And The Track Of The Year Is.....

Imran Khan's 'Amplifier'!

Ìý

I know making a call for track of the year when we still have three months left is slightly bonkers, but after the last two weeks I'm confident that I'll be proved right.

The reasons I think Imran Khan's 'Amplifier' are multitude but let me give you a small cross section of them.

1. Everyone I know who takes their Desi music seriously (even the Electronic Headz!) love's the tune.

2. Its original in a way that hasn't happened in the desi scene for a few years. By that I mean its lyrics, its production and the marrying of the two are definitely a new flex for the more 'mainstream' side of our genre.

3. Every demographic likes the tune - Young 'uns think its a banger, peeps in their twenties love it, people over thirty and into their middle age's appreciate its addictive quality & some hardcore desi-headz who only listen to traditional Bhangra have admitted to me that its really well written.

4. It was the ONLY track to be seen and heard play out of souped-up car systems this summer, this Eid, and will no doubt take over Diwali as well.

5. It's a smash hit but is not a bhangra tune, nor a club tune, not an R&B or Hip Hop tune or even a south AsianÌýmainstream tune - its Unique...x

A special mention must go to Swami's 'Sugarless' & Jay Dabhi's 'Cry For Freedom' who came a close second and third in my thinking process for tune of the year...even though its September!

So these are my reasons behind 'my' tune of the year...what's yours?

I take my desi music seriously and I can't stand Amplifier. It's far too repetitive and basic. It's juvenile, if Soulja Boy was desi he'd probably make a song like it.

I think the factor you have missed (and it's the most important one) is appreciation for music outside of the closed desi community and with that in mind, the track of the year has got to be Sugarless. I think more people like the song across different demographics as well.

I must also admit Imran Khans Amplifier is a Hot track and must be the Track of the year.

The reasons your wrote are so true.

This tune is indeed unique and something special.
You could also say from that from his first single...

Looking forward for his future songs...

eeek I still have mixed feelings towards this track. It deserves its popularity because the beat and hook are catchy, it's very light hearted and even those people who may not necessarily like bhangra/music in punjabi can catch on to the lyrics. Its popularity since it was released, definitely should be commended.

HOWWWWever lol the lyrics are pap. Basically! I don't know who would say the lyrics are innovative and fresh (and mean that in a good way!) when he talks about driving his car at 220mph and dodging the police. As for his line about it being 40 degrees out and having to "turn on the AC" - I personally don't see the genius thinking involved in writing that! Imran Khan will go far on the back of his desire to see his music be constantly infused with Rnb/pop/euro pop or euro trance and dance music influences - it will keep his tunes catchy and fresh. However his song writing needs to be dropped - as the track 40 Prah proves - he has no talent in that department!!

Pop songs are full of promise again, underpinned by little more than a few chords and a nice melody. Friendly Fires UK Phenoms go one step further with "Paris": his "I promise" gets a boost from the very contemporary hustler mantra that immediately follows: "I'm on it." And this remix that does something better with the participation of a real plane - certainly one way to get to Paris - and, well, almost eliminating the Friendly Fires boys of the equation all together by giving up parts of the chorus verse original track Au Revoir Simone (hey, that's French!). Even if all else fails to convince you that Friendly Fires you will one day live in Paris and the command of the stars to shine on their behalf, at least you have a sweet ride, struck eight minutes with an accent of the offer. -
