Joan Baker retrospective at the National Library of Wales

A retrospective exhibition spanning Joan Baker's 65 year artistic career is currently on show at in Aberystwyth.

This exhibition was created and toured by the in order to mark the recent awarding of fully accredited museum status to the Art Collection Museum at the university.

Joan Baker was born in Cardiff in 1922. She went to Howells School for Girls in Llandaff and from September 1939 to 1944 she studied painting, followed by art teacher training, at the Cardiff College of Art.

Between 1945 and 1983 Baker taught at the college, on the Intermediate and Preliminary Courses and on the Foundation Studies in Art and Design Course. She retired in 1983.

Baker exhibited extensively in Wales from 1948 to 1962, and had her first solo exhibition - Joan Baker: A Chosen Way - at Cardiff College of Art's Howard Gardens Gallery in 1984. She has continued to paint the coast, gardens, parks, woods and hills of Glamorgan ever since.

Joan Baker: A Retrospective runs at until 11 September 2010.
