T. THIS WORKS OUT TO ENGLAND, GERMANY AND AUSTRALIA BEING TOP COUNTRIES, WHILST PORTUGAL IS A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY. RIGHT? SO KEEP UP YOUR FALSE, STUPID, CHEATING, LAZY WAY OF DOING THINGS AND SEE WHERE IT GETS YOU.
"We work hard, whether the referee calls go our way or not (Deco was the first guy to get sent off for being on the receiving end of a rugby tackle"
Work hard? ha! ha! ha! ha! Portugal couldnt even beat England with their cheating advantage. All they did was kick it in the goal area and hope someone got it. They did no hard work.
What is truly pathetic about it is as soon as they saw the chance to get rooney sent off they did the hard work of springting to the ref like the big girls blouses they are.
FRANCE ARE GOING TO SMASH PORTUGAL!
I want Germany to win the cup as England no longer can. To hell with portugal and its diving, whining, cry baby cheats.

In reply to post 380, my main point was that I find it a little sad that it has taken 60 years and a World Cup in Germany for those prejudices to end.
And my post did get posted two or three times but that was because I kept receiving an error message which I thought meant the post didn't get posted.
Also I do feel the War on Terror is completely justified - what would you do if you're country was attacked by terrorists and hundreds of thousands killed? Would you sit on your a*s and do nothing? No you wouldn't. But we'll leave that debate for a different blog.
Plus how do you know the Germans aren't despised anymore? Did you sit in a pub in Britain with the other hundred people around you singing "there were 10 German bombers in the air" during the Portugal game. That song had completely no relevance to the occasion and people were still singing it.
Feel free to debate but I'm not the only one in this blog who has brought up politics

This may be a little 'left-field' but there is a pattern with English sport which seems to be becoming more and more obvious (to me at least!).
When it comes to the crunch I believe we lack a natural positivity...we seem to worry too much! I believe this is why we only managed to perform against Portugal once we had gone down to ten men - we appear to like to be underdogs but can't seem to deliver when we are favourites.
Compare our cricket team to the Australians - they exude positivity and are convinced of their ability to win! This is why we will not hang onto the Ashes we won so heroically...I just believe it is a cultural thing!
If we are ever going to live up to the high expectations of our media (which, by the way, is rarely reflected by the views of the general populus unless after a few pints of lager or a labotomy!) then I feel a cultural change is required - I don't have the answers, but in the words of Chris Akabussy (sorry about the spelling?) on some rubbish advert I saw once -"it's all about PMA - positive mental attitude!".
On the cheating thing - I think that every country is guilty as charged - the only way to combat this, for me, is to empower the FA/FIFA to ban players after the fact using video evidence...that way players will know they will be caught no matter how sneaky they are.
Why should we just ignore these occurrences just because the ref. didn't see it at the time - when the replay is shown, we all see it happen. This is why everybody gets so angry - there is nothing anyone has the power to do. I think the Portugal v Holland game should at the very least serve some purpose and cause FIFA to act...this method will not cause the game to slow, but it must also be understood that this will not affect the final result of the match.
I am rooting for a France v Germany final (France: because they've really turned it around from their earlier performances and Germany: Because they have been so consistent).
Portugal and Italy haven't really given much to the tournament so far(and yes, before you start, I believe the same of England so this is not bad-loser syndrome! They deserved to go out - I wonder why so many players left it until the WC to put in their worst performances of the year so far - possibly see above theory!?).
It seems that the Germans have put on a good show...great stuff! It also appears this could have done more good for Anglo-German relations and German 'self' than the sum of its parts.
Hoping for nothing but positives from the remainder of the tournament - whoever wins.
Good luck to all and peace in Europe!

I've always told my friends in England that you are very welcome down here, but still a couple of them could not believe.
It is a shame that you are out now and we can't have our revenge for the 66 world cup ;-)
But I think that it's not Ronaldo's fault that you are out, though I can't stand this whining guy!!! he is awful!
But that Rooney kicked him in the nuts was just stupid, though he should have get the free kick much earlier in this scene. And that he is waiting for Ronaldo in ManU is nothing more than childish. He still has to learn a lot in his life, and from time to time he should blame himself he is old enough to do so.
I know you guys love him and I can understand that, so I hope he will make the same progress like Beckham did after his red card in '98.
So, I wish you good luck for the euro qualifiers and hope to see you down in austria/switzerland, it was fun partying with you again.
@meat pie: btw, you can not really translate the song as it is a rhyme, but I will give it try.
The figures are the years of the german WC titles and afterwards it means literally:
54, 74, 90, 2006 so we're singing altogether with the heart in our hands and the passion in our feet we will become world champion.

