Cho Oyu base camp
- 17 Sep 06, 06:55 AM
Hello from Advanced Base Camp. We are currently sleeping at about 5600m. I am quite breathless when I move around, but this may be due to a cold I seem to be developing. We have been asked more questions, particularly in response to Chris' pee bottle incident. I shall allow him to respond to them. We have ben asked again about why we are not doing the research in decompresion chambers. I shall refer the individual to my previous response to this question, adding only that the chamber results do not appear to reflect results from experiments carried out at altitude.
We have also been asked why we are attempting Cho Oyu in the Autumn, and Everest in the Spring. I am not sure what the questioner is getting at. Everest is rarely attempted in the Autumn because the success rate on Everest is considered much higher if attempted in Spring. The same is probably true of Cho Oyu in the Autumn. I hope this answers the question.
The scenery at Cho Oyu base camp is awesome. The weather is very warm during the day. Anything up to 16 degrees centigrade. As soon as the sun goes down it gets very cold into minus figures. Everyone gets out down jackets, gloves, hats and salopettes. It has snowed on several occasions overnight, but the sun burns it off over the course of the day. Our Sherpa and cook team are looking afer us very well. We are eating superbly, which is helping to keep us in shape for the task ahead. We had a puja ceremony this morning, performed by a local lama to bless the expedition. It was very solemn, and made me feel happier about the impending climb. Thank you once again for all the messages of support. They are extremely welcome. The team is in good spirits, but support from home is always welcome.

Dear Kay and the team,
Congratulations on your determination and ambition climbing Cho Oyu!
Your blog is the first thing i check when i switch on my computer-then again, six hour ward rounds might have something to do with wanting to be at 6000m!
Was wandering, how are you carrying all the equipment as you ascend?
I wish you a safe summit and that the flu like symptoms dissipate soon!
Say hi to Chris VT for me.
