The pompous twerp suggests that Radio 4 should face a commercial challenger, because it is irretrievably lost in the past and isn't giving the modern audience what it wants.

He goes on to list all the failing programmes, which includes ISIHAC (by implication since he names the 18:30 comedy half-hour amongst the pet hates).

PM gets a back-handed compliment by being left out of the list of the named-and-shamed.

Just off to a quite corner of the beach, where I can vent my spleen at a camel.

Molly, Molly, don't be apprehensive! The Beach is all things to all (wo)men, and you're very very welcome.... It is your beach as much as anyone's.

No procedure, really - but if you want a drink, or anything else, just help yourself. There is a bar (name for Nick Clarke - or Nock, as Fred's decided to call it today), and perfect weather. The only procedure, if it can be called that, is that regular froggers (that's PM Blogspeak for bloggers) hang out here and relax. And are friendly.

    Good morning everyone,

Hope you are all in fine form this lovely sparkly morning!

Hello Jonnie - thanks for sharing Chris's reply. It was very kind of him to take the time and my son will be delighted to know Mr Mopple is on his way back soon. As for panto - I am round t'other side of M25 so will not make it, however I am taking my 2 little ones and daddy (who is an older daddy and at a times is like a cross between Victor Meldrew and Alf Garnett!!), to see Cbeebies Live at Wembley Arena! Daddy can't wait LOL!! As for the new Jackanory, sadly I have not seen it yet - unfortunately am still working full time for the next couple of months - but the trailers look superb and I sincerely hope it does succeed in dragging older kids away from their PSPs. My children are 4 and 2 so very much target market for Cbeebies. As for storytelling on there I think it is of a very high quality and very reasonable quantity. The quality of programmes on the channel in general is very good with a good balanced mixture of very informative and educational programmes - e.g. we loved the Cbeebies Spring and Autumn Watch programmes. As far as storytelling goes, programmes such as Story Makers and the bedtime story always get my two's attention when at times I struggle to and we love to snuggle up on the sofa and watch and listen together, its great "chill out" time! And of course, there is good old Mr Mopple!

Anyway apologies for waffling on (particularly to the non-cbeebies folk here which is probably just about everyone!!), I just wanted to leave my thoughts. Right off to do some work, back later鈥..

    Anyway, just to annoy a few people right now I am going to quickly attack a bundle of mail that I should of dealt with on Friday. Basically it is a simple enough task which I normally carry out on a daily basis and will do going forward. I can visibly see that a lot of it can be binned, so essentially not much of a chore.     Molly (4);
Welcome to the beach. I'm not a regular visitor myself, although I pop up from time to time. I'll give you my take, others will have different opinions.

Sometimes it is fairly quiet, but you can leave your footprints for others to find later on. Othertimes it is the home for a real party, with constant gossip, rumour, innuendo, chit-chat and so on.

There is no direct answer to your question about finding your way. The beach is a moveable feast, literally. It will be renewed by our Lord and master Mr. Edward de Mair each Monday morning. This is because we have found in the past that when the number of posts exceeds about 600 the entire thing becomes unwieldy and unstable.

If this were a forum (and it sort of is because we post responses to each other, not just to Eddie, hence our term for ourselves 'Froggers', a combination of forum and blogger) then the beach would be the off-topic area. It's a tropical location, no matter the time of year it's always warm and pleasant there. Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular and the evenings are balmy. It has a number of different locations; the Nick Clarke waterfornt bar; the smokers corner; Fido's Run for the dog-walkers; and others.

Froggers often leave bottles / glasses of their favourite tipple on the bar for others to sample, not to mention big / small eats. For example last Thursday I left a bottle of Talisker and some crudites there, which were well received in some quarters.

There is a herd of camels who frequent the sands, which froggers are very fond of. Lately a bunch of reindeer have showed up from who-knows-where. There are sun-loungers, so you can take it easy and catch some rays. Quite often the late-night attendees will have a barbie.

It's a fun place, with only one real rule; Be nice to each other. To answer another point you raise; we are ALL chums here.

The real debate happens on the other threads. The beach is a place for banter, whimsy, relaxation and friendship, where jarring comments are not particularly welcome. There are certain very mild protocols, which you tend to pick up as you go along. I broke one (unwittingly) last week when I tried to give the dog-walkers a different area of the beach beyond the rockpools. I was soon made to see the error of my ways when it was pointed out that Fido's Run already existed for them and a new alternative was unwelcome.