Hi all,
I am really sick of this conspiracy theory against Portugal. It was fine when we were the 鈥淏razilians of Europe鈥 playing nice football and getting kicked out early in the process, but as the underdog makes it to European finals, and even worse, to the world cup finals, suddenly the team is no so nice any more.
Portugal has no fair play鈥 What about the Dutch team, not returning the ball after a Portuguese player had sent it out so a colleague could get assistance? All this theory is based on a biased sample of information selected by non serious media.
Is it possible that only Portuguese players run to taunt the referee after a fault? Have I been hallucinating when I saw that happening in probably every game?
Portugal does not have as much stars as England or Germany, but certainly has players willing to fight for the team and a great Brazilian coach, who wisely dismissed FA chasing before the world cup where he would be training Portugal 鈥 Now that is a nice example of fair play, trying to steal other team鈥檚 coach just before an important competition.
As you try to chose your favorite scapegoat 鈥 C Ronaldo? Erikson? Beckham? (ah, no, this one was already used), think for a moment what is the problem with England 鈥 So many stars and the best you can do is quarter finals. What is wrong with your team?

I just posted it in anther thread on here: Being German I have to say I can really, really live with the outcome of that semi final. Italy won deservedly. And it doesn't even feel all too harsh on me. Germany played a great tournament. We've had a great time with all of our guest from around the world - and in my case being a Frankfurt resident - particularly with the English at the first weekend of WC.
Now who am I going to support in the final? Italy or France? If Italy got the cup Germany hadn't lost to anyone but the new world champion. Would be a good feeling. But then again what about Zizou? And France are our best friends in the EU. I have a sneaky suspicion it'll be France for me in the end.
Head up Portugal. You're gonna end up #4 in the world... let's see how you're trying to cheat on us in Stuttgart on Saturday...

I feel bad for the german team, because they tried hard too. I think in the very end, their mentality changed to "Its just a couple minutes, we will get then in the Penality Shootout".Thats what probably got them. Italians managed to turn things around so quick it was almost unbelievable. I was shell shocked as i couldnt believe what was going on.
Now i dont have any favourites, Italy, France, Portugal all deserve to win. Good thing is when you dont have prejudice against/for a team, you can enjoy it much better.

Well for the second time in 4 days im gutted. Fair play to germany they put up a brave fight, but Italy just had the edge over them, well done to them for that. All the Italians must be dizzy.....not with joy....but from the amount of times they roll around on the floor. If they just stuck to playing football then maybe people would respect them. during the first 90 minutes it was counted 87 times the players had gone to ground, apparently "injured". There was more rolling and crawling than at a todler school. In the extra time it was counted at 6, which is much better. They looked like they wanted to win the game in extra time, they were playing the sport how it should be played, so obviously you are capable of doing it. So please Italy do yourself a favour and play with your head and your feet, not with your hands holding you knees. You make the "beautiful game" look a little bit ugly, with this kind of childish attitude. The globe knows it too, you wonder why you have this label. Overall well done to Italy considering the circustances you have done excellent, and I hold my hands up and say you play with passion beyond belief, the only negative is this disease of diving, what turns a great game into a pain to watch, it infuriates me. I dread to think what the final would be like if portugal get through it would be like dive central. Other than that best of luck to you guys in the final you deserve it, I think there may just be another star on the blue shirt when they return to Africa.

What a difference a decent ref makes! All FIFA refs should be made to watch last night's match for lessons on how to keep a match flowing and how by refusing to be conned by divers in the first 20 mins, the players learn to stay on their feet or recover very quickly from "career-ending" tackles. It was a great game of football. Can you imagine how England would have coped with either of these teams?

No, seriously. In the end, especially after reading the article here, I think it doesn't matter since Germany has won much more than just the WC: they won the favour of the rest of the world. And isn't that even more important? Maybe it helps us (all of us) to overcome old prejudices and form new friendships.
Again thanks to all the people who have made this World Cup what it is: a great celebration, for everybody!

SAY NO TO RACISM: HEADBUTT A RACIST
why is everyone calling Zidane's foul vicious and ugly? review the replay and watch just how much the italian player 'razzi embellishes in the opportunity after trash-talking Zidane with apparent racial remarks. Zidane had a better chance of hurting his neck than 'razzi had of suffering any type of injury. I mean, translate the distance and velocity of the head as it makes contact with the chest and one might find an appropriate comparision of being punched by their little sister, or being hit with a dodgeball in grade school. It was probably the classiest foul of the tournament: It was not a bloody elbow to the face, not a groin-mushing foot stomp or an ankle-shredding slide tackle. It was certainly a shame to see the Frenchman be pushed to that level and resort to physical contact, but people need to stop reacting to it as if Zinedine Zidane's actions were violent. He embarrassed the guy more than anything
