Blind Parents

Julie Reid had an extraordinary childhood. Both her parents were blind and they managed to hold down successful careers and raise three children with hardly any outside help.

Now that Julie has young children of her own she has been assessing her own upbringing and has begun to understand the unique challenges her parents faced.

Great to hear Julie Reid this morning. My first memories of her are when she and her brothers came to stay with us as very small children whilst her parents went skiing.

Her mum used to babysit for us and I only tried once to creep downstairs to slip in and watch the tv alongside her - of course she realised that I was there and kindly dismissed me back to bed!

Recently when we met Etta when I had my new(ish) baby in tow, Etta 'learned his face' with her hands, just as she used to do when we were little.

We viewed Etta and Fred as 'normal parents' and they are loved and respected in their community as they are both charming and funny people who have not stopped at any barriers to living full lives.

Julie has always been excellent at English and very adeptly verbal (!) I wonder if her verbal strengths have been enhanced by her upbringing.

    (do send her our love!!)

I was fascinating by the story of the woman with Blind Parents. In families with Deaf parents there are also intersting issues: E.g. Children being used to communicate, and the embarasment that others may feel in discussing adult topics via a child.

I beleive that your 成人快手 TV progrtamme touched on that topic a few years ago.

You must have Julie Burchill on the programme - she who made John Humphrey gasp for breath on Thursday am at 0745
Your programme is the highlight of the radio 4 week. Thank God you replaced David Stafford.
    Best wishes

I can sympathise with Muriel Gray regarding seagulls. Living in Brighton I have experienced the joys of them stealing hotdogs from my hands and returning from holiday to find a house full of flies. Apparently a baby seagull had fallen down the chimney and quietly decayed with the resultant maggots taking up tenancy in the carpet. So baseballl bats alll round then.
