³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ 1, Technical gremlins 0

paul_atherton.gifIBC, MUNICH – On Sunday, the German FA organised a practice match to allow all the broadcasters to test out their systems before the opening game on Friday. The match was played at the Allianz Arena in Munich, the venue for the opening match, between two German under-12 sides (no, the 1 and 2 aren’t the wrong way round!) posing as Germany and Costa Rica.

A film of the game was repeated today so everyone could have another run through. So we had Ray Stubbs in the studio presenting the action, joined on the couch by pundits Paul Armstrong (Match of the Day editor and fellow blogger), executive producer Phil Bigwood and producer Sunil Patel. Jonathan Pearce provided his usual vibrant commentary.

And the game was pretty good! It was only 15 minutes each way but the standard was frighteningly high. Mini-Germany won 1-0 if you’re interested, mini-Klose scoring the only goal.

Transmitting video between Munich and Berlin is a major logistical operation (I could get technical here, but you’ll just have to believe me on this point) and Sunday was the first time the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ team had been able to test out their system during a live match…

But you’ll be pleased to hear there were no major hiccups on Sunday or today. So everything is in place for Friday’s first World Cup broadcast (by the way!).

After several requests yesterday, I’ve added some photos of the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ’s office at the IBC on . A colleague in Berlin also sent me a picture showing the stunning views from the Match of the Day studio – .

Do you have any footage of the dress rehearsal broadcast? I'd find it rather intriguing to watch, if so. Hearing Jonathan Pearce going mad over a 12 year old scoring sounds rather amusing.

It is good to see that world cup has been started without any accident as Germany won against Costa Rica; no matter, whether it is a pre-world cup testing match or not. It is right that it is a big tournament and it is very tough to ensure that there will have no technical problem but I hope German authority will overcome all kinds of problem.

Well done the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ.

This will probably be the last one I see thow, as heading off to Germany in a Motorhome this afternoon.
See you all out there!

You'll get barred by FIFA if you carry on calling it the Allianz Arena. NAUGHTY!

I'm afraid we can't put coverage of the game online - don't forget it was a practice for us, so it wasn't the smoothest and most professional Match of the Day production you will ever see! You'll just have to wait for the real thing on Friday...

Alright Paul,

Loving the blog!! Keep the good work up, regaling us with your witty anecdotes! I can't wait for the action to kick-off tomorrow - everyone over here is pretty excited as I'm sure you can well imagine. Rooney, I'm convinced, will fire us to victory in the latter rounds!

Have you managed to see the Allianz Arena? It looks like an awesome ground to be fair and am looking forward to taking in a game there when I hit Muenchen for Oktoberfest in late summer.

Keep the news coming...
