Ooh ah Cannes-tona
Eric Cantona starring in a surreal Ken Loach comedy? It could only be at the , where I will be for the next few days and where Mr Cantona's appearance on the red carpet is likely to be a highlight.
The festival will open with a 3D animation, called , a first on both counts. Is this the following its "moments" in the 1950s and the 80s when it was cast aside as gimmicky?
Apart from that, returns to its first unashamedly arthouse competition in years, with Ang Lee, Jane Campion, Michael Haneke, Lars von Trier, Ken Loach and Quentin Tarantino among the big names vying for the Palme D'or.
The usual 4,000-plus journalists will be jostling for access and, of course, hoping to chance upon a cinematic masterpiece! Look out for my Cannes blogs as well as radio and TV reports.

Of course they are going to send people over there, Cannes is always a massive human interest story. People in this country love the cinema even in the downturn. Star Trek smashed box office records this past weekend for example. This year one of our own, Ken Loach, is over there again showing that we still make great films. The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ does an excellent job with the money it receives from our television licenses and selling its products around the world. Money it spreads out over radio, internet and television as the largest newgathering agency in the world and a maker of consistently good programmes. It is trusted and respected all around the world, but grumbled about at home. Don't get shirty on a blog with a woman who is doing her job for an organisation we should all be very proud of just because she is in Cannes and you are not.
Don't even get me started on MP's expenses. Non-story.
