The strange world of junior and international football
Well, my first memorable experience of (I used to go and watch my Dad many moons ago playing for ) didn't exactly whet my appetite.
I'll give the players the benefit of the doubt that we caught both and on an off day, but the game was a bit of a disappointment.
In fact, the game was the only disappointment of an absolutely brilliant day and night that took us from Dumfries to Glasgow to Beith and then back to Glasgow.
Whereas the game didn't exactly live up to expectations, the home crowd kept us amused and the Smugglers' Tavern certainly did.
We arrived in Beith before midday and headed to the ground.
We heard a Cumnock player get verbally abused by one fan for 40 minutes of the second half of the match; he was only spared the other five minutes because he was sent off.
We saw a boy get knocked out after he was punched by what looked like a fellow fan and we also heard some brilliant football chants made even better by the females in the crowd.
So what I want to know is, is this what junior football is like every week?
I'm sure I speak for my three mates who were in attendance with me when I say that we could happily put up with a poor match on the park if we were going to be entertained by the Beith fans every week.
I was hoping and expecting to sit and enjoy watching a for the first time in a long time against Liechtenstein last night.
You know what I mean, an early goal to calm the nerves instead of huffing and puffing and scraping a victory late on in the game.
We all know what happened and maybe this is how it's always going to be for us.
I was disappointed in a sense with the match and certainly the result in Lithuania.
I thought the team looked fairly solid throughout the match. But, as happens too often, we were poor on the creative side.
I was sat there thinking that we should just have gone for it and had a right go.
Fast forward to Tuesday night and, although we might all not have got the personnel we wanted, the formation and set up was just about right.
We sneaked the result deep into stoppage time, but the performance was as poor as I've witnessed.
Craig Levein took a lot of stick after the draw in Lithuania and, because of this, I think he forced himself into including Kris Boyd alongside Kenny Miller and bringing in James McFadden.
It didn't work, but let's not forget we did manage to get a very crucial victory as it turned out after Lithuania's win in the Czech Republic.
I had a small disagreement with my pal Moff on Facebook last night as the big man was annoyed at the reaction of the players and manager at the end of the match.
He felt there was too much celebration going on after such a lacklustre performance.
He was probably right to a certain extent, but I think that came more with relief than anything else.
We've all celebrated a win we scarcely deserved, but I would like to think that there was no way it was all cuddles and dancing when the manager got the players away from the cameras and into the dressing-room.
There can be no kidding ourselves on that we were very close to one of the worst results and performances in our history last night.
What I will say, though, is that I would happily sit through another six performances like that if it meant we were finally able to watch our country at a major tournament again at .

(Thankfully none of the TV stations I can watch had Scotland on last night - I watched Germany show how to wallop a minnow Azerbaijan, 6-1).

Getting 3 points for Scotland was a HUGE result, regardless of who they were playing. And all of a sudden an away point in Lithuania looks like a very good point. Dont forget Lithuania have taken some big scalps over the last 2 years.
Still, the best the Scots can hope for is 2nd and then its a lottery. I doubt they would qualify against most runners up, but you never know.
Whats more promising is the form of the u21s, who have reached the play offs, which is no mean feat.

And, on another topic, those Numpties who booed during their opponents Nationa Anthem, and the have the gall to try an justify it on 606,certainly don't deserve to be watching any team play anywhere.
If, undeservedly, Scotland manage to scrape through from a weak qualifying group, they will get slaughtered at the Finals.

What a chirade!

Spain are in Scotland's group which hardly makes it "weak." If England had been placed in a group with the World and European Champions then I think they would be wetting themselves. Having Montenegro as your main rivals is not quite the same.

Perfomances are always lacking at this time of year before players have had a chance to build up match sharpness. Let's see what the next 2 performances are like before we start the post-mortem.

Watched Junior football since a boy and quite honestly the senior game just lacks some of the all-round drama and 'romance' of the juniors..huddled at the back of sheds with a hot bovril trying to stay out of gales and rain in winter, watching full-scale fights between dug-outs and players, refs being escorted by the cops off pitches at the end of games, all wildlife is there..
Any thoughts on the difference in standards between the top junior sides and those at the bottom end of the Scottish leagues?

You then go on to quote countries such as Northern Ireland, Norway & Sweden who have all beaten other countries as some time or other.
You simply cannot begin to compare Liechtenstein with the above countries. Liechtenstein has a population of under 40,000. Under 40,000 - do you realise how small that makes them? Even Northern Ireland has around 1.75 million - over 40 times more people. Get real, that performance was completely and utterly dire - if you are now celebrating a 2-1 win over one of the smallest minnows in world football, then you may as well give up. Dreadful.

I was just pointing out that even though you scraped a victory in the 97th minute, it was against such a small nation (and at Hampden as well), that it should not be a cause for celebration. Relief, certainly. Scotland simply must ensure that a performance like this doesn't happen again, if you are not to be the target of further ridicule. The really worrying thing, I would guess, is that just when you think the stock of Scottish football can't fall any lower, somehow it always manages to plumb a new, unexpected depth. Personally, I'd like to see the Scots back up there. It may be too much to expect automatic qualification, but surely challenging for play-off positions (and giving countries like Liechtenstein a sound beating) is not too much to ask?

In terms of reputation we were on a knife edge and Spain will comfortably top the group but you are right that you want to challenge for the play-off spot..and thats why this game was a relief because we are still in it. The quals always throw up some quirky results (France were beaten at home, Portugal drew with Cyprus) and there are games where you are in line for the shock - relieved to avid that!

Rob04 - when you look at recent results in the Scottish Cup then I don't think there is too much difference between the sides. I will say that it is a lot different to go from one-off matches to coming up against these sides every week.
