Former Lib Dem council leader says "vote MK"

Graham Smith | 09:55 UK time, Wednesday, 31 March 2010

Tim Jones, former Liberal Democrat leader of Restormel Borough Council, has written to local newspapers urging voters to support Mebyon Kernow's Dick Cole in the St Austell & Newquay constituency at the forthcoming general election. There can be no escaping the fact that this is a blow to the Lib Dem candidate, Stephen Gilbert - and excellent news for the Conservatives' Caroline Righton.

    More shoddy and biased journalism.

"excellent news for the Conservatives' Caroline Righton" because of course the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ wants everybody to think that MK can't possibly win the seat.

Prove the British -nationalist- Broadcasting Corporation wrong and vote for the only Cornish party.

I don't really understand the point in which you are trying to make:
"There can be no escaping the fact that this is a blow to the Lib Dem candidate, Stephen Gilbert - and excellent news for the Conservatives' Caroline Righton."

I don't understand why this is not just a victory for the hardwork and dedication of Dick Cole. If you read Dr Tim Jones letter:

It is a very insightful look into the qualities that make a good politician, particularly commitment to an area not as an end to the means of getting elected but for the area itself. I would have prefered for you Graham to instead have blogged about the points that Jones has brought up rather than your usual half concoted ideas on Cornish politics.

You do not include the reason Tim Jones gave - I've blogged about this here

I think you seem to have either missed the point or side stepped it here. Tim Jones arguement was that Dick Cole is committed to the place in which he lives he has not come here to simply win an election and if he loses he will carry on championing St Austell and Newquay. Unlike many candidates standing here in Cornwall to get elected and/or to further their political careers, when they lose they will continue to give nothing to the communities they wish to represent. One of the greatest problems imo with London based parties in Cornwall is that you have no grass roots support because you have no commitment to local issues, you simply see Cornwall as a place to get another seat. Or to put it another way a means to the end of Westminster. The difference with Dick Cole is that he sees his constiteuncy as an end in itself. Perhaps if the Labour government stopped seeing Cornwall in terms of statistics and seats and started treating us like a community you would have councillors at Truro and PPCS who actually live in the Duchy.

I'm Labour's prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth - and we have three Truro councillors.

'I'm Labour's prospective MP for Truro and Falmouth - and we have three Truro councillors.'

But not even ONE 'unitary authority' Cornwall Council Councillor.
