Councillors' allowances back again

Graham Smith | 11:50 UK time, Tuesday, 12 October 2010

Next week's Cornwall Council meeting will once again debate In these times of austerity etc I very much doubt that many voices will be raised in favour of an increase. The issue will then go into the long grass until the 2011/12 financial year.

I have considerable sympathy for those councillors who really do work very hard for an hourly rate which is below the minimum wage. There are some, of course, who don't work quite so hard. Here is a zero-cost suggestion: halve the number of councillors and double the allowances paid to the remainder, achieving at a stroke a more efficient, professional class of local politician.

Controversial? Certainly. And I hear some complaining that the "wrong" people would get elected. Possibly - but don't we always get the government we deserve?

Quarter would be more in keeping with the times

Actually, being serious you raise a very good point,Why do we need all these cllrs, most of them have no qualifications beyond being elected, how many of them have actually run a business(some I know failed in running their business and then became cllrs),most have no knowledge or experience that is relevant, one blogger on the tourist panel claimed a background in tourism, turned out hed run a fish and chip shop.... others see it as a nice add on to a pension, with a Cabinet system most of them are little more than unqualified social workers, they sign up for every committee they can to get mileage etc, lets leave it to the professionals.,do we need county level cllrs, its been proved that we didnt need district ones, why not as you say get rid of half of them, but I see no reason to double their allowance, its not meant to be a career or wage,if cclrs dont like the pay and conditions-resign,someone else will stand I,m sure..

"….one blogger on the tourist panel claimed a background in tourism, turned out hed run a fish and chip shop…"

And we all know who that is, the northerner radicalised by MK in an attempt to pretend not to be bigots an image hard to shake when so many from MK keep using BNP mantras, he was also the one publishing pictures of extremists graffiti.

What value do Cllrs bring, would the best saving be to remove them all? They clearly add no value to CCC and if they did why do we pay so much for the management when all the auditors clearly said they were failing to bring value

Could I please ask Trembath not to stalk my comment you have almost every other thread to fight people on, I am bored with your negative attitude, I just want to make comments free from your cussing

    It's called freedom of speech.
The comments you make, are, more often than not, a combination of insult and abuse. You use every opportunity to drag Cornish nationalism into every thread, including this one, so that you can repeat your insults and abuses ad nauseum. In a thread about Cornwall Council, you quite happily take the opportunity to post your bile about a Parish councillor, and Mebyon Kernow.
What makes you think you have the right to make such offensive and insulting comments, but others do not have the right to object. You are a typical bully, you hit out freely, but object when someone hits back.
You claim to be "bored with" my "negative attitude", but quite frankly, I have yet to see anything positive about yours.
The answer to your "request" lies with you.

One person here drags Cornish nationalism down into the playground with endless claims of offence for a movement that does not exist or is about the same size of the tooting popular front. All Trembath want is for someone to feel sorry for him for holding the twisted views he does, if he does not want to ridiculed then he needs to stop making idiotic comments and holding radical views only seen on the fringe of society.

I have respect for real nationalists who are able to link words together without seeking control or threats of being mistreated, I would go as far as to say that the nationalist movement finds everything about Trembath deeply embarrassing, if these moronic fights by trmbath continue I will look for other blogs to read, every dam comment is pure unconstructive that he makes in his attempt to control and give himself worth

This is also my last comment to Trembath

rickracoon Stephen is the supplier of MK Fish n chips who likes to represent Cornish nationalism on blogs and seeks to divide even though he was born outside Cornwall and only moved here 2 years ago

I like to think of him as easily lead, no doubt he was once Jesus knocking door to door up north

    If only.

Why do they need a payrise when they get 5% discount at the supermarket?

It's about time people had some of recourse for councillors exploiting the chore they do. They often fly under the radar yet are milking the system like Heifers who skipped lunch.
