Flying the flag?

Graham Smith | 10:23 UK time, Friday, 11 June 2010

World Cup kick off just a few hours away.

David Cameron's announcement that he will be flying the flag of St George over 10 Downing Street to show his support for England prompted me to call Cornwall Council, where the flags of St Piran, the Union Jack and the European Union have for many years wafted gently in the breeze.

"Are there any plans to fly the flag of St George at County Hall?"

"Er, don't know. We'll get back to you."

I'll keep asking for as long as England remain in the competition.

Many Cornish people will not want to see the English flag flying outside County Hall. It's probably why it's not there now.

Why should it flown there? If Scotland had qualified, would we be flying their flag? Or the Welsh flag had they qualified (and bear in mind that the Cornish have a far greater affinity with the Welsh than the English). Do you base this on England's legally dubious claim to Cornwall (I'll refer you to the report by the Royal Commission on the Constitution 1973, as I doubt you'll take it it from me - that also recommends that Cornwall be referred to as a Duchy and not a county, by the way. Time that was put into effect by the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ). The English flag is not liked in Cornwall, for horrific historical reasons. We don't call it "The Butcher's Apron" for no reason.
