Show 6: 21 October - Look-a-Likes

I can definitely see why Paul Keevil has been a winner of so many dog and owner look-a-like competitions. Paul's the one on the right by the way. A friend once told me that I resembled a guppy fish, after perusing google images I can somewhat embarrassingly say he was right! Unfortunately I've never seen posters anywhere for fish look-a-like competitions in my area so if you know of any happening anywhere do send me an application form.

Paul's Dandie Dinmont crusade prompted Lindsey to comment on our blog that there are only about 3 Sokoke cats in the UK and a mere 100 left worldwide. Where are those 3 cats? Have you got one? Let us know if you have and we can do a national survey.

Thanks to all our guests this week; the delightful Alexander McCall Smith, our poet Matt Harvey, Beverley Fulker who spoke about facial disfigurement, DCS Graham Shaw described his role as a cold case detective. Lozz filled us in on his Black Country Podcasts and Stella Duffy picked her Inheritance Tracks.

Don't forget, if you want to get on the programme with your own Inheritance Tracks or fancy yourself as a Guerilla Reporter you can do it - just get in touch here.

And, of course, you can listen again to this programme (21/10/2006).

All the best,

JP

I have owned Dandies for the past 30+ years. In that time, I have had other dogs that needed a home; but, have never found another breed that equals the devotion, kindness, charm and character of a Dandie. My first Dandie was acquired to combat my dog allergies. He was sent from Kansas City by Overhill Kennels ( MRs George Kirby) I asked if the dog would be good with young children and quiet enough for an old lady (my way of letting them know I wasn't wild about yapping.) Even though the dog was for a pet home, the most magnificent puppy arrived a few months later..riding up front on a TWA freight transport. Mrs Kirby was anxious to have Dandies represented on the East Coast as well as the West Coast where they were big in the acting world. Paul Lynde had Harry who sat in on Hollywood Squares I was later told. Charley was a huge success with children, at the club where he napped in his crate at the edge of the tennis court daily, and as a kind family pet and companion. The Dandies that followed were all great friends. Our latest is a lovely female that I had spayed (a regret). She showed successfully with her breeder as a puppy; but, as sold to us when we once again could not find a successor to our last Dandie. Ashley is a doll, hunts chipmunks, stays away from the wild creatures that roam on our farm (coyotes) and loves life. She gave my husband great comfort and devotion during a 3 yr battle with brain cancer, walking with us one pace behind him whenever he went on a walk or moved from room to room. She slept by his side of the bed all day sometimes when chemo was especially difficult. All in all, this is the greatest breed for families, singles, apt dwellers, city dwellers and country folk. To lose this breed will be a tragedy. Anyone know any breeders with a puppy or young adult? Harrods was not very helpful. By the way, I have large eyes-but don't really look like my Ashley unless we are both looking particularly repentant. Kate Hunt

Kate - your love of Dandies shines through your post and it isn't the first time we have heard of Dandies nursing during serious illness.

In the UK we don't sell Dandie puppies in stores and actually I am quite relieved that Harrods didn't help. One puppy bought from a store makes room for more puppies and encourages puppy millers to replace it. We breeders have more respect for our Dandies and their breeding than that - with most only having a maximum of three litters in their lifetime.

Caring owners will find a Dandie eventually and the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club of America is the place to start perhaps for you. They, like us in the UK, now realise that we can't keep all the Dandie Dinmont Terriers in the world exclusive to us and that we need new human breeders too to ensure the survival and revival of our Breed.
