Prospects for Tuesday, 26 August, 2008

Stuart Denman | 12:19 UK time, Tuesday, 26 August 2008

Good morning. Fresh back from the bank holiday, the production team came in to the following e-mail from today's output editor, Dan. Do add your comments and suggestions below on , , , , and anything else that takes your interest today...

Hello all.

We have Gavin Esler and David Grossman in Denver, and a very good line up of guests - including Terry McAuliffe and Obama's half-sister. I'll explain the packages and interviews that we have - there is quite a lot of production work involved at this end.

A huge amount is now riding on Brown's economic recovery plan for this autumn. The Unions and a large number of Labour MPs (and some junior Government members) are openly lobbying for a windfall tax but what are the Chancellor's options and what is he likely to do? Which guests would you like on this?

The eBay data loss story is interesting - how could we move this on? We should watch the markets - especially in the US where Lehman Brothers seems to be under some pressure.

What else?

See you at 10.30.

Dan

Hows about doing a report on Jeremy Paxmans Edinburgh TV festival interview. Todays Daily mail, ( best paper you will ever read and its only 50p) it has an interesting Rod Liddle take on Paxo's concerns about the white middle class within the broadcasting media possibly suffering the same fate as the dinosaurs. Liddle, writing in the Mail, has a long dig at the Charterhouse educated Pax but pulls out many points of truth in this candid interview seen by a "bunch of jabbering media monkeys", but Liddle saves most of his venom for the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖs overt and overzealous embrace of ethnic diversity with lines such as " Your local ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ news programmes will have more ethnic minority reporters than you can shake a stick at, even if you live in an area that is almost exclusively white"...now i haven't seen a video of this interview nor a transcript but i'll soon be doing a google search to see what Jeremy was actually saying.

Rod Liddle ended with this comment:

"So Jeremy Paxman may have hit upon a small truth in his bizarre interview in Edinburgh. The thing he didn't seem to understand was that it is all down to people like him"......i would say the same thing about Rod Liddle myself, the only difference is Liddle has woken up and Paxman is just waking up.

Jeremy Paxman is right, these are hard days to be a white, middle class man, whether in the police (not fast track for them) or the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ.
Actually, I couldn't care less who reads the news or presents items, providing they speak English in a correct, grammatical manner and do not have irritating facial expressions to emote the news (like Natasha Kaplinsky). Also, one would prefer that they didn't sound hoarse like Kirsty Wark. Racially, they can be black, white, or all the combinations in between, but lord preserve us from accents such as those of Jonathan Ross or Jade Goody.
Paxman, however is right. Count how many ethnic women and men there are reading ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ News and compare with how many white, middle class men there are. If ethnic groups comprise 18-20% of the population, they are still heavily over-represented. Just watch ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ News at 6 and the Regional News Magazine. These are mainly staffed by erudite young ethnic women, who could put many of the UK born white women announcers to shame.
I hope this posting will not be suppressed as being rascist, but who knows, we live in such edgey times.

thecookieducker (#3) and Phoenixarisen (#4) Summers, Buerck, Paxman, and many others keep stating the obvious Not that it will make one iota of difference of course, just add a little spice. It's all about reinforcing , and the controllers know that females (gatherers) buy more stuff and have a penchant for both marketing and shopping.

Another sad sign of the times I'm afraid, but then, I'm no fan of 'market-forces' or anarchism, which makes me rather politically incorrect or worse allegedly.

  • Comment number 6.

Jeremy have you noticed not many black faces on Newsnight ....

  • Comment number 7.

JadedJean(#5) - actually that is a very valid point about women being gatherers and buying more stuff - so obviously marketing/retailers love women far more than men and will demand more women in the media.
There's an article in today's Daily Telegraph

where Channel 4's Krishnan Guru-Murthy states "he thought Paxman made his remarks "with a twinkle in his eye". But he said he did not know why the esteemed interviewed had made them, or if Paxman genuinely believed what he had said."

Perhaps Jeremy had said the whole thing as a joke!

  • Comment number 8.

i would have thought the target audience for NN was white m/c men? The Ambridge Dog and Duck crowd?

I'm a bit concerned about the UK govt shrill reaction to the 'independence' of the breakaway regions even though their independence to choose their own foreign policy would look in doubt.

To get into the nationalist mindset maybe a re watching of the Triumph of the Will might remind people what sort of mindset nationalism breeds. Its on ytube with english subtitles.

Mistress76uk (#6) "Perhaps Jeremy had said the whole thing as a joke!"

About as likely as Michael Buerk, Larry Summers, or Helmuth Nyborg joking methinks.

The main difference between the original Bolshevik (or French) violent revolution and that of the New Left Socialist International's reforms today is how they bring about the removal of those they consider to be the ruling/obstructing class. The modern way is through slow reform (Human Rights and Equalities i.e. Political Correctness) which targets statism (foreign and domestic) to maximise merchantising. One can see the effects simply by looking at the empirical data, and the media anomaly of the sexes is just one of the most salient. As this is an insidious process most people don't take it seriously enough in their lifetime, and that's the invidious part.

    COLD WAR?

bookhimdano (#8) It was fine when the Baltic states, Poland and Ukraine etc declared independence from 'The Evil Empire' wasn't it? Consider Lisbon today creating a binding military and economic 'nationalism' for the EU-27 (and beyond). Then think of the SCO as another rival, 'Democratic-Centralist' superstate.

Lisbon ensures the existence of hoards of debt-enslaved consumers for private companies/banks.

    It's all getting a bit like 1984ish isn't it?

That is definitely a matter of opinion!

No 3- Daily Mail- "the best paper you'll ever read"

Are you being ironic or is this really a curse?
Even at 50p it's hardly good value as it is rough to the touch, and at my local One Stop I can buy a big roll which is nice and clean!

    That brings back old memories.
Going across the yard to the earth closet and sitting reading the old newspapers, no soft toilet paper those days.
I wonder how the modern younger generation would cope if we had to go back to those conditions, I wonder how I would cope!

  • Comment number 14.

It's funny how NATO seems so enthusiastic in pointing fingers at Russian military efforts in the Caucasus, all the while avoiding any intentions of answering questions relating to the annexation of Kosovo from Serbia, a scenario that illustrates a mirror-like reflection of events in comparison.

Quite frankly, these double standards are making me feel giddy. I can't wait to see who the true strategists are in this world. I feel that debate has become truly rotten, as if one side actually believes that they have secured some kind of global harmony.

    Euggh.

  • Comment number 15.

It appears that the western approach towards world dominance, namely offering large subsidies to the individuals who support the philosophy of neo liberalism, while telling the non-supporters to 'shut up' and 'sit down' is about to blow up in their faces.

    THE CURSE OF KIRSTY

Will no one rid Kirsty of her turbulent speech? Before long I shall have to watch with the sub-text on. This is quite bizarre. We of elderly aural kit naturally struggle, but what of those for whom English is a second language (as, admittedly, it is with Kirsty)? Surely by now THEY are protected from incoherent ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ presenters by some equality law?

it all depends what you want.. If you desire smooth to the touch ....can i suggest Heat magazine...or the Guardian.

  • Comment number 19.

    18 thecookieducker

You started this - how about the Daily Mirror to reflect what's happening.

  • Comment number 20.

    No 18.

I want a newspaper that reports the facts, and that has intelligent, thoughtful opinion writers- the indy, the guardian and the times all fit that description, but the mail certainly does not.

Oh, and I also want a paper that doesn't have a ridiculous obsession with waste disposal/ alternate weekly collections.
