Dubstep Week - Day 1

Post categories: ,听,听

Mistajam | 22:12 UK time, Monday, 7 September 2009

All this week on 1Xtra is Dubstep week - I get the chance to represent a genre that is currently DOING IT for me and for an increasing amount of people at the moment.

In order to know where we're going we have to know where we've come from so tonight (Monday) has been all about 'The Roots Of Dubstep':

Dubstep PIONEER hooked us up with an amazing dark garage/proto-dubstep mix..

El-B & Noodles came into the studio to talk about the days & the history of Dubstep as they know it (shouts to Sarah Soulja!)

And Radio 1's First Lady of Dubstep Mary Anne Hobbs broke down how she fell in love with the genre and in turn introduced the world to it with her seminal

First off...dubstep is my new jones too. I really see a fusion of hip-hop and dubstep taking off (Hank Shocklee and to an extent, Snoop Dogg, already know about dubstep).

That said, it's extremely disappointing that we here in the US cannot listen to the podcast. 1Xtra is one of my favorite online radio streams to listen to and while I'm sure there is some type of legal restraint preventing availability in the US, at least consider putting up a disclaimer on the web site so that one does not waste time streaming a MP3 saying "sorry, but you are not from here so no listening for you." What's ironic is that I have Mary Ann Hobbs' original groundbreaking show (Dubstep Wars), downloaded and with a permanent slot on the ipod.

Aside from this, I really hope that 1Xtra creates a permanent Dubstep show. I want to hear some mashups between hip-hop and dubstep.
Like Eminem spitting over Sukh Knights' Beneath Your Blouse and/or Knightlife.

    Thanx!

I'll respond to the above comment from MisFitDubStep with a snippet from another blog that addresses the same view -->

"The last thing I鈥檒l say is to the haters both in press and in the forums is that a musical style is made to evolve. Dubstep itself evolved from dark garage and is currently an alamgam of many different genres of music. To claim that something like the introduction of American hiphop MCs to the sound of dubstep will 鈥渃ommercialize鈥 or 鈥渞uin鈥 the sound is shortsighted. This sound is a new dimension in dubstep, yet another sound that falls under the name of 鈥渄ubstep.鈥 The exact reason this music is so magical to me is because of the variety of sounds that are all 鈥渄ubstep鈥 so adding another dimension just means for more diverse mixes. Tell Miles Davis that by recording Bitches Brew he ruined Jazz. Tell Elvis that his sound ruined the blues. Tell Grandmaster Flash that mixing breaks ruined funk. And if you鈥檙e really not feeling it then just don鈥檛 play it."

To expand on the comment about preference for the 'underground', understand that true old-school/backpack underground hip-hop heads hate the commercialized sound just as much as the next genres' fans.

I'll tell you in a second that:

Jean Grae > Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown
Justus League > Any Jim Jones/Camron-led crew
MURS > 50 Cent and similar artists.

The list goes on but you see the point. I think what some people are really saying is that they don't want vocals on top of their wobble.
