Summer Tour - Fishing & cricket

Derek Brockway Derek Brockway | 16:34 UK time, Friday, 21 August 2009

Yesterday Claire and I had a go at fishing on the banks of the River Tywi near Nantgaredig in Carmarthenshire. The river is famous for salmon and sea trout known locally as sewin.

Many say it's the best place to catch it in Europe. Apparently fishermen like rain because it helps to colour the river and attract the fish up stream.

We did have a few blustery showers but Claire and I didn't catch a thing, not even a tadpole or an old boot.

Today we've put our fishing rods away and we're trying another sport...

We've come to Carew Cricket Club in Pembrokeshire which opened in 1896 and I'm told they're looking for new players!

I've been to a few cricket clubs in the past but this must be one of the nicest overlooking Carew castle on the banks of the river Cleddau.

The pitch is in tip top condition because of the warm and wet summer. Cricket is very dependant on the weather.

After heavy rain the wicket can dry-up quickly making the ball grip the ground more causing problems for the batters and humidity can help with the swing of the ball.

Everyone here has been really friendly. The club is an integral part of the community with 8 teams in a village with a population of around 1000.

They have made us feel very welcome and Rowena Lloyd laid on a fantastic lunch. After some rain this morning, the weather has cheered up in Carew this afternoon with plenty of sunshine.

The forecast for the weekend remains mixed:

Saturday will start dry with some sunshine in the north but cloud will spread from the south bringing a few spots of light rain.

Sunday doesn't looks more unsettled, wetter and windier with outbreaks of rain. The rain heaviest in the west.
