See-through Cornish tartan

Graham Smith | 09:20 UK time, Tuesday, 7 September 2010

The coalition got a last night, with all six of Cornwall's MPs voting in favour of the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill. All six voted in favour of a measure which would abolish Cornwall's political border with Devon. That's something to ponder the next time a candidate tells you he or she will always put Cornwall ahead of party loyalties (although Labour's opposition to the Bill has more to do with protecting its northern territorities than a recenty discovered interest in Cornish separatism.)

The Bill will now be considered by a committee of the whole House of Commons, with proceedings having to be completed in five days, with a further two days for the Third Reading.

That majority of 52 looks quite solid until you consider that about 45 Conservative MPs have signed Early Day Motion 613 - threatening to rebel against the Alternative Vote referendum. If 26 of those rebellious Tories later swap lobbies and vote with the Opposition, the government could wobble.

    Graham
As you are well aware, the vote yesterday was on the two key principles of the Bill - the hold a referendum on AV and the reduce the number of MPs. It was not on the detail - including the thresholds, quotas or national boundaries (including Cornwall). Cornwall's MPs there fore backed the Bill because they support the two key principles - not because they support the details. They don't support Devonwall as they have all made clear on many occasions. It is during the Committee stages that the chance to protect Cornwall will come and, because the votes will be on the floor of the House, every MP will be able to have their say - and be held to account by you and your colleagues.
So please give the Cornish MPs the benefit of the doubt for the present moment and judge them by what they do (or do not do) when the real votes happen.

AVS is a disparate last stand from a party enjoying its brush with fame and will be 100% unelectable next election whatever system they use. The moon stands more chance of being made of Cornish yarg, than the liberal's chances of success. If for no other reason than AVS is highly unfair, neither democratic nor proportional, just a farce that will leave many utterly confused

  • Comment number 3.

Alex - I absolutely agree that actions speak louder than words, and that how Members of Parliament actually vote matters more than their speeches. Last night there was a vote - and the record speaks for itself.

  • Comment number 4.

Maybe, Mr Smith - but there was no specific mention in the Bill of the final number or sizes of the constituencies of The Celtic Nation And Duchy Of Cornwall. Nor is there yet any reliable single voter entry electoral roll population data for Cornwall & Scilly nor all UK constituencies and nor will there be for some considerable time and not until clear anomalies and multiple entries are sorted through additional Electoral Law legislation. Aren't those the facts of the matter.

Your speculations appear to be without foundation.

They haven't even started deduplicating the UK electoral roll yet in order to prevent multiple house owners being counted more than once!

That is surely a prerequisite to identifying proposed constituency populations and boundaries.

The whole Bill is an ill-considered shambles of two bills conflated into one with the apparently intended result of confusing unrelated matters in order to achieve objectives that demand separate consideration and debate. This Bill threatens further and bigger shambolic outcomes and profound dissatisfaction further down the line. This Bill should be sent back to the repository for discarded whimsically concocted back-of-a-wine-list bad ideas from whence it appears to have been ever so casually plucked like a lucky dip and with a passing flick of floppy public schoolboy cheveux.

    Don't you agree?

  • Comment number 5.

I would like to see a referendum of Scotish independence, but ask everyone in the UK, but like this wall up the Tamar it just not going to happen, we are all one if we like it or not

  • Comment number 6.

Yes Peter we are all one. We are all one human race that should work together in open cooperation, but does that mean that everything should be run from one central location?

Does the fact that we are one human family mean all of the UK's government should be centralised in London or that we should do away with the UK altogether and centralise all European government in Brussels? Perhaps we could just have one world government in Washington, Delhi, Brasilia or Beijing and get rid of all forms of national, regional and local government. We wouldn't need to bother with democracy at all would we?

So lets set aside your rather childish misrepresentations of the Cornish movements as wishing to 'wall up the Tamar' and lets talk, as adults, about the appropriate form of governance for the Cornwall and its inhabitants.

    Peter 'Tregantle' - 'revulsion' !?!

Your semantic slips are showing, Mr 'Tregantle'.

TIC was been tidied up recently. However, there appears to have been some leekage to poor Mr Smith's 'blog'...

  • Comment number 9.

Anyone have a clue what TIC is?

Is your realism starting to part AC I was referring to your recent outburst against the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ and Graham on this very blog, I really have not a clue what you think I was referring to.

Your behaviour grows wackier with every comment

  • Comment number 10.

    Hardly.

  • Comment number 11.

Isn't a TIC like a placid form of Tourettes, I suspect were these forums not so heavily moderated we would find out

I deduce AccurateChronometer is growing angrier that his bullying is being countered, perhaps the next time he will not link it from his own forum and attract more moderately minded people

  • Comment number 12.