Other than that, slip your shoes off, feel the sand between your toes, relax and enjoy. You'll find a selection of fine Bordeaux wines behind the bar today; a Chateau Ausone (St.-Emilion Grand Cru Classe A, 1982); a very nice dry white from the Graves; and a half-bottle of Chateau d'Yquem 1995 (I can't afford a whole bottle, sorry) for those who like sweet whites. Help yourself. I've left a selection of biscuits there too.

This evening for anyone who fancies a 'Digestif' after supper I'll leave a bottle of Quinta de Vargellas 1987 port behind when I finish today. Together with some Roquefort and a pack of Bath Olivers.

His Dad enjoyed the slideshow so much that as soon as it had finished he wanted the whole thing over again. He had to settle for a running show on his TV whilst everybody ate, then we popped the screen back up, fired up the projector and let him have it....

Also celebrating, cautiously, because SO's Dad (aged 72) had major surgery on Friday morning and appears (touching wood) to have come through it alright. For which all who know him are most profoundly grateful.

I think we are in danger of making too much of this. We've known for months that some personating was occurring. I don鈥檛 see how it is possible to stop it without making the blog very proscriptive and almost unworkable.

I think it best that we let the subject drop and just be aware that the possibility always exists. I know that none of the regular froggers will want to deliberately cause problems for anyone else. It may be that the more we talk about it the more likely it is to happen.

No, we don't. Emphatically. I whole-heartedly agree with your sentiments. The focus (pardon pun) of the day should be the couple and the celebration.

Our philosophy flows from this thought. We want to create as little impact on the flow of the wedding day as possible, so that what we capture is the real deal, as-it-happened. We don't want to put our imprint on the proceedings by directing things, or causing them to happen.

We work in a (by-and-large) flash-free journalistic kind of style. Sometimes called Reportage. It *can be* hit and miss. Between SO and self we'll pretty much always shoot between 1500 & 2000 images at an all-day wedding. And we always work as a pair.

Around 15 - 20% of the images are no good for one reason or another, motion blur, lousy exposures etc. Another proportion will be double-shots, where we shoot two in quick succession as something happens and select the best one to show. We also get two different angles on the formal parts of the day, such as the ceremony or the speeches. So again we'll often choose the 'better' one (which for us means the one that best captures look, feel, emotion, buzz, not necessarily the one that is most technically correct!).

We want the couple to be the first to see their pictures, not any wedding guest who happens to be passing.

We aim to show the couple around 300 - 350 images at their viewing, as a slideshow set to music. We encourage them to get family & friends over so they can all enjoy the experience. It often ends up as being part of a whole lunch & afternoon session. The one on Saturday lasted four hours, although the show was only 32 minutes long for one run through. We take along a laptop, LCD projector and a portable cinescreen, so they see it BIG. Add suitable music to the mixture and tears are *almost* taken foregranted.

Anyway here I am back late from Aberdeen. We should have come back on Sunday but the ferry was cancelled because of bad weather so we had to stay an extra night, must check travel insurance to see if we are covered. Normally the next ferry isn't until tonight, but the company put on an extra one yesterday although we weren't home until 2 this morning.

Before I forget Happy Birthday Mary, and many more to come!

Decided to catch up on blogs; started with the one my husband's cousin has been keeping during a long trip to their mutual Polish relations. Discovered she has made some very hurtful comments about my late father in law and also told some downright lies about him and am now both cross and upset. She has in the course of this blog taken various swipes at my husband's family, despite knowing that his two brothers and I all read it, well I skim it, and also despite the fact that she stayed with my mother in law in Devon for a week during the course of this trip.
I can cope with that, but my father in law isn't here to defend himself and I am really uspet. I tried to comment but you have to register as a user which seems exceesive given that it's an australian blog host thing and all I want to do is post some factual corrections.
So I have e-mailed the blog host company for suggestions as to what I can do. Now of course all the things I was going to zap through today - unpacking, correspondence, overseas christmas cards, I just can't concentrate on.
I was going to write something horrible about Lucyna but I won't pollute the beach. If anyone has left over hugs they'd be welcome as would some of that white Graves (what good taste
someone had to bring that over to the beach) if there's any of that left.
Welcome Molly, hope you enjoy it here with us, we're very easy going, friendly and supportive.

