Derek takes to the skies

Derek Brockway Derek Brockway | 07:47 UK time, Friday, 7 August 2009

When I pulled the curtains back this morning I was greeted with mist and fog in Corwen. An early sign of Autumn, I thought to myself but the sun is still pretty strong at this time of year so the mist and fog soon lifted leaving another fine and pleasantly warm day at the Eisteddfod in Bala.

This morning instead of travelling to the Maes as usual, I paid a visit to the near Llandegla. Brian Williams invited me along after hearing that Wales Today were looking for places to visit as part of our summer tour which has a sporty theme this year.

My pilot was main instructor Kenneth Payne and after a short safety briefing we fastened our seat belts and prepared for take off. The ascent was sharp but the views were wonderful, looking down on Llangollen, the Horseshoe Pass, the Vale of Clwyd and the Snowdonia mountains in the distance.

It was great fun and an experience of a life time but going around in circles a few times did make me feel a bit queasy. So I was glad to land in one piece and be back on terra firma again! You can see more of my flight in a glider on Wales Today the week after next.

After lunch at the , I headed back to Bala to prepare my forecast. I've also managed to get a ticket for tonight's sell-out concert in the main pavilion starring Only Men Aloud, Rhydian and Cor Ysgol Glanaethwy so I am really looking forward to that.

The forecast looks good tomorrow with more dry weather and some sunshine and it's not looking too bad for the weekend either. Saturday I reckon the best day. Largely dry with some sunshine and pleasantly warm. Sunday looks cloudier with a few scattered showers.

Pob Hwyl
Derek
