MI5 files, the Nazi's "Fourth Reich" and nationalists in Cornwall

Graham Smith | 16:32 UK time, Monday, 4 April 2011

I know the messenger will be blamed for the message, but the story is too good to ignore. So hearty congratulations to today's for telling us how French collaborator Olivier Mordrelle spilled the beans about Nazi plans for a Fourth Reich following his capture and interrogation towards the end of the Second World War.

The Telegraph quotes from MI5 files now released at the National Archives:

"Source states that this last meeting had a strange air of unreality. He had the feeling that last minute plans were being made in words and on paper when all the persons present were secretly preoccupied with the idea of how they could best save their skins."

The Telegraph continues:
"Mordrelle had performed a number of roles for the occupiers, culminating in being appointed French representative for post-war activities by the Nazi party's intelligence agency, the Sicherheitsdienst. He was also said to have had contact with nationalist movements in Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Cornwall."

In the absence of moderator explanation for that post being 'referred for further consideration' nor any explanation for acceptance of that referral, here it is in two parts. Perhaps that will help with identifying the problem.

    Part 1:

Apparently, you may just be scratching the surface of Nazi designs on The Celtic Nation And Duchy Of Cornwall (& The Duchess!), Mr Smith:

    Part 2:

You appear to be more than a little behind the curve on that interesting subject, Mr Smith.
Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose - it's a well known fact that ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Cornwall Pheoenix Wharf staffers short of ideas, feeling out on the edge in the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio not-Cornwall anglo-centric-imperialist-colonial-limbo-land-peripheral-vacuum or wanting to get up-to-the-minute info on burning issues frequently turn to C24 as a valuable resource for ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio anti-Cornwall ‘journalists’. It's just a pity you all put up the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖlone blinkers when truths are told. Put bbc+radio+cornwall into the C24 Discussion Board - - search tool and you will get some.

Oh Dear! Not quoting the Nazis again as "proof" of how cruel the those English are?

  • Comment number 6.

Apparently not, Slimslad. Mr Smith merely appears to be scraping the bottom of the hearsay barrel on this occasion. In the interests of what and whom exactly is a bit of a mystery. Ingénue tourist journalism perhaps?

  • Comment number 7.

Hardly a 'story too good to ignore' - unless there is a personal/institutional agenda.

  • Comment number 8.

In any case, is it not in fact more likely that the then right royal Nazi sympathiser Duke of Cornwall (later to become the exiled 'Duke of Windsor') encouraged von Ribbentrop in the idea that he could take over the Duchy - after all, our then waster Duke (plus ça change) appears to have even shared his girl friend with old Ribbers.

  • Comment number 9.

These Nazi sympathisers came from all walks of life, as well as royalty.
Some English wore wore Nazi uniforms, as did some French and Breton separatists, even the founder of the Celtic League once had a death sentence over his head for his Nazi connections. History makes uncomfortable reading, sometimes.

  • Comment number 10.

Indeed it does, Slimslad. Mr Smith appears to have been over-enthusiastically clutching at straws with which to tickle to death those progressives who are moving on from his Retro 'Glorious Empire' Major Bufton-Tufton world view.

  • Comment number 11.

    Some thoughts for you Graham:

A link to your own "blog", CornishRep?
Proves exactly what? Gives your comments some "authority", or acts as some sort of "proof"?
