MK considers its future

Graham Smith | 11:45 UK time, Friday, 12 November 2010

Bodmin's the place to be tomorrow for Mebyon Kernow's annual conference. Recommendations from the top table include a plan to contest at least 50 seats in the 2013 Cornwall Council elections, to contest the 2014 Euro elections (deposit currently £5,000) and every Cornish constituency at the 2015 General election (deposit currently £500 each.) Before anyone scoffs, I should point out that despite the huge cost of campaigning, most political parties, MK included, actually make a profit out of elections thanks to the increased opportunities for raising political awareness and fundraising.

There you go again, Mr Smith, with your petty stiletto innuendo.
Why should anyone want to 'scoff' at political aspiration?
Just let them get on with it.

So the deposits need to be put up then don’t they? If MK made a profit out of its last general election performance, we can lookout for a few more clowns jumping on the bandwagon.

    Or perhaps

The deposit for a general election is five HUNDRED pounds not £5,000

    Deposits all round!

  • Comment number 6.

The circus is in town I see, don’t they do MK proud

  • Comment number 7.

Ah, the animals have arrived, though I thought they were frowned upon these days in circuses

  • Comment number 8.

Where is there for MK to go? They have always had a problems with their highly socialist "left of Labour", highly Green agenda, which people obviously haven't bought into.

They are not riding on a wave of Cornish nationalism. They get tarred with the same brush as the more ""radical" Cornish nationalists, so their image as a serious party suffers.

Every time there's a Cornish Nationalist stunt support for MK recedes. The "Ban the English Flag" campaign certainly did them no favours, as they were associated with it, and thus offended many in Cornwall who consider themselves both English and Cornish.

Their candidates are, how can I put this kindly, not exactly media attractive.

    Their policies are wishy washy.

Of course we will soon get a Cornish nationalist on here telling me me views are all wrong, and that MK gets support for its nationalist/left wing/Green polices and that nationalist campaigns are effective and draw in support for MK.

And that is why they will never be elected, they are stuck in the past and self deluding!

  • Comment number 9.

The way politics have gone and are going anything is possible, the longer it goes until the next general election the better the chances are for any party other than the big 3, so don’t write off anyone least of all MK.

Yes that is the state that politics are sadly in today.

4: Apologies for the typo, now corrected. General election deposits are indeed £500.
