lit203.jpgRussian Revelations
In their first ever face to face meeting, held at the G8 today, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told Gordon Brown that he wanted relations between Britain and Russia to return to a "normal state," but Newsnight has revelations that could make that very unlikely. Our Diplomatic Editor Mark Urban reveals that MI5 believe they thwarted an attempt last June to kill Boris Berezovsky, the London based critic of the then president Vladimir Putin. Whitehall sources also believe that the murder of another Kremlin critic, Alexander Litvinenko, was carried out with the backing of the Russian state. Read more on this story on our Mark Urban's blog.

Glasgow East By-Election
Our Political Editor Michael Crick is in Glasgow East ahead of the crucial by-election later this month. Glasgow East is one of Labour's safest seats - could it really be vulnerable? The leader of the Scottish Nationalists and Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond, joins us live.

Women Bishops
How will women Bishops be introduced into the Church of England, and could tonight's Synod vote in York lead to an exodus of traditionalist clergy? We'll speak to a female archdeacon and a serving bishop.

It would appear that Brown has additionally shot himself in the foot on the food waste spin, especially when inferring that BOGOF offers be withdrawn from supermarkets.

Perhaps Cameron thinks that he can get away with saying anything in a seat where he is likely to lose his deposit. His Corporate Nazi position on welfare reform may erode his chances two years down the road. Many ten bob fat cat Corporate Nazi voters may change their mind when their job comes under severe threat. I suspect that most people know someone who is disabled, perhaps not obviously to the casual observer but in any case not fit to " work " in a civilized society.

Malick complains about the Muslims being treated like the Jews of Nazi Germany, but even the Muslims don't have at least one mainstream political party using them as scapegoats for societies ills.

Many became disabled simply by working too hard when at work, in which case perhaps society owes them the dignity of early retirement. Life is hardly a bed of roses on straight incapacity benefit, 100 quid a week ( with NI contributions bonus ), not even enough to keep warm and dry and have a full belly most of the time. Perhaps HFW's chickens are better treated in some respects.

Paxman is a disgrace ... why can't he and Kirsty Wark put aside their personal loathing of Alex Salmond and do a professional job for once?

Cairns was given plenty of time to answer his (easy) questions, by contrast Salmond was faced with constant barracking from Paxman. Fortunately Salmond thrives in such conditions and still put in a strong performance despite the obvious bias publicly displayed by the interviewer.

Lets clear this up once and for all, the FSB would not be involved, as they are the domestic Russian secret service like MI5 here , whereas SVR are the external secret service like our SIS (MI6).

Now lets look at this story "MI5 believe they thwarted", and I believe I'm the second coming of Jesus Christ, belief means nothing, evidence is all that counts, all we have here is the security services wanting some more money so they engage in such blatant black propaganda to make themselves look good. Next they'll be telling us Iraq has WMD and David Kelly was a suicide.

As for Litvinenko, remember he converted to Islam, and was poisoned by one of the ingredients used for the initiator of a Soviet suitcase nuclear weapon, so what's more likely that he, a man who no one in Russia gave a damn about was killed by an elaborate Russian plan or that he was accidentally poisoned while handling a component of an ex Soviet suitcase nuke destined for our shores?

    MARK URBAN on CHARLES WHEELER

On Friday's blog Mark wrote: 'His attitude to officialdom was not one of CHILDISH SCORN OR CONTEMPT . .' Who could he possibly have had in mind pattymkirkwood? (#2) It is hard to watch isn't it. Sort of 'go to your room' stuff. I endorse your whole post.
All is now showbiz. I seem to remember Gibbon said something similar about Rome.
    Whatever happened to Rome?

Alex Salmond should just refuse to go on Newsnight - nobody would blame him !

I usually defend Jeremy but the Alex Salmon interview was nothing short of harassment. If you had an issue with Salmon you lost it because Paxman went in too hard. I was waiting for a reply but all I hears was the next fussilade from Jeremy. Look at the tape Jeremy.

Its very generous of Newsnight to continue with its campaign of presenting Berezovsky as someone deserving of our sympathy. I imagine a rich man would have to pay an awful lot of money for the sort of PR provided by a whole item to himself last night's programme. Was Mark Urban out of the country last time Berezovsky was airing these claims or did he think we might have forgotten them?

    HURRAH FOR THE CHICAGO BOYS

nortongriffiths (#7) Are not Boris and friends batting for the 'Axis of Good'?

Would we be able to recognize and contain the 'Axis of Evil' without their benevolent guidance?

  • Comment number 9.

Whenever Alex Salmond is on with Jeremy, it is always priceless. So he was asked a few questions he couldn't answer properly, so what?

  • Comment number 10.

The Axis of Evil is in the eye of the beholder. There is no good in Boris Berezovsky that I can see.

This comment was removed because the moderators found it broke the house rules. Explain.

It is tradition to give said politician a theoretical chance of answering the questions he/she is aksed ... before being shouted down by the supposed "interviewer".