You're drifting into the whimsy zone now, 'Andrew Jacks'. There is no AC bullying going on here. There is merely firm rebuttal of poorly thought through contributions by the 'Peter Tregantle','Andrew Jacks' and 'BackofanEnvelope' consortium.

  • Comment number 13.

""TheCornishDem I think you will find I meant we are all one in the UK""

So Peter are you saying that we, the people of the UK, are not one with our fellow human beings from Ireland, Europe or the rest of the World.

You support unionism for the UK so why not for Europe and wider world even?

  • Comment number 14.

TheCornishDem you can run but not hide from the truth, you do not live in Cornwall, that’s what we call a truth

  • Comment number 15.

Is this the truth then, 'Peter Tregantle'?
'Peter Tregantle' has decreed that persons not living in Cornwall & Scilly commenting or expressing opinions on the affairs of Cornwall & Scilly at the 'blog' of the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's 'political' (very) 'journalist' Graham Smith, rather grandly titled 'Graham Smith's Cornwall', do not meet the criteria for validation as determined by 'Peter Tregantle'.

  • Comment number 16.

Answer my question Peter please. Are you saying that we, the people of the UK, are not one with our fellow human beings from Ireland, Europe or the rest of the World? You support unionism for the UK so why not for Europe and wider world?

  • Comment number 17.

    So, no answer from Peter.

I can only assume that he does not consider UK citizens to be one with the rest of Europe and wider world.

Perhaps Peter is some form of British nationalist hostile to Europe who would like to build a wall around the UK.

Maybe Peter doesn't even feel one with other UK citizens of different racial or religious backgrounds to himself.

Do correct me if I'm wrong Peter.

Peter, you'll never succeed in sealing of the UK from the rest of the world, one reason being we share a land border with another EU member state (had to think about that one for a while didn't you?).

  • Comment number 18.

TheCornishDem, Mr Tregantle only posts during the week, usually in the mornings. So you are a bit previous in assuming he is not going to answer you, unless that is, you are on his "ignore list".

  • Comment number 19.

TheCornishDem my job is not to educate you, as a teacher you should know that. These are public forums not the Spanish inquisition. I will post what I feel like and will not feed your over sized ego

Yes Trembath whatever. If I was to create a list it would be people failing to make sagacious comments and you would be on it with the other followers of aslan, and other illusory beasts created by Payton?

There seems to be a need for all nationalists to find enemies. Peek over the devonwall you will see millions of them some with caravans driving past your bunkers every day

  • Comment number 20.

Mr Tregantle, I do not seek enemies, I do not follow Aslan, and I haven't the faintest idea what "illusory beasts created by Payton" there are that could be followed. In fact, one wonders why you have decided to pick on Peyton on this site.
I do, however, note that you only post to try to discredit anything that you see as "nationalistic", and use any excuse, however slim, to do so. It is as if you see it as your personal duty to pour scorn on all Cornish Nationalists, and anything they say. Did some nationalist upset you in the past?
You claim that it is nationalists who seek enemies, and yet you seem to visit a large number of different sites in the pursuit of your "personal duty", where you hardly go out of your way to make friends. Perhaps a change of approach would be in order?

  • Comment number 21.

You have just confirmed my point Trembath

  • Comment number 22.

More accurately, you have just proven mine.

  • Comment number 23.

TheCornishDem So Peter are you saying that we, the people of the UK, are not one with our fellow human beings from Ireland, Europe or the rest of the World.

Is that not like asking why are we here, you are clearly coming from a predefined direction but ignoring the systems already in place and inventing new meaning to my original comment. My comment was simply reversing the West Lothian question rather than asking if god exists. I would try tweeting Stephen Hawkins to find the meaning you are after the world is politically divided for all kinds of historical reasons I am not given to theoretical consideration what could have been rather basing my theories on where we are now and what we can achieve realistically

Oh and btw the vast majority in UK do not consider ourselves Europeans but humans is a no brainer as for Ireland many see a lesson rather than anything to admire

  • Comment number 24.

Peter stop wriggling. Are we 'one' with our European neighbours in the same way you see us as being 'one' in the UK? Are you 'one' with other UK citizens of different racial and religious backgrounds?

You are simply making a fool of yourself by not answering directly.

  • Comment number 25.

TheCornishDem if that was the case why do we not have a referendum on Europe?

  • Comment number 26.

    Peter Tregantle wrote:-
"....if that was the case why do we not have a referendum on Europe?"

We did,the problem for the likes of you is that the vote went in favour of staying in.
Why, because no-one listened to those who were saying that staying in would lead to the very state of affairs that you now complain about, that or they just did not care.
Just to remind you, the British Empire is no more.
