From Canada with love

Well, a warm welcome back to Sara! I had begun to worry just a little, over the apparent lack of work seemingly going on in the garden, but it sounds like we are back on track and I'm delighted听the Radio 1 audience is getting to hear about Sara's exploits.

As for myself, I am afraid听I have little or no idea how my veg are doing.听I am away for a few weeks now on a shoot in Canada, so am only getting sporadic updates from Susie.听 It sounds like you've all had some pretty harsh weather (it has been glorious out here in Canada. Sorry, but it's true.) and听Susie is ever-so-slightly worried.听If Sara's experience is anything to go by, everything should be听fine.听Susie is also convinced that our house is now being overun by creepy crawlies because of the veg, and听I am yet to convince her that this can only be a good thing...!

We have been filming a geology series about man and the planet, and have been looking at some things which, for me, really sum up some of the the troubles we face today - a massive oil operation in northern Alberta and the shrinking glaciers of the rocky mountains (see pic). Dont worry, I don't intend听a massive climate change rant here,听but the contrast between the two was striking. It made me think that the scale of what we face is really quite scary - but there has got to be hope. For me this hope is in the little things, like a small army of people who, maybe for the first time ever, are听feeding their own tomato plants and harvesting their first carrots.听 So a big pat on the back to everyone!

Karen Kenny is the Eastern Region Rep for the National Society of Allotment & Leisure Gardeners as well as on the management team of Suffolk and Ipswich allotments where she runs a site. Karen is also an accomplished lecturer on most gardening subjects, including allotments.

Peter Horrocks has an allotment in Newcastle. He's the regional rep for the in the North of England & Scotland, the secretary of the Newcastle Allotments Working Group. Plus, Peter is secretary of a ten-acre allotments site in Newcastle, considered by many to be one of the best in the city.

Ben Raskin is an advisor with the , as well as helping to run 22 acres of organic vegetables. With over 16 years of horticultural experience, including running market gardens and working at the Welsh College of Horticulture, he's an expert on organic matters.

Beechgrove Potting Shed is Radio Scotland's top gardening show, giving tips and advice to Scottish gardeners - and the odd Dig In grower - every Sunday.

Zoe tends the Dig In website. When she's not in the office you'll find her gardening on Hampstead Heath and in Regents Park.
