Finding silence at St Beuno's

Denbighshire's is to feature in a ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ2 series, The Big Silence.

The programme follows five people who take time out from their busy lives to try and discover why silence is so hard to attain in modern-day society.

As part of the series the five volunteers spent eight days at St Beuno's, during which no talking was allowed except for a one-hour counselling session each day.

Beams of light from Jubilee Tower

Tests of the laser beam from Jubilee Tower have been conducted nightly this week


Sunday sees celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone for on the top of Moel Famau.

The celebrations begin at 2pm with live music, street dancing and circus entertainment at the Bwlch Pen Barras car park.

Then, in an echo of the when 5,000 people walked to the summit of Moel Famau to see the foundation stone being laid, there will again be a procession to the site of the tower starting at 4.45pm.

A grim week on the jobs front

It has been another grim week on the jobs front with several announcements about staff cuts.

Yesterday, we heard 36 jobs could be going at a along with six more from the closure of Wrexham's passport office.

That came on top of news that a massive 180 jobs were going with the closure of a department at Shotton steelworks.

Plus, Flintshire council were looking at making savings with cuts in its leisure services, potentially affecting 21 jobs, - but .

Last week, a bakery in Hawarden was taken over after going in adminstration, leaving 93 workers faxcing an uncertain future.

And talks began at the beginning of the month about the fate of 150 Tetra Pak workers due to changes at the factory on Wrexham industrial estate.

Celebrity friends support Andrew's fund raising efforts

Since being diagnosed with , a form of motor neurone disease, has thrown himself into efforts to raise funds for the which aims to find a cure for the illness.

Mike Peters and other celebrities support Andrew Gray's fundraising efforts

He's been supported by his large family and also by his colleague, who happens to be Mike Peters of The Alarm.

Andrew is a guitar technician for the Alarm frontman and a musician in his own right. Over the years he has supported Mike Peters in his efforts to raise funds for cancer treatment following his own battles with the illness, including joining Mike in a trek up Snowdon.

Now Mike is returning the favour by supporting Andrew and encouraging people to buy the wristbands which raise funds for the .

During recent filming for Vinyl, a movie based on a hoax which saw Mike Peters score a hit with a spoof band, he got actors Keith Allen and Phil Daniels involved and wearing the wristbands.

For further information on Andrew's campaign take a look at his sister, Janet's which includes photos of guitars Andrew has designed and built over the years, some of which have been played by Mike Peters.

Jubilee Tower anniversary approaches

Ahead of the 200th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of Moel Famau's Jubilee Tower we've had this striking black and white photo added to our Flickr group by .

A day of celebrations will be held on 24 October, a day before the 200th anniversary of the building of the tower. Then, 5000 people processed to the top of Moel Famau to watch the foundation stone being laid and this will be replicated with a modern-day procession to the summit as well as other events listed on the website.
