Dave Pearce is believed to be the last eel fisherman on the Thames. He fishes the stretch from Deptford to Tower Bridge and his all time favourite fish is…..red mullet. He’s only 38 years old and it might fit with the stereotype if we told you that eels had been in his family for six generations – but they haven’t. Dave used to be a bricky…

Farmed eels are used in this country as they float to the top of the product to make it look better.

As the son of an eel fisherman and a lock keeper in the Fens(Mum was the keeper) I noticed one way of cooking eel Mr Pearce didn't mention. I'm not a great fan of eel ordinarily but freshly smoked eel is absolutely fabulous. Far better than salmon.

I'm a mature student, doing a project on eels, and I'm looking into different aspects of eels: history, myth, life cycle, why they aren't popular in this country, etc, and I'd really like to get in touch with Dave Pearce. Maybe if he was agreeable helping out on a catch or buying some. Please could you pass on this message? Thanks a lot. Steve Hutton
