A Wright Mess You've Got Me Into
- 14 Jun 06, 12:07 PM
BERLIN - Tomorrow marks part one of an exclusive interview with Ian Wright for the World Cup Daily. He was honest and forthright and I hope you enjoy watching the results (the video will be available from tomorrow).
And take a bow Messrs. Cobley, Zasikowski, Wilkinson, Newbold, Dobbie and Barnes for your questions. Ian was impressed with you all. I鈥檓 more than happy to take your suggestions for which pundit you would like to quiz next鈥he results of which should be seen on the Daily next week.
Sean Wilkinson, for example, asked Ian: "If England fail for the third time at a major tournament with Sven, can you see Steve McClaren doing a better job?"
Wrighty's response was that McClaren: 鈥淲ill have my full backing but I don鈥檛 know exactly what part of this England team has got Sven鈥檚 input and what part has Steve McClaren鈥檚."
I was fortunate enough to go to Brazil vs Croatia last night and - never mind the match - it offered a fascinating insight into the world of an ex-player.
I had to accompany Marcel Desailly to the stadium - and cajoling him into the lift of our office to leave the building whilst he was doing a live interview over his phone with French TV was tricky indeed.
When we finally arrived at the ground, Marcel was mobbed by supporters, all desperate for tickets. He duly posed for photos, signed autographs and managed to keep a multitude of conversations going. Including, naturellement, his interview with French TV.
And of course, as we were on Marcel time, we got to the game late but when you鈥檝e waited 29 years to go to a World Cup game, what鈥檚 an extra 20 minutes?
EDITOR'S NOTE: A lot of you have been expressing your opinions about all our pundits on our blog and while we welcome heathy debate on our coverage, can we ask that you make your points without resorting to offensive abuse.

Why everytime Brazil play do all the studio guests and pundits and commentators go over the top in praise i would much prefer a balanced opinion based on recent performances, not based on past histories. The praise that was given before the game for Ronaldo could not be based on any game that we have seen him in for Real Madrid recently, for instance in the Champions league against Arsenal he was terrible, so when i heard the likes of Hansen and Wrighty enthusing over him i thought the have not watched the same player i have and i was proved right by his performance. If Brazil are brilliant then by all means say so but the likes of Ronaldino, KaKa and Adriano didnt do it for me. Please judge players on performance and not on past glories.

It's not just your pundits.
I have every admiration for the way the 成人快手 has provided excellent coverage of the tournament online and using their digital service. However the problem is that the core service -the television coverage is at itss lowest ebb for years. In the past it has always stood up well against the commercial competition - but for some reason the 成人快手 has taken the time over the past few years to make a decent effort of 'matching' the inanities and old boy network feel.
This isn't some minority view - everyone I have spoken to since Friday in London is of the same opinion! It's a running joke how bad Motty, Lawro and Wright are! It's soo bad it's ruining people's enjoyment. The pub I was in actually turned the sound off on Saturday due to customer requests not to have to listen to Wright and Shearer boring for England. I never understood fully until now why everyone who has Sky watches their coverage of the cup final in the last couple of years instead of the 成人快手.
Listening to Motty and Lawro last night was like hearing two pub bores - it seems they can't get through 5 minutes without chuckling at one of their own 'jokes'.
The 成人快手 reached hights of excellence in 96, 98 and was decent as late as 2002. However either through a lack of caring or a completely warped view of what the public wants it has thrown that reputation away.
The only high point so far was the Italy match where Martin O'Neill, Desailly and Hansen managed a decent conversation/argument about the game without having a Wright or Shearer sitting there smugly talking rubbish or spouting banalities.
And if you want passion and interesting television you only have to hark back to those days when you allowed genuinly interesting pundits more time how about this recollection from doublehipness on the Guardian's blog -
"Ah yes, I remember Cruyffs brief appearance as a 成人快手 pundit well. Lineker made some wisecrack about being made to play on the wing, so Sir Johan de Cruyff looked at him with a steely eye and asked if he had did as he was instructed by his coach. Leicesters finest, looking for all the world like a naughty schoolboy in the headmasters office for a telling off replied that he had, so Cruyff nodded and hit young Gary with a corker, "tell me what did we win that year", the reply from Lineker with his head bowed and in a very softly spoken voice was "we won the league"."

Hi Glen, just a comment on last nights coverage of Brazil v Croatia. In the half time highlights package you included a Ronaldinho 'look the other way' pass that he played in the box, but missed out a far better one from earlier in the first half. He was on the move near the halfway line at the time, and played a perfect forty yard pass into one of the strikers feet, whilst swivelling to look behind him. I know you have to resist turning half time into a Ronaldinho love-in, but I wouldn't be too upset if you did!

I am very suspicious of this question and answer session with Ian Wright that the MOTD team are doing. Is it nothing more than a PR stunt to show Ian Wright in a positive light? When one considers the number of complaints the 成人快手 are receiving about him through formal channels and on this blog about him. Also the written media are constantly complaining about Ian Wright's performances on the 成人快手.
Will this 'World Cup Daily Show' actually ask Ian Wright about the fact that he is very unpopular amongst some members of the British public?
Some aspects of the 成人快手 World Cup coverage have been good, but for me the continued presence of Ian Wright continues to let the whole thing down. What did he exactly contribute to last night's Brazil game? The idea that he is the 成人快手's 'man on the street' in the studio is laughable! The 成人快手 really need to review it's entire pundit's line-up post World Cup and not give the licence fee payer the excuse that Ian Wright is a good part of the '成人快手 Sports mix'.

there is nothing wrong with heaping praises for Ronaldo the way Wright did during the game. Ronaldo is a tried and tested beast in the major tournaments. remember in France 98 and even in Japan/Korea he was not feeling well but still managed to help Brazil go all the way.
this is the same reason why our own Michael Owen has been included in the setup yet he is not 100% fit. These players are tried and tested on the big stage.

Damn, I'm sorry I missed the chance to put a question to Ian Wright.
I would have loved to ask him if he doesn't, as he stated live on TV this week, care about anyone but England, what exactly he thinks he's doing being paid to go to Germany.
Funnily enough, the vast majority of us tune in to hear pundits discuss the game we are watching - Wright's pathetic reply that he only cared about England surely puts a question mark next to his suitability as a pundit?

I hope Mr. Wright was challenged about his views on diving. It is unacceptable to continue with him during the tournament if he does not rescind his comments. Not that this is my only gripe about him being there at all, but probably the easiest one to start with.

Ian Wright is not up to the job I am afraid. He has nothing to contribute and should not be paid to appear as a pundit, expert, or anything else. It has now become embarrassing. The most dispiriting moment occurred when he declared no interest in any team apart from England. Mr. Wright, xenophobia is not the same as racism, but it springs from the same source: ignorance and prejudice, two characteristics which should have no place on the 成人快手.
As for Motson and Lawrenson, oddly enough I don't mind the former, but Lawrenson says nothing that I could not have said myself, and so does not justify his wages.
The best pundits are Gordon Strachan, Martin O'Neill and Ian Dowie, all of whom talk about what happens on the field of play, and do so in an informative way.

Hi,
This years commentators list seems like a who, wno's of out of work managers and players. A sugestion to spice it up would be to have a suprise commentator or expert viewer plucked from the ground and asked to review the match with the other experts. This would give a added spice and reality to the now rather dull and boring after match comments.
PS I live in Hamburg and I am available.....
A bit more sparkel please,,,,