Oh dear, Depressed (78). You sound like I often feel! So here's a big huuuuuuuuuug.

It happens quite often that I've nothing much to say or I'm feeling a bit quiet, or I'm just too busy - but I love being able to skim through the conversations here and on the December threads to keep in touch with you all. I especially loved reading Si's thoughts about wedding photography. My two girls both got married 3 years ago, one in June and one in September - they have married fantastic young men who are now my own sons (though they do have lovely mums of their own as well). We had great photos but also a DVD made of each wedding which I love to watch and cry buckets just cos I can't believe there could ever be two more perfect days....

Aaahhh! It's nice here in the sunshine. I've brought some shiraz along today but I'm afraid I haven't got a pipe long enough to reach Fifi's house, so come and have a slurp over here, Fi.

My Christmas wish would be a magic pack of cigarettes which I could smoke without hurting anyone and no-one would complain. Don't tell Basil or Appy will get lured back into the argument.

Forget that last wish anyway. I don't think you can get it at Argos.

The Pope, a schoolboy and George Bush are in a plane. Suddenly the pilot suffers a heart attack and the craft takes a nosedive. As the engines sputter, the three passengers try to stay calm.
'Well,' says the Pope, 'we have established that none of us can land this baby, so we're going to have to jump for it.'
'But there are only two parachutes,' says the boy, pointing to a pile of bundles by the exit.
Without hesitating, Bush rushes over to them, takes one and shouts: 'I am the President of the United States of America. I am the world's most powerful leader. And apart from that, I am the most intelligent President in the history of my country. I have a responsibility to my people not to die.'
With that, he leaps out of the plane.
Now the Pope turns calmly to the schoolboy and says: 'I am already old. I have already lived my life as a good person and a priest. There is a place for me in heaven. I insist you take the last parachute.'
'No need,' says the boy, 'The most intelligent President in the history of his country has taken my schoolbag...'

Johnny (especially as Jack Sparrow) and George C are always right at the top anyway. How about the following for inclusion? -
Jimmy Nesbitt, only when he's Tommy Murphy though.
    Jack Davenport (improving with age).

It has taken me three weeks to learn how to do links! But it is really easy when you know how. Anne's guide to the blog on Jonnies site gives all the details, but don't copy the quotes " " - use your own.

It took over 2 hours from me writing that message until it appeared. And it then appears before posts that have been there for more than an hour. I don't really think I can be bothered with this any more.

adminannie (77) remember that mean people are just unhappy, and don't mind sharing it with you, the unhappiness I mean. Families do all have their own version of a narrative but why bother posting all that stuff on as public as space on a blog, knowing you would be reading it. I think they counted on your reading it, and would probably delete any comment you made, but a calm confrontation when they return and your anger has subsided? Gloves off mate!

Frances O (47) there will be a bed, & glad you have somewhere for mum, nobody is allowed to let her go home if she can't. It will be ok, there is always a bed sooner than you think, & not only because someone dies! Well worth saying just in case you feel guilty about wishing for a bed. Some people do go home from care homes, some find another place would meet their needs better for all kinds of reasons; often medical, and some people just change homes; perhaps to be nearer family. It will happen, have faith. I have one piece of advice, which may be redundant, but I offer it because older adults who can fund themselves can find themselves more vulnerable than others, it is always worth including social services in the process. If you've found the home and are paying for it, they won't actually do anything for you, but their statutory protection is invaluable.

Anne P (33) Lovely to read your post. I don't know about how anyone does a wedding and manages to make it add up to the average price of 拢25k, with or without Simon's photography! I'm not having photos, memories linger on without a prompt, and I only saw one set of wedding photos I liked, possibly because they were black and white and stunningly natural. More so than any kind of reportage I've seen on offer here, oh they were taken in Italy, which might have made a difference because the background was blissfully Tuscan.

Simon (14) your guide is absolutely brilliant, and I only disagree with you on politics! Your offering this evening "for anyone who fancies a 'Digestif' after supper I'll leave a bottle of Quinta de Vargellas 1987 port behind when I finish today. Together with some Roquefort and a pack of Bath Olivers." is so utterly civilised that I am feeling a bit guilty for telling you off about your Magaret Beckett having a great face for radio comment... No idea where I posted that though, so perhaps it will be overlooked...

