I was really saddened to hear that the artist Arthur Giardelli had died. He was 98 and had been one of the major figures in Welsh art for over half a century.
Arthur Giardelli was actually born in London but came to Wales to work
and teach. For over 30 years he was a tutor at Aberystwyth University
first taking up that post in 1958.
He helped found the art collection there and also advised Swansea University on theirs as well as being one of the founders of the 56 Group Wales.
Giardelli painted watercolours but was fascinated by the creation of work from found materials. When I last met him at his home in Pembrokeshire he was a sprightly 90 year old still working on pieces that you might have expected to be the creation of much younger artists.
He was also delightful and an artist who was generous to others in sharing his advice and experience.