No! Not at all! There is absolutely nothing wrong with men and women, gay or straight or bi, expressing their admiration for the appearance/personality/combination (and for me it is always the latter) of another human being. It's when appearnce/sex/gender is used as a weapon or a method of undermining (so linked to how well someone does their job, for instance) that it becomes inappropriate. Just saying that you find someone attractive is surely a compliment and I don't think anyone should be squeamish about it.

    (1) Don't forget to post any comments on Eddie's first posting on Monday, 11th December. Books currently being read are:
(Nostalgia) The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton
(Grown up stuff) My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult.

If you want to add to the fun by not revealing which book you are commenting on, I'm sure there will be no objection/

    (2) FYI - Unfortunately, I'm out of circulation over the weekend and into next week. I'm sure there'll be lots for me to catch up on when I get back to base a week today (I'm still around today and much of tomorrow). But I know I don't need to be here for it all to happen.

    (3) But I realise some of you will want to get started on another read. No clear consensus has come through on the suggestions made to date, so may I put forward the following:

(Nostalgia) Down with Skool - or any other Molesworth book, if you can't get hold of that one. And there's a great link if you're not familiar with the lad

which will give you a flavour of the books.

(Grown up stuff) Morse has been nominated by two people, and as Christmas is coming - and people's time therefore perhaps limited, etc. etc. - it would seem a good idea to have something 'light' like that, if you're happy with it. I suggest The Way through the Woods, chosen at random.

Alternatively, might I throw up an idea for consideration? How about A Christmas Carol by Dickens - I traditionally read this for many years in the run up to Christmas and found it very thought provoking as well and entertaining.

In view of Xmas, etc., I also suggest we have until December 31st to read this time.

Perhaps I could get some responses from you guys by midday tommorrow (Friday) and I'll post up here and on Jonnie's website.

    Thanks

A few weeks ago I got severely disenchanted with the Blog - probably not for the same reasons as you, but no matter. I said I was going and I meant it. A lot of very nice comments from regulars brought me back and although at times I still find it enormously frustrating, I鈥檓 really glad I did return.

I'm going to quote from somebody else - they know who they are and I ask for their forgiveness for quoting without their permission about their thoughts on the blog:
鈥 It's like having a bunch of intelligent, friendly, opinionated but (usually) gentle colleagues and friends around - one moves from the serious to the random to the important to the trivial and around again. The pleasure's in the mixture.鈥

This was at the tail end of a thread and probably most regulars had moved on and didn鈥檛 see it. But it really really had an effect on me and I鈥檝e held on to it through out the frustration I鈥檝e felt with the blog over the weeks. I find the vast majority of regular bloggers to be as described above. Sure, there are some of us who ramble on inanely, post too often and talk absolute xxxx (I鈥檓 trying not to get moderated).

But in every sphere, you get people like that. I compartmentalise (is that the correct word?) these people. I skim over their posts because I know the next one will be different. I filter them out as I鈥檓 sure others filter me out.

    Evening all,

Just a quick note to say following some earlier discussion hereabouts, I have taken the liberty of forwarding the great intro that Simon Worrall wrote for Molly at (14) to Eddie with the suggestion that it should be used as an intro to next week's beach.

Do hope you don't mind, Simon, as I had no way of asking you beforehand. I cut it very slightly to make it appropriate for any week. Don't know of course whether Eddie will actually use it, but I do think it would be useful to newcomers.

jonnie, the caveat about the PM Blog Extra was only because I'm not sure about protocols for Eddie advertising external sites.

Here is what I wrote to Eddie, do hope you are all ok with it:

    Hi Eddie,

Recently Simon Worrall provided a very good explanation of what the beach is all about for a newcomer called Molly.

As other froggers suggested it at the time, I am including below a, slightly edited, version which you might like to consider posting with each new week's beach by way of explanation for new folk. The original entry was (14) on 'This Week's Beach' for December 4th. I have added an extra line as a plug for jonnie's PM Blog Extra, but feel free to leave that out if you prefer.

Welcome to the beach. For new visitors, here鈥檚 a quick guide provided recently for Molly by Simon Worrall.

It has a number of different locations; the Nick Clarke waterfront bar; the smokers corner; Fido's Run for the dog-walkers; and others.

So slip your shoes off, feel the sand between your toes, relax and enjoy.

And by the way, if you are interested the froggers have also created their own site at .
